Britton As we move forward into the eighties we pause for a moment to evaluate our achieve- ment of the seventies. In doing so, we perceive a great deal of satisfaction for our success and accomplishment of the past and now we look into the challenges of the eighties with dedica- tion and determination to make this the most exciting and successful decade in the history of Central High School. In order to attain our education goals and objective we must have a student body who is motivated to achieve, has an attitude to work cooperatively with others and exhibit a loyal dedication. Each student must have a determi- nation to develop a life of usefullness to the community and to this nation. Centralites, the task is yours during the eighties and the year ahead. Edu- cational and Vocational planning, course selection, and improvement of study habits are some of the areas with which Counselors assist students. The services of the Guidance Department are available to all students and their parents. A number of students are assigned to a Counselor by alphabetical listing, and they remain with the same students throughout their high school years. This is in keeping with the developmental approach to Guidance which emphasizes the growth of the individual student. Counseling services are available on an individual and group basis both upon request and according to need. The duties of a Counselor fall into three areas: Working with students: working with the professional staff: and working with parents. Work- ing with students include counseling students on a referral or self-referral basis, administering and interpreting tests, planning and conduct- ing orientation programs, and counseling students in selecting courses for the following year. The Counselor holds conferences according to the students needs with various social agencies as well as appropriate staff members. Each Counselor consults with teachers in order to evaluate student progress, appropriate placement, and individual needs. The Counselor works closely with many school committees as well as with psychologist, Ph sicians, Community Agencies as the Division of Childhood and Family Services, Teenage Parent Center, Humbold Adjustment Center, etc. Counselors provide supportive services to the entire staff when- ever appropriate. The Counselor participates in student-teacher conferences and arranges meetings between parents and members of each Student-Study Group. The Counselor is available to interpret test results and review school records for parents in an attempt to help them make realistic educational and vocational plans for their children. Counselors also provide Career-and educational information and arrange for Home- Bound instruction and tutoring. It is the sincere hope of the Guidance and Courgeling Department that students and parents will take advantage of these services. incerely, Guidance and Counseling Department Eva L. I have been hearing a few comments both positive and negative about the class from underclassmen. I think the reason for these comments are because they look up at the authority the Senior class holds in an envious way. In the past some member of the class of 80 would complain about a certain situation but only a few would act to correct it. Those few help to hold a bond which has become stronger and has formed a unity in the class. I have enjoyed working with them through good and bad times also in trial and error. To the Senior class from the Senior Sponsor may the best in life be with you. Mr. Fleinaldo M. Buso YNY L. Not anomer booki Central High, may I help you? ' 45 V , '1'.F1 T .. --.:' 1. . Because the cost of college is steadily rising, many high school graduates will face financial difficulty, these representatives are able to answer the vital question of financial aid, scholar- ships, academic as well as athletic opportunities. Central High School Counselors work diligently to provide the best college day possible by find- ing representatives from small colleges to some of the largest schools in the country. The Seniors and Juniors are given an opportunity to visit with three representatives of their choice. Q' .4 Above: Gary Slaughter, I really think that I can do it. The football program for 1979 was not a total success, but there were many bright spots. Our varsity team, competing with only four starting seniors, won only two games. But as a result, our many underclassmen put in plenty of playing time which should help them next season. We are now in the process of reorganizing our varsity program for 1980. With the return of 26 varsity and junior varsity players, along with 39 freshmen players, we are looking forward to next season. Another Bright spot in our overall program was the junior varsity team. With the careful guidance of Coach Cox and Coach Arnold, the junior varsity team went 5 and 1 for the season - Although the freshmen team ended up with a 3 and 3 record, there were many outstanding prospects. Run- ning backs, Sherman Dudley, Byron Clark, and Ruben Woods will be pushing some of the upper classmen for starting positions next year, Emanual Seals fcenterj Tyler Randle flinebackerj and Timothy Paige freceiverj are promising young men for the future. Micheal Cobbins fquarterbackj will also be pressing for a starting position. By implementing the veer offense and 5-2 defense into our spring practice, we are hoping for a better and successful football season. 76 wr Dixon, lack, L, team, put in junior -Coach . Reserve Officers Training Corps The program has been in exist- ence for approximately 60 years, at Central High School since 1921. The program of instruction was developed in coordination with and upon recommendation of Junior ROTC units located throughout the nation. lt includes a curriculum which provides a learning progression from one year to the next and selection of content appropriate to the inter- ests and capabilities of teenag- ers. At the same time, curriculum flexibility to accommodate indi- vidual cadets is retained. The existing philosophy and objectives of the program have not changed. The cultivation ol citizenship and leadership char- acteristies, vital to both civilian and military pursuits, is the basic program objective: The program is open to all male and female students 14 years old and in the 9th grade.
