A ff. -5 Foreword The '66 Centralian -to twenty-two Centralites these words will always represent nine months of hard Work, fun, and fond memories. We,the members of the Centralian staff, have put our best into this yearbook, and have endeavored to preserve in it some of the spirit and life that are an important part of Central. By binding into one cover as many memories as possible, We have created what one day will be one of our only connections with days gone by. Our earnest hope is that the years will serve not to tarnish the brightness of these memories, but in- stead, to illuminate and to endear them. N -N N Hx, Table of Contents FACULTY . STUDENTS .... ORGANHLYUONS . ELOfDC ...... SPORTS.. Wfhe Making of an Eagle One of the first steps in creating a yearbook is the choosing of a theme - that one idea which must serve to represent and unite all the ideas found inside. The '66 Centralian staff has chosen The Making of an Eagle as this year'stheme. We feel that one ofthe most important aspects of high school life is the student's growth from an inexperienced freshman to a wise, old senior . This growth is one that should lead to a physical, intellectual, and social maturity, and the memories you collect in your growth from eaglet to eagle should be preserved for years to come. The Making of an Eagle is a challenging but satisfying journey from adolescence to maturity, naivete to wisdom, and from anticipation to reality. IXCULT 6 1, f f-'9fWE fgqgri ' C6967 6? '-41 Magma 5 ,, me , JAMES F. BOYD Principal TO CLASS OF '66 We have tried to teach in this short time Those things that are of value to your mind, And know that each of you will acquire Those things in life that you desire. If you have studied with the thought in view To serve those things which are honest and true, And set your goals on action sure To serve those things which are just and pure, Or worked on plans to screen and sort To serve those things lovely and of good report. wie W , if 8 ,e 2 W CARL M. This is not just another idle boast, but rath- er a statement of how things are, and hopefully, how things shall be, as long as We are in this class. For We are no ordinary class. We shun medioc- rity. We strive to be the best in every- thing We attempt. We are trying to loe- come capable school leaders, and to set an example for all loyal Centralites to follow. We are, and will continue to be, the pace-setters of Central High School. In accomplishing this We hope to show the other classes what can be done and what should be done. ln im- 46 proving the other classes, along with outselves, We also improve Central. We move Central High School past the category of good , on to the category of GREAT, We are by no means perfect, but in essence, our only goals are excellence and supremacy in all endeavors. These goals are Within our grasp, and within the grasp of Central High School, at this very mo- ment. WE shall NOT fail to achieve these high standards. The 1965 football season was hailed by many as the best in the history of Central. Our team was blessed with a powerful backfield and a strong line. With the key blocking of such lineman as Artis Tho- mas, Frank Winfield, Bennie Lewis, Carl Clayton, Robert Tyus, Edward Vaughn, and Steve Kelow, our quarterback Mike Hicks was able to engineer scoring plays with our fast and agile backs, Norris White, Phil Cosey, Steve Hatten, Robert Bailey, and Taylor Spriggs Our team would not have been able to win with offense onlyg it took an excellent defense led by Nate Harris, Racior Cavole, Walter Hill, and many more outstanding players. 1 'Q W , ae, muff -f Eagles Soar Higl We should not only recognize the players, but also the coaching that made the team successful. Coach Harold Michael and Assistant Coach Gerald Walker led the Eagles to an 8-1 overall record which placed us in the number two spot in the area standings and a 7-0 record in the league, making us the 1965 City Champions. Thirteen of our players were named to the All-Star City and District teams and Taylor Spriggs, Artis Thomas, Robert Tyus, and Steve Kelow were named to the All-Star Team. We, the students at Central, should commend these men for a job well done. Shown are Co-Captains Taylor Spriggs and Artis Tho- mas out for the toss. Both Spriggs and Thomas were named to the All-State Team for their outstanding performances during the season. , 1,,, may wmafaluwm -,nl M 196 Season Scores Central 27 Lincoln 7 Central 13 De La Salle 15 Central 33 Northeast 12 Central 27 Manual 12 Central 28 Van Horn 6 Central 39 Paseo I O Central 25 Southeast 7 Central 52 East O Central 34 Westport O LEFT TO RIGHT: Coach H. Central's young cross-country team upset the favorites this year. Led by Ron Henry, city champion, and Wil- lie Williams, Central upset favored Westport for the City Championship, and then put the icing on the cake by stunning heavily favored Raytown South in the District Meet. Returning along with Henry and Williams for the next year will be ju- niors Mickey Sutherlin, Otis Kenny, and Tom Mason, and sophomores Harold Epperson and Harry Davis. Graduating are Darrell Martin and Joe Mabin. Coach Harvey Greer is the person responsible for coaching the Eagles to their outstanding victories. In addition to a championship football squad and anticipated repeats of last year's track victories, the Screamin' Eagles basketball team took the whole ball of wax. . . . City, Regional and State which had not been won by a Kansas City Class L team in thirty-one years. At the beginning of the season, the Eagles dropped two of their first six ball games. Things could not have looked worse. As the season pro- gressed. Central's record creeped upward and by midseason there was hope. Blessed by one of the best bal- anced teams in years, Central stormed through the league on their way to an l72 8-O record and their 4th consecutive Interscholastic League Championship. This balanced ball club, guided by the strong hand of Coach Jim Wilk- inson and Assistants Buddy Hudson and George Huitt, moved through the quarter-finals, semi-finals and into the finals. The stage was set. The Blue Eagles' opponent was to be Spring field Parkview, a team that beat them by twenty-three points earlier in the season, a team that was defending champion, and a team that had won forty-nine straight games! At the final horn, it was Central 52 - Springfield 48. A fitting addition to The Year of The Eagles! -and iifblw L,1'!!2 7254: Q Q M' 2-.Q if H? it iff I 'D xfwv? I 'if L 1,5 2 f A.
