HISTORY OF CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL l859 I924 The hlstory of Pentral Hrgh School dates back to those years before the ClVll War when the UHIOD Schools were the only public schools ln the cxty These school although more advanced m therr courses than the pres ent Grammar schools by no means prepared one for college As early as l844 sponsors of educatlon rn the crty began to reallze the need of a more advanced publrc school but every attempt to meet thls need proved a failure Fmally on August 30 1859 twenty three boys wlth Mr Henry Chaney actmg as combmed prlnclpal and faculty met ln an upper room of a two story frame bulldmv located on the present srte of the Board of Educatlon and lard the foundation of the Detrolt Hlgh School Although of humble beglnnmg the school progressed steadlly Toward the end of the frrst year a one story brlck addltlon was constructed ln the rear of the buxldmg The following year the doors were thrown open to glrls the total enrollment amounted to one hundred and four and lVl1ss Pollay was added to the faculty ln une of the same year the school graduated lts first class The organlzatlon had grown so large by IS63 that rt was deemed ex pedlent to remove lt to the old Capltol bulldmg This bulldlng sltuated ln the trlangle formed by Grxswold State and Rowland streets was then sur rounded by resldences For forty years the school contlnued rn thls locallty cons antly lncreaslng rn prosperity and slze It had grown so large by l893 that plans were made for a new Hugh School These plans were hastened by the burnlng of the Caprtol bullclmv on anuary 27 Dunno the three years between the burn mg of the old building and the erection of the new the Blddle House spread nts klndly rf somewhat leaky roof over the students On November I3 l894 with the hlstorlc spade which has slnce that txme played such an important part m the tradltlon of the school the first sod was turned on the srte of the new bulldlng On May I3 l895 the cornerstone was lard by Jared W Fxnny Central s oldest llVlng graduate and Ill x., . .. 5, ' , . y . . 1 . , . s v - ' v - , - Q 1 1 -5, - y - - x v n ' s y v v ' . . . . + . . , c 3' .I ' :a ' . . . . . .- D v . . . -- , . v v v . . e -1 1 ' a n . . - . . . , ..
