Qu! am! SC,-.JK Reading. 'riting. and all subjects pertinent to journalism and literature-these comprise the agenda of the Wfalt Wl1itman Society of Quill and Scroll. Twenty-two years ago this club tirst opened its roll to students of Central High interested in writing. Since then it has been continually active in encourag- ing more and more Centralites to set their thoughts and ideas on paper. It is upon this, the stimulation and rewarding of creative talent. that the whole basis for the club's existence is laid. How is this motive carried out? The society em- ploys various methods. It' a person were to drop in on one ot' the bi-monthly meetings. he would be sure to find a bee-hive of activity. The programs feature prominent guest speakers. sound movies, records. literary readings. and lively discussions on innumer- able topics. However, the Walt XXfhitman Society is far from being just a loc ll affair lt is chartered as a member ot the International uill and Scroll Society whose heldquarters is If Northwestern University This international organization consists of a membership ot eighty thousand high school journalists scattered all over the world. Membership in the Wlalt Vilhitman Society of Quill and Scroll is open to all B students. who are inter- ested in journalism. After registering a desire to join, the next step is to submit an original article to Mr. Birger Bakke, club sponsor. This article is then sent to the international Executive for approval. liol- lowing is an impressive initiation in whch the pledge becomes an active member. Proud new Wlalt Wlliit- manites can be seen sporting their shiny, gold mem- bership pins. This year saw a large membership in the honorary society. lfall term ollicers were: Allen Linden, presi- dentg Ruthe Stein, vice-president: Sue Miller. secre- tary-treasurerg and Susan Pernick, sergeant-at-arms.
