The council started off by unanirn- ously electing Sally Kornwise the first girl president of the council. Under her leadership and assisted by vice-president Roger Pemick: secretary, Tobye Davidson: and treasurer, Gere Primack, the council carried out a very successful semester. Besides having social aiiairs such as the Dogpatch Dance , which was a stag blue-jean affair in honor of Sadie Hawkins Day, and Showtime , a gala variety show and dance from which all pro- ceeds went to a memorial lund for the late Mr. Silverstein, lorrner music instructor here at Central, the council sent over thirty large baskets of giits worth over five hundred dollars to the Dearbom Vet- erans Hospital during Christmas vacation. Ten to Better School The council participated in two student exchanges with other schools and also sponsored a cultural evening. The council arranged car pools to football and basket ball games. These activities and a series of Blue-and-White Fridays brought a new burst of spirit from the entire student body. Yes, we were having a successful term. The council continued its good work in the spring term with President Roger Pernick in the drivers seat assisted by veep Beverly Ribiat. Once again ably holding the pen and the purse strings were Tobye Davidson and Gere Primack. respectively. During the spring term the council sponsored a very successful pep rally and helped put on an alumni variety show and dance. They participated in a clothing drive and sold bookcovers and school phamplets to students. The council of next term will certainly have to try hard to live up to or to surpass this year's accomplishments. STUDENT COUNCIL-Row l: S. Superstien: M. Gerber: R. Weingarten: B. Lehrman: L. The library staff consists of twelve girls, who, under the direction of Miss Orah Hahn. our head librarian. try to help us use the tools of the library correctly. Students wishing to join the staff should be interested in the work and should be able to de- vote one hour a day to it: also a high academic rating is necessary. As a reward for their ser- vices members receive two and a half hours credit. While on the staff students type, slip books. and use the card catalog. If they later wish to obtain cr job in a public library it is possible to get a recommendation from Central's library, pro- vided they have done the job of a good librarian. P. A. Seventeen Unity Forum Strives for Brotherhood What can we do to help create good will in our school and our community as a whole? This is the type of question that confronts the Unity Forum at its meetings. It is primarily a dis- cussion group and has the largest membership of the clubs in the school. The group has no auth- ority to take action itself, but it hopes that the members will act individually to create unity. ln the fall term the group was headed by capable president, Murray Ianower, and ably assisted by his fellow officers, vice-president, Sally Komwise: secretary, Iudy Sperka: and treasurer, Betsy Brown. Discussions were held with pupils from other schools on school spirit. Many ideas were exchanged and the meetings were a big success. In the spring term the forum showed films on brotherhood week in America and also held a discussion on racial prejudice. Officers for the spring term were president, Betsy Brown: secre- tary, Beverly Ginsberg: and treasurer, Elsie Kuf- fler. Under their guidance the forum has had a successful year. Mr. Milan who had done an excellent job for many years as sponsor of this club, abolished it because he felt that the interest ot the students was lacking. However, this Ianuary their interest ilared up again and a new club was started with the help ot Mr. Henshaw as sponsor. The contemporary allairs club is distinguished from the other club at Central by its lack of officers. The club practices a true democratic organization where friendly informal meetings are held at which the members voice their opinions about topics of current interest. L R 2: T. Davidson: B. The Sportsmanship Council celebrated its third birthday this term. For three years this club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Homer Martin, has promoted their code, which is: We consider all athletes as our guests. We will accept all decisions of the officials. We do not utter abusive or irritating remarks or attempt to rattle an opposing player. We ap- plaud opponents who make good plays or show good sportsmanship. We strive to win fairly without boasting and lose without ex- cuses. We ask that all players and fans help us live up to this code . . . and MAY THE BEST MAN This year the council handed out programs at football and basketball games, publicized school affairs. and held student exchanges with other schools to find out about their activities. For all of these reasons, this is one of Central's fastest growing clubs. Promoting good sportsmanship, providing social opportunities for girl athletes. being a useful service organization of the school, and encouraging girl's athletics in Central are a few of the purposes behind the G. A. A. The functions of the G. A. A. are numerous -selling tickets at school activities: ushering at commencement, sponsoring pep rallys. and conducting the sale of C pins and senior pins. The G. A. A. had an active season this year. Among their many activities was the holding of a Valentine's Day party for the members of the Central and Northwestern girls' basketball teams and sponsoring a banquet for the girl athletes. The Late Christopher Bean, revolved around the paintings oi an undiscovered artist, Chris Bean, who had been a handy man in the Haggett household, and was always painting. During his liifetime he had always been belittled for his work. Then, ten years after his death. it was realiized that he was an undiscovered genius. His paintings, which had previously been used to patch the chicken house and serve other odd iunctions, were worth thousands of dollars overnight. The Haggett household was overrun by three crooked art dealers who. through various ways and means, tried to swindle the Haggetts out of the paintings. Much to the distress of Dr. and Mrs. Haggett, no paintings could be iound. The climax was reached when Abbie, the maid, revealed that she had been secretly married to Chris and had in her possession many ot the paintings. The cast was headed by Arthur Vander, who did a marvelous job as Dr. Haggett, while Florence Roth and Rosara Wine alternated in the role oi his wife. Barbara Weindling played the part ot Susan, the younger daughter, and Heather