Holland, D. Hightower, K. Davis. 100 NURSING E. Brooks, E. Bell, K. Washington, P. Hunter. K. Hayes, A. Davis, D. Watt, G. Gillespie. The pre-nursing class spends fifteen weeks doing bedside nursing care on three surgical units at the Veterans Administration Hospital. They also spend four weeks at Little Sisters of the Poor where they learn geriatric care on the infirmary wards. At the Foundation School for the Mentally Retarded they have the opportunity to spend four weeks, generally as classroom teacher’s aides. Their classroom academic activities include studying anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and abbreviations, normal nutrition, personal and community health, professional ethics, and most important of all-nursing fundamentals. Mr. Jack Bush For many years educators and employers have been aware of the increasing complexity of youth’s problem as they move from school to work. The explosion of the youth population, the technological revolution, and automation are all contributing to the seriousness of the problem. Assistance in the solution of this problem is a universal need of all youth, irrespective of their level of schooling or the job which they desire to enter. Because of the rapid changes taking place in all types of employment and the increasing complexity of entrance requirements, youth are confronted with an almost insurmountable task as they approach the age when they must choose and prepare themselves for entering a career. A large number end up on the unemployment list simply because they cannot cope with this problem. Public secondary schools throughout the country have accepted the responsibility of providing assistance to young people in analyzing and solving many of the problems related to choosing and preparing for a career. Many plans have been successfully used and various trypes of training have been provided. In many of the nation’s high schools a part of this responsibility has been met through programs of work experience education. Effective work experience education results only when a program encompasses a systematic plan whereby young people, while still in school, gain realistic employment experience through part-time work performed under school supervision and control. Many types of work experience programs are in operation in the school throughout the country. In any plan it is assumed that a student is employed part-time in a training situation that is supervised by the school and the pupil is enrolled in a school program that is related to the type of work in which he is engaged. This program in Kansas City, Missouri is called Cooperative Occupational Education and has as its purpose the extension of vocational learning opportunities for the pupil through part-time employment in the occupation of his choice. 102 Paula Rayford-Scars Roebuck James Wilson-A.T. Darden who has had eleven years of experience as a newspaperman. The Luminary is designed to keep the student body informed to the latest happenings at the school as well as encouraging them to become better students. This year’s Luminary Staff is composed of an editor-in-chief, assistant editors, page editors, legmen, a production manager, and a business manager. The editor-in-chief is the head of the entire staff, directing all other workers, both editorial and business. The assistant editors aid the editor-in-chief as well as write features and editorials. The page editors, aided by page assistants, are responsible for assigning, gathering, copyreading, and editing all news on the page. The legmen or reporters are very important. They go out and get the information needed when assigned a story. The production manager makes sure everything is ready for the production of the paper. The business manager takes care of all business and financial matters. When all the members of the staff work together, the result is an outstanding newspaper.
