WM Fhuorvsn No doubt you have often heard someone speak of the former members of Central At least durmg talks ln the house when graduate members have been referred to they have been spoken of as former members Per chance you may have wondered at the time just what was meant by a former member ln my estlmatlon one who rs graduated from Central and breaks all tres bmdlng hlm to her forgets her ldeals does not llve up to her lofty standards severs frlendshlps made there and acts generally as lf he had never known or cared that a Central High School existed that my frlends IS a former member Central has very few If any such members Do I hear someone say that he thought a student who had been graduated from Central was a former member3 Ah perhaps that IS what many of you thlnk Thls mterchangmg of the two terms former member and graduate member ns a common mlstake among us which seems so sllght a one that It passes unnotlced However It should be corrected as no one who has ever been graduated from Central rs really a former member That IS he may be After you had been Graduated would It be musxc to your ears to hear yourself spoken of as a former mernber3 Or would you resent It and feel as though you were bemg offered an 1nsult3 Would you like to know or feel that after you were gone your old frlends and class mates when mentlonmg your name added that explanatory phrase a former member? J' J' ' ' - ' 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 - 1 1 , . 1 1 - 1 - 1 1 , . 1 . . . 1 . . , ' 1 1 J . , . 11 . 11 . . 1 11 11 1 - 1 .. , . , . . 1 . . , . , . . . . . 1 I FORUM DEBATING SOCIETY Years Hy by and wlth them vanrsh all the rmperfectlons that mark the accomplishments of a new organlzatlon The Forum Debatnng Society by now no longer a baby orgamzatlon finds ntself ID the ranks of the most worthy organlzatlons of Central Bemg prlmarlly a debatmg club the organlzatron devoted a majority of lts tlme to the perfectlon of that art And many excellent debates marked the meetmgs of the orgamzatlon throughout the year Nevertheless debating dld not occupy all the attentlon of the club for many beneflclal programs of llghter vem were presented among these numbering book reviews parlramentary drllls current toplc dlscusslons and declamatlon contests The success of an organlzatlon depends largely on nts officers upon whose shoulders rest the responslblllty of leading the members on to the de sured goal Those who demonstrated thelr full worth as leaders for the fall term were Rose Sosnowsky President Lllllah Kanter Vlce President Sylvla Stone Secretary and Constance Sldder Treasurer The ofhcers for the sprung term were Lllllan Kanter Presldent Sylvla Stone Vice President lda Weitzman Secretary Rose Schecter Treasurer and Llllnan Ajamy Sergeant at Arms A number of changes were made ln regard to the Forum faculty ad vxsors Miss Hull and Miss Levens who had retired after falthful servrce to school and organlzatlon left at the begrnnlng of the fall term and their places were filled by Mlss Torr and Miss T ames Mr Sprague filled the vacancy made by the passing of MISS Hadley Mlss Arms remalned much to the Joy of the girls Because of unavoidable circumstances Mlss Torr Mlss T ames and Mr Sprague who had so well anded IH the work of the organlzatlon for a term found that It was necessary to resxgn thelr posltlons as advlsors at the begmmng of the sprung semester The vacant places were agam filled and the faculty members for thx last term were Mlss Arms Miss acobson and Mr Rosecrance The mterest manxfested by these advisors was felt almost lmmedlately and much of the term s success IS due to therr untlrmg efforts to mamtam the hlgh standard of achlevement set by the club An event of prlmary lmportance was a declamatlon contest held durrng the fall term The Judges found It dlfhcult to declde vwnlch two girls de served the prlzes offered smce all were so well prepared However the Judges awarded first prxze to Rose Schecter and second prize to l..1ll1an Kan ter lda Xvertzman and Margaret Schlafer recelved honorable mentlon The sprlng term was almost entlrely devoted to debating ln prepara tlon for an outsxde debate to be held some time next term The debatels and audnence prohted allke for the toprcs were of local and natlonal lm portance On March 20 Forum honored the memory of Miss May Hadley who was a faculty advisor of Forum up to the txme of her death by presenting a set of Shakespeare s works to the school Mass Hadley death was felt keenly by all the members of the club and they tlll feel that the set of books inadequately expresses their appreciation of the great work which Mlss Had ley rendered them through her years as an advlsor I v . ' 1 d Q ' : hz ' h llg 1-d greatly to further th 1 L ,, ss THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES l893 l924 The House of Representatives has found its sixty first and sixty second terms two of the most successful in its history Years come and go old members graduate new fellows take their places but the spirit and prestige of House the oldest high school debating club west of the Alleghenles remains the same The biggest event of the past year was the celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of the organization The date fell during the Christmas holidays and the celebration lasted over two evenings The first of these was given over to the annual model meeting This meeting at which House show the public the nature of its work was car rled off in a most successful manner The debate on the World Court was well prepared and delivered Rep Charles Coe won the Fox Medal for the best speech of the evening The second evening saw a very successful alumni re union in the school lunch room Honoraries of all ages were present Men now leaders in their profession college students and members of active groups mingled as House men The enjoyment of the evening was due largely to the work of Toastmaster Lee A White But the work has not been limited to anniversaries Every Wednesday national bills of current interest have been intelligently discussed on the floor of House The battles between the Republican and Democratic