Hljlwly 24 Independence, Mo. 64050 G E Foreword This is the story of a school whose roots are deep, strong and productive-one hundred years deep, thousands of graduates strong, producing young men and women eager to perpetuate their roots. This is the story of youth bursting with vigor, bubbling with enthusiasm, groping with knowledge, wrestling with problems, dreaming dreams, and fashioning a future full of promise, love and peace. Centennial, 1968, is not the end of our story. This is but a break in the sequence of significant events which go to make up our lives. We view this break with joy and pride in our accomplishments and hope and faith in the future. lt is at this pause that we express sincere thanks to all who have made our story worth telling, and to all who have helped to tell our story. Central, the first high school in the system, began in 1867-1868 when J. B. Bradley-then Super- intendent of Schools-taught such high school subjects as the students desired at the Central School. lt was not until the fall of 1869 that a regular four year high school program was begun. The first class-consisting of only five students fthree girls, two boysj-was graduated in 1873. Today, with a senior class of 488 and a faculty of over one hundred, we look back with pride and to the future with hope, May the second hundred years be even more fruitful than the first. l51.Tgg,Q.,f44 42' I at b '1 l . n I Centennial Float 517 . School Service Organizations School service organizations exist to help the staff perform various functions and to create a closer relation between students and faculty members. Such organizations include the Attendance Office Help- ers who assist in daily attendance reports, the Main Office Helpers who perform various duties such as directing parents and visitors upon their arrival at school. The Counsclofs Helpers keep records in order, file important data and aid in other clerical duties. The Nurse's Helpers attend to students for minor in- juries and file important data. The Honor Corps maintain order in the cafeteria by regulating lunch lines and seeing that tables are cleared upon leaving the cafeteria. The Usherettes direct people to their seats and distribute programs during school functions and activities. The Audio Visual Aids assist the coordin- ator by checking audio visual equipment and by making minor replacements and repairs to the equip- ment. Central takes pride in these organizations which are very important assets to our school. 1 J. if ROW O- Harrison Tindall, . W. The number of scholarship points required has been raised from time to time, eighteen now being necessary for two semesters in succession to become a member. A student may then wear the bronze pin. When he attains the required number of points for four semesters he may wear the silver pin, and for seven semesters, he may wear the coveted gold rn. P When pupils enter Central from other high schools in Kansas City, points are figured in the same manner as for Centralities. Those who enter from high schools outside the Kansas City District must wait one semester. Ifthey main- tain the required number of points during that semester, they are given full credit for the grades they brought with them and are placed in the proper group. Two assemblies are held each year. The purpose of the fall assembly is to honor the Sophomores and others who have just become eligible for membership. Outstanding Honor Society members conduct the fall assembly, and an in- spirational outside speaker talks at the spring assembly, which is Carnation Day, when those with gold pins wear white carnations, and those with silver or bronze, wear pink carnations. Since the Honor Society is open to any student and the purpose is to promote scholarship, the assembly ceremonies are the only activities of the society. Mrs. Bernice L. Evans is the sponsor. Officers are: President Jaimela Foster, Vice- President Deborah Williams, Secretary Truman Snow, Treasurer Vivian Tolbert, Sergeant at Arms Linda Lee. Bronze ROW ONE: F. Greene, S. Hunter, J. Established to honor high ranking girls in the ten senior high schools, the 'iOne Hundred l-ligh School Girlsw spon- sored by the American Association of University Women aims also to encourage them to continue their education in college. Each high school has a group of ten girls. Five girls are chosen during the first semester of their junior year and membership continues until graduation from high school, making a group of five juniors and five seniors. Membership in the group is based on class rank, but a girl failing to meet any one ofthe following requirements is not considered: lj Aptitude and achievements tests must indicate that the individual ranks in the upper one-fourth ofthe class, Zj Future plans must include probable college attendance, 3j The high school program ol' studies must bC planned so that it meets the college entrance recommendations given in the catalog of the Metro Junior College of Kansas Cityg 41 By the end of the junior year the individual must have at least ten academic units. When seniors are ranked at the close of the seventh semester, if the highest ranking girl is not a member, she is added to the group. Declarltwes The Declaratives is a leadership club at Central. There is, in all probability, no more select an organization in Central than the Declaratives. The members, who are chosen on the basis of scholastic achievement, are stu- dents who enjoy using their minds and like to develop interests in international, state, and local affairs. This organization performs a variety of activities which include giving an Alumni Tea at Christmas, pre- paring a coffee hour for the Philharmonic Orchestra, and selecting a team for the Categories Television Quiz Pro- gram. In a sense, we support any worthwhile activity which will promote Central High School. We strive to be a real servant to our school. Los Tertulianos LOS TERTULIANOS is Central's Spanish Club of about sixty members who are students of Spanish 4-6-8 and 10. Their purpose is to enjoy learning more about Spanish and Spanish people-their art, music, culture, history, customs, and to meet whenever possible people from those countries. At the same time, they like to get together and have fun as do the Spanish. Many members were guests of their sponsor, Miss Cody, when she gave a Thanksgiving Dinner in honor of Susana Priotti from Santa Fe, Argentina. The