We can be no stronger than you make us. Thus, you must be the best you can be at whatever you choose to pursue. Remember, if you want to be a part of some' thing great, you must do something great. Melvin L. Franklin Assistant Principals 2 1' 2 ...P It is the committment of the staff at Central High School to provide the young men and women of our community with an educational experience that will prepare them for life in a chang- ing, competitive world. Centralites should be challenged to extend their learning beyond the basic fundamentals. Individually and collectively, opportuni- ties are provided for the discovery and the achievement of human potentiality. As we strive for those conditions at Central and as we participate in the greater community, students should know more about who they areg where they are going and how to arrive at their destinations in a caring and disciplined manner. Success and self-fulfillment will be realized by those who develop through maturation and the integration of acquired knowledge and skill while participating in their educational future at Central High School. B. Dennis A Message of Love Love God above all other, as He is the maker of all things, Love your neighbor as yourself, and you will never offend him. Love life with all its splendor, and it will bring you many pleasures Love yourself, and success will be yours. But always search for righteousness, it will bring you everlasting peace. Love, Mrs. Camilla Vick. Congratulations to all of you, the members of the graduating class of Central Senior High School, 1982. We will always welcome your constructive in volvement in school activities that will help make Central the most academically-based school in Kansas City Jack P. Cummins, Ph.D. Assistant Principal 60101 lar The Class of '82 has survived the many changes that have taken place over the past four yearsg changes in school organization, in curriculum, school bound- aries, bussing, teachers and philosophy. To the dis- tinction of being the smallest graduating class in sixty years must be added the the most resilent. This experience with change may be a realistic prepara- tion for the confused world it will soon inherit, we hope Harold Mensch Dedicated To The Class of 82 Your high school days have ended now And forward you must go Into a world filled with many things that surely you don't know What will it be, this life of yours? What things will you pursue? Have you set your goals on lofty plains, too high for you to reach? Or did you shrug your shoulders and with the crowd repeat, I do not know! Don't really care! I'll think of that tomorrow! Today is now and now is fun, nothing will bring me sorrow Take care my friend, be careful as you choose Take plenty of time to think and plan, Your future is made up of you Be sure to set your destination On what will make you proud For as you live and what you do reflects on your up bringing So to you darling friends of mine I have but this to say, Live righteously Love graciously And when you life begins to wane You can look back and say to all I did not live in vain Sincerely your Friend, Dorothy L. The Student Council is the student voice in the government of their school. It is through this forum that .plans must be presented, grievances made, and sugges- tions aired. Without a strong and active Student Council, most student oriented affairs would be impossible. Central has had an historically active Stu- dent Council because of the spirit which its members have exhibited. This tradi- tion has been carried in the 198O,s by yet another group of competent and spirited Central students. This was only two years after the Civil War, and some of these students and faculty had experienced the battles of Westport, Independence and Lone Jack. Central began in a two room brick building on the Southeast corner of eleventh and Locust. The gym class consisted of a bean bag game for the girls and a turning pole for the boys. Graduations were held at the old Coates Opera House at tenth and Broadway. One assistant to the principal in 1873 was Mary Harmon, later Mary Harmon Weeks. She was only 18 years old so her age was not to be told. A brick addition was made in 1875, then in 1884 another three story building was added. In 1889 Central had 300 students and 10 teachers. By 1891, one thousand students were enrolled and the people of the school district voted S100,000 for a new building. The building was completed in December, 1873, connected to the old building by covered walkways on each floor, and separated by courts forty feet wide. The new assembly hall could seat more than 1700 students and there were 43 classrooms. In 1899, the first yearbook was published. The school year chaged in 1904 from 9 months to 10 months. In 1909, a one years' teacher training course was established at Central. The present building became the new location in 1915, at which time it was the longest structure in the city. Later the football field was added. Like many colleges, Central published a catalog of classes and was known for its excellence. After the court decision in 1954, Central changed from an all white school to a mixed school and finally to an all black school. Included among the alumni of Central's past is the famous Walt Disney.