factions have been bitter and close The speeches have been well thought out and by efficient business sessions and snappy parliamentary drills Another enjoyable feature of the year s program has been the monthly House parties at which the fellows meet for a social evening at the home of some member Everyone has enjoyed these gatherings At the time of writing negotiations for an out ide debate to be held before the Centralite appears are in progress Many valuable members will be lost through graduation Realizing this the membership committee has looked to the future and has admitted many promising new members to the roll The House is fortunate in having as faculty advisers MISSSS Schwartz and Bamfield and Messrs Full and Camneett These teachers have given invaluable and by their willingness to help and their friendly criticism The fellows wish to thank them Much of the credit for the successful year is due the officers They were for the fall term Speaker Robert Patterson Clerk Franklin Seeley Assistant Clerk Richard Atkms Sergeant at Arms ohn Batty for the spring term Speaker Milton M Murray Clerk Stratton Buck Assistant Clerk Richard Atkms and Sergeant at Arms ames Ru sell UI J ' . g : . N ., u, El jf '14 if X ' I f J 'B Q I ,s .K-gxxximmi Ji kiwi? -QT ,Fda -YT , , X. - , . , sei' fm ., 1 DMM X ff The football season just closed was ln many res pects the most successful ln years from the viewpoint of the City High School League There were more good teams than ever before competing for city honors These heretofore weaker teams proved to be on a par with the best of former years and league competition was keener than in any previous season Central has reason to be proud of her team which but one defeat and at the top of the percentage column The material was of good quality but lacking in numbers and because of this scarcity of reserves t seemed at first very unlikely that Central could pass through her hard schedule successfully Five regulars of 1922 and three substitutes were on hand as a nucleus for the I9Z3 team These sup plemented by last year s reserves and house team players made up the squad of seventeen which played through the season The team had weight in the line speed ln the back field and plenty of individual ability but its greatest asset was its fighting spirit and loyalty which resulted in the harmony and team play so essential to success They entered each game imbued with the idea that Central was on trial and should not be found wanting Flghtlng spirit the result of school loyalty gave Cen tral the championship The l923 season of the City League teams was opened by Central vs Mt Clemens on Cocld Field September 22 and closed by Central on De cember l at Huntington W Va The first four games of the schedule with Mt Clemens Northeastern Cass Tech and Pontiac were won wlth the use of but few formations and plays An attempt to annex the fifth game with the same assets proved a heartbreaklng failure and produced the one blot on our season s record This defeat although hard to accept had its compensatlons It seemed to give the team the necessary determination and punch to pass through the remainder of the season undefeated The tie game with Northern the next week Indicated at least a partial recovery from this disaster The open date of November 3 gave a breathing spell and time to organize the attack and ln the game with Northwestern on November I0 a vast improvement was shown ln each of the remaining games with Bay Qxty Central Eastern and Huntmgton this improvement continued steadily and the last game against the West Virginia champions was a fitting cllmax to a successful season Too much credit cannot be glven to Captain Grinnell and his team mates It was their fight determination and loyalty that put Central again at the tgp A H W 1 V Ev J tr i r. 9 Sis- D 1 I , T V , 'f 'V' 4 played a strenuous schedule and came through with Q ' - ' , i 111 mxxxgxmw www M , 2 Z' if 4 Z if KZ ...BALJ-Cf 1 n, Althcugh Qentral s basketball team falled to wln the Clty Champxonshlp for the season of 1923 24 the squad and coach deserve great prarse for the work they have done for Central lf team work and harmony and not stature and expernence counted Central would have come out on top thxs season but handlcapped greatly by an un experlenced and comparatlvely small team we were unable to wln the champlonshrp although we dld make a remarkable showmg wlnnlng seven out of nlne schedule games and being the only team to beat North western crty champs The creditable showmg made by the team thls year can only be credited to the untrrlng efforts of Coach Noel Cralg who S3Cl'lHCCd much of his valuable tlme and thought to hrs team Next year the team wlll mlss such wonderful men as Armstrong Olds Guanlerrx Gealer Coe Vlctorson and Blelfleld but the season next year seems to be even more promlslng than the one just finlshed wlth the fol Frankensteen and a large squad of reserves coached by Mr Rogers thls year HOUSE ATHLETICS House athletlcs closed one of the most successful seasons wltnessed xn the mter house competlton The contests were very close and as a result aroused much mterest The football season was followed with as much enthusiasm as the varslty football team House l66 staged a remarkable showlnv by overcommv many obstacles and wlnnlng the mter house champlonshlp The race was exceedmgly close wlth l65 and l75 trallxnv all the way Coaches Wood and Rogers feel sure that they have drscovered many cornmg stars Basketball soon occupled the llmellght In the house athletlc aCtlVltlCS Athletlc Director Vauvhan S Blanchard to whom too much credlt cannot be given for hrs incessant Interest ln house athletxcs arranged a basketball schedule which allowed the freshmen of the vanous houses to be represented on the court as were the sophomores The unllmxted class aroused much rnterest and the majorlty of the contests were decided by a few pomts The competltlon was so close that a deadlock rssued between Houses l6J and 166 A play off was lmposslble but the cup remalned ln the possession of the Liberty Lincoln uxntet who hid won the championship the year before UTI lllw I .