dinner was held at the home of Mrs, Merrill McLin, a relative of Miss Mary Gillis. Mrs. Gillis, Mary Gillis, and Mrs. McLin assisted Miss Cody. The guests were Mrs. Ingramfin charge of Foreign Exchange students in this area-and Mrs. Willard Shelton, American mother of Susana. Our highlight of the year is our Pan American Fiesta at Guadulupe Center, which is attended by several foreign guests as well as about sixty members. A foreign consul and a representative ofthe mayor crown the Pan American Queen. Frequently members attend a Spanish movie and a Spanish luncheon. A trip to Casa de Montez is being planned, as well as a trip to Kansas University for Cervantes Day. The President is June Conaway. ROW Clark Zollar, W. ', M. , J. Con- ton, B. 4. Burtin, li 10. Thus the selection ofthe field of work for training is an important decision and should be made on the basis of care- ful study and guidance. Therefore, enrollment in the C.O.E. Program should be limited to those students who have reasonable vocational objectives for which the program can provide worth-while assistance. Mr. Day, C.O.E. coordinator, suggests that lj Students be permitted to enroll in C.O.E. during their junior and senior years, 25 Enrollment be limited to those students with a satisfactory vocational objective, sixteen years of age good attendance record, average or better citizenship record and grades commensurate with their ability: 31 The course be scheduled as a full-year subject with students being permitted to enroll at mid-term, 41 The student's pro- gram be two subjects and preferably three, including the related study course in addition to the job training schedule 1 ROW CI N. Stewart, Coach Michael. 1967 City Champions Centralis Mighty Blue Eagles, coached by Harold Michael and John Hottenstein, fittingly celebrated our hundredth year by winning the City Football Championship. The Eagles, with only five returning lettermen, were underrated at the begin- ning of the season due to their lack of experience. However, Central upset the ratings by defeating area powers. In the only pre-season game, Central defeated Southwest 7-6. The Eagles then began the league season with a 27-7 vic- tory over East. Their league record was hiked to 2-0 by beating Westport 19-7. The Eagles then suffered a setback by losing to Southwest 7-17. Fortunately, the setback was only temporary, and the Eagles flew high the rest ofthe season. At their homecoming game, the Eagles crushed Lincoln 22-6. Surging onward, they blanked Northeast and Manual, 6-O and 19-0. Central then faced their final game against Van Horn. A victory was needed to gain at least a tie for the lnterscholastic League crown. The Eagles set out determined, and emerged as the victors, 12-0. Van Horn's later defeat of Southeast gave the Eagles sole possession of the crown. The Eagles wound up their season with a 7-1 record. A good coaching staff, asolid defense, and several key passes were the winning factors for the Eagles. Central's Eagles were paced by Seniors Reauxdell McMurry, an All-State selection, John Freeman, Richard Allen, Andrew Henson, and Grover Jones. Outstanding Juniors who will return to boost the Eagles again next year include Marvin Foster, Maurice Bishop, and William Mosley. il FIP Cl C :Sa H ff., M, -, -A g L Rf' 1:1 ' ,,, 32' J ' Q ai N r ll' i.....v... 24 gr Lllul I X - 'W 5- R. Cross-Country Central's Varsity cross-country team was in the classic rebuilding season this year, having lost six of the seven members ofthe 1966 squad. Richard Hazley was the only returning member of that Championship squad. The Varsity ran best in the Ruskin Invitational, resulting in a surprise second place finish. They ended the season with a fine seventh place finish in the State Meet. Tom Boyd, a 49.8 quarter miler, was the most consistent runner for the Blue Eagles. Leading the squad in the latter part of the season was a junior, Clarence Dottrey. Returning next year along with Dottrey are Tom Davis, Errol Riggins, Renard Lawson, and Jimmy Moon to offer the Eagles hope for the future. The Junior Varsity cross-country squad was led by Lawson, Moon, Robert Davis, Ronald Dunnell, and Virgil Randolph. Coached Cemffil by Jim Wilkinson, the Eagles started the season with three straight victories over St. Pius, Springheld, and Pem Day. Cemfal fig, Central then suffered their first loss of the season from St. Louis Sumner. Central Ll Rapidly recuperating, the Eagles went on to capture the lnterscholastic League Tournament title by defeating East, Central Southeast, and arch-rival Paseo. Seven successive victories were posted over Rockhurst, Lincoln, Manual, Van Horn, Cemfal f ' Southeast, De La Salle, and Northeast. Then to everyone's surprise, Paseo handed the Eagles their first league loss in five years. Stunned by their second loss, Central went on to beat East, but received another blow from KCK Sumner. 160 In what was one of the Eagles hardest fought battles, Sumner defeated them 44-42. The Eagles went on to post league victories over Westport and Southeast. Central finished with an 8-1 league mark, which was good enough to share the League title with co-champions Paseo. The Eagles kingpin this year was Senior Reauxdell McMurry, who could always be counted on for top performances in rebounding and scoring. Gary Bandy, David Smith, Marvin Foster, Richard Allen, and Walter Roby were also key factors in the Eagles victories. Seniors on the team are Richard Allen, James Pomroy, Robert Strickland, Michael Arm- strong, and Reauxdell McMurry. Not to be forgotten is the coaching staff. Coach Wilkinson is probably the best basketball coach the state has ever seen. He is to be commended for the many basketball honors he has brought to Central. tdy, W. . Taking into consideration that Central is the youngest wrestling team in the city and this is only our second wrestling season, one can readily see that we are well on our way to having an outstanding team. Giving credit where credit is due, Coach Garner and thc wrestling boys have ably carried on the Central tradition of sportsmanship and achievcmcnt. Especially cited for their achievements are: Fred McClain with a 7-2 record, Harding Hyche with a 7-3 1eco1d,Bcrry Ald- ridge with a 5-l record, and Joe Allen with a 4-2 record. 167 Wrestling Candids 1 K E 1 Andrew Howard Lloyd Johnson ll v ' v Chris MCFHYUIX Joe Allcn Phillip Randle James Hootcn ! 1 ZLTVEJ x - fuk.
