Counselors Eve Dixon Linda Donovan Harold Mensch Each student is assigned a Guidance Counselor who assists them with personal and academic problems which may arise in school. Edu- cational and Vocational planning, course selection, and improvement of study habits are some of the areas with which Counselors assist students. The services of the Guidance Department are available to all students and their parents. A number of students are assigned to a Counselor by alphabetical listing, and they remain with the same students throughout their high school years. This is in keeping with the developmental approach to Guidance which emphasizes the growth of the individual student. Counseling services are available on an individual and group basis both upon request and according to need. The duties of a Counselor fall into three areas: Working with students: working with the professional staff: and working with parents. Work- ing with students include counseling students on a referral or self-referral basis, administering and interpreting tests, planning and conduct- ing orientation programs, and counseling students in selecting courses for the following year. The Counselor holds conferences according to the students needs with various social agencies as well as appropriate staff members. Each Counselor consults with teachers in order to evaluate student progress, appropriate placement, and individual needs. The Counselor works closely with many school committees as well as with psychologist, Ph sicians, Community Agencies as the Division of Childhood and Family Services, Teenage Parent Center, Humbold Adjustment Center, etc. Counselors provide supportive services to the entire staff when- ever appropriate. The Counselor participates in student-teacher conferences and arranges meetings between parents and members of each Student-Study Group. The Counselor is available to interpret test results and review school records for parents in an attempt to help them make realistic educational and vocational plans for their children. Counselors also provide Career-and educational information and arrange for Home- Bound instruction and tutoring. It is the sincere hope of the Guidance and Courgeling Department that students and parents will take advantage of these services. incerely, Guidance and Counseling Department Eva L.