Biederman and Gloria Wright shared the part ot the oldest daughter, Ada. Susan's boyiriend was portrayed by Harold Summers and Eugene Axlerod. The three art dealers were played by Phil Stienway. Erwin Guttenberg, and Larry Frohman. Alter that came a pair of losses, the first with Southwestern, 7-6, and then one with Western, the Metropolitan champions, by the score of 13-7. GOLF TEAM With only one reserve man lost lrorn his 1951 team, Coach Gordon Minton had four returning golf lettermen to start his 1952 goll season. The team was lead, as in 1951, by low-scoring Bill Siegel. The other low-scoring members of the team were Larry Lieberman, Gary Wex- ler, and Iack Horwitz. The team was vastly improved this year and played all their matches with a strong deter- mination to win. Golf, Track Lead Spring Sports AND-THEY'RE OFF-! Central's track team deserves a good pat on the back as they come pulling off the lield this year. They walked away winning every tournament thus lar. We felt we had the best all around track team in the city. A score like 95-13 easily proves it. Track is a tradition at Central, one that's been kept up proudly. GOLF TEAM-lst Row: Bill Siegel. Although the team, which is made up of al- most all tenth graders, has not won too many meets this year, it has wonderful potentialities for next season. Particularly outstanding are Minncr Weis- en, who has won every event she has entered, and Lenore Weiss, who has won all but one event in which she was entered. Faculty advisor, Mrs. Dierdori, hopes that the team will be more successful in coming seasons. Rowl L Freedman S Willis L Weiss E Brown Row 2 M Weisling: B. Rosenberg: S. Filer: I. Rosensweig: R. Swimmers Compile Great Record Central's swimming team emerged from the 1951 campaign as the finest team from Central in ten years. The persistence and hard work of many seasons finally paid off as the squad finished the season with the impressive record of three wins and four losses. Behind this fine display of winning power was a squad whose fighting spirit, team-work. and loyalty are unequaled in all of Central's history. Their fine co-operation led them to defeat Southwestem by the score of 65 to 26. upset Cooley by a score of 52 to 39. and leave Northwestern far behind with the score of 69 to 22. It can probably be said that Bob Marans was the team's outstanding individual performer, placing third in the indivi- dual medley and fifth in the breaststroke in this year's City Meet. Orchids can also be extended to Ed Chodoroff. Ierry Miller and Don Aaron. who made up the medley team that placed sixth in the city. Al Lapin came in for his share of glory by taking fifth place in the two-hundred yard freestyle. Stan Ossman also gained distinction in the city meets. A great deal of credit must be given to Coach Don Kelley and to captain Bob Marans, without whose able assistance it is doubtful that the tankmen could have achieved their outstand- ing season. F orty-one CAPTAIN GOLDSTEIN CAPTAIN MECK Cagers Reach Play-offs Again Co-Captained by Ralph Godstein and Mar- SEASON'S BASKETBALL SCORES tin Mech, Central's Basketball team rolled on to eight wins, no losses and one tie in the reg- ular season. All-City Goldstein was a consistent twenty point man and led Central to the West-Side Crown with only one tie, and that to Northwes- tern with a 41 to 41 game. Favorites in the playoffs, Central slipped after downing Pershing by losing to Northern in the second round. Terrific spirit was shown by the team and also by the student body of Central. which made a magnificent showing at all the games and cheered their team on to victory after vic- tory. The new song that was learned by Cen- tralites was sung again and again at all the games and gave invaluable spirit to the team. This season was truly one of the greatest that Central has ever had. The Blazer Nine Central opened the 1952 baseball season with a game with Northwestern. the defending West Side Champions, at Northwestern Field. One ot the big problems the team had to face was that of pitching. Coach Kammerer had only two experienced pitchers, Barry Pearl and Malcom Kaplan. Leonard Meritt had shown some promise ol becoming a starting pitcher. Don Wittenberg did most ol the catching chores for Central this year. This year's iniielcl was one of the strongest fielding inlields Central has had in many years. Noah Lambert was at first base, Tom Kovan at third base, and Marty Mech played short- stop. This season's team was!! one that Central will long be proud 'ot lor many years to com.e. Form szr J' ,,,,,,s..g' '- :mir Qs? ... he 3: fi-. Bob Brent, Vic Spear, Charles Solo- mon, Leonard Schrier, and Marv Mittle- dorf handled the doubles matches. All these boys were new-comers to the squad. Lee M.: Eliot Hall, College Prep Sixty-three I June Class Officers At last the fateful day had arrived For which the seniors had eagerly strived. Election of officers was the job at hand. Everyone wanted the best in the land. A president was wanted with just the right touch Of dependability. common sense, and such. A pal was chosen with charm. brains and wit. The votes were counted and Maurice Frankel was it. With paper and pencil at her command The secretary has everything well in hand. This young lady has talents galore. With Ruth Boraks who could want more. We hold the Veep in high esteem. She and Morrey make a perfect team. Her intelligence. poise. and big dark eyes Identify this lass as Sally Kornwise. The economic status of the class advances In the guidance of the boy who handles finances With Robert Littman the seniors have a prize As the treasury grows to enormous size. Boraks. Littman. Frankel. and Kornwise Have had their praises sung to the skies. But the old friends they have and the new friends won Know that words alone can't tell all they've done. Especially when she had her headset on- all six pounds six ounces of it. That 1880 headset, though, was a good piece of equipment-the hest of its day. But with its hox-like transmitter and leather harness, it couldn't, by any stretch of the imagination, he called comfortahle. Today, of course, itis a different story. The telephone operator now wears a streamlined headset that weighs only nine ounces-93 ounces less than the 1880 model. It fits her like a new spring bonnet and makes her joh as the uVoice with a Smile easier than ever before. And speaking of jobs, if youlre graduating this year, and are looking for an interesting, important joh, Michigan Bell may have one for you. Why not drop in soon for an interview?
