.Z . There is growing conviction that our society demands that all who have the ability must receive at least a high school education. At the same time it is demanded that graduation from high school represent a high standard of academ-ic accomplishment. The class of 1962 now emerges from a program of study that was designed with a sensitivity to these two demands. In a broader sense, responsiveness to the needs of the young people of today has dictated that your educational experiences also provide an opportunity for development in many other areas that are considered vital for effective living in our society. Upon the shoulders of your generation, the emerging adults, rests a heavily awesome responsibility-the preservation of mankind. Somehow, you must find a way to build on to the foundation of your high school work a purposeful educational structure that not only exploits your fullest potential, but also contributes positively to man's relationship to man. The extent to which you are able to accomplish this will reduce by that much the crucial lack that now colors the affairs of mankind. It will also be a measure of true success. My congratulations and best wishes to you. Robert R. Wheeler One important objective of Central High Schoo1's educa- tion is to develop leadership among its students with the hope that they may go into community and national life with convic- tion and purpose. Leadership is basically the art of accomplish- ing a mission through people. Leadership cannot be just a man- date or an order. It must have a purpose, an explanation or reason that influences another person to think the matter through, to evaluate, reach conclusions and make decisions. One may say leadership is the acceptance of moral responsibilities. God, through your parents, gave you intelligence, Central has been instrumental in directing it. Through your associations at Central, you have also developed a knowledge of human understanding and the meaning of what it is to have the courage of conviction. Intelligence, understanding and courage when properly Combined will give you the authority to lead your fellow man. It is the faculty's hope and desire that you graduates of '62 have acquired at Central these abilities for usefulness and happiness. Allis A. Keith 'I 1
