There is growing conviction that our society demands that all who have the ability must receive at least a high school education. At the same time it is demanded that graduation from high school represent a high standard of academ-ic accomplishment. The class of 1962 now emerges from a program of study that was designed with a sensitivity to these two demands. In a broader sense, responsiveness to the needs of the young people of today has dictated that your educational experiences also provide an opportunity for development in many other areas that are considered vital for effective living in our society. Upon the shoulders of your generation, the emerging adults, rests a heavily awesome responsibility-the preservation of mankind. Somehow, you must find a way to build on to the foundation of your high school work a purposeful educational structure that not only exploits your fullest potential, but also contributes positively to man's relationship to man. The extent to which you are able to accomplish this will reduce by that much the crucial lack that now colors the affairs of mankind. It will also be a measure of true success. My congratulations and best wishes to you. Robert R. Wheeler One important objective of Central High Schoo1's educa- tion is to develop leadership among its students with the hope that they may go into community and national life with convic- tion and purpose. Leadership is basically the art of accomplish- ing a mission through people. Leadership cannot be just a man- date or an order. It must have a purpose, an explanation or reason that influences another person to think the matter through, to evaluate, reach conclusions and make decisions. One may say leadership is the acceptance of moral responsibilities. God, through your parents, gave you intelligence, Central has been instrumental in directing it. Through your associations at Central, you have also developed a knowledge of human understanding and the meaning of what it is to have the courage of conviction. Intelligence, understanding and courage when properly Combined will give you the authority to lead your fellow man. It is the faculty's hope and desire that you graduates of '62 have acquired at Central these abilities for usefulness and happiness. Allis A. Keith 'I 1 MISS HORTENSE P. We realize how far through the arch of experience and knowledge we have progressed toward the horizon of life, which we see ever fading as we have taken the forward steps. Milestones that we will leave for the juniors to measure their achievements by are not a few. Our high scholastic students are Burnetta Anderson, Carolyn Bryant, Forestal Lawton, Sherilyn Myers, Deborah Thomas, Sharon Smith, and Barbara Vertreese. The awards we have won include second place in the American Legion Oratorical Contest by Forestal Lawton, All City First Team Football, Robert Wright, Eagle Scout Award, Don Holbert from Delano. This is a very great achievement, because he won this despite his crutches. Our usual school contests had able representation: United Cam- paign, Ronald Holden, Betty Crocker, Rose Weldon, Youth and Government, Judy Miller, Ed Scott, Deborah Thomas, and Richard Tolbertg N.R.O.T.C., Richard Tolbertg and Annual Music Contest, Cheryl Williams. These are but the early few of our successes. Our hopes are high and our determination great that the glorious flame of renown will not be dimmed by the 1962 graduates. In anticipation we look forward to a life of usefulness to our country and happiness for ourselves. Yvonne Young SENIOR PROPHECY Worn by the daily grind and from the pressure of dead lines I doubled my dose of tranquilizers and reclined, as'best I could, in my desk in 301. Head on arms, I soon was in the company of Morpheus. He took me by the arm, and Whiz! in rocket-like speed we crossed the twenty-five years and I found myself in 1987, at the north door of Dear Old Central. A wave of the hand and I was whisked to the fifth floor. CI dimly recalled the struggle we went through back in 1961-62 for an elevatorl. How I had always wished for an opportunity to roam the attic! Attic? My word! Here was the most glamorous banquet, dance hall, audi- torium all rolled into one, done in platinum! Out shining Liberace! In silver armour sat smiling George Hern- don playing the diamond studded piano! George's grey- ing sideburns and goatee gave him a distinguished appearance as he whisked out his coat tails and started The Storm of Nature. his most recent composition. Near the piano stood Judy Miller, Cheryl Williams, Jacklyn Thompson, and Brenda Locke in shimmering decollete, ready to repeat their success at the Metropoli- tan. Rushing over from the refreshment tables to greet me were more of my former classmates. Time had dealt kindly with them. I recognized Richard Tolbert, now a director in the New York Stock Exchange, Forestal Lawton, a criminal lawyer in Hollywood, Ronald Holden, a professor of mathematics at Harvardg Jose- phine Daniel, head of Occupational Therapy at Research Hospitalg Brenda Dunson, taking a few hours off from her very successful run as Lady MacBeth on Broadway. I broke reluctantly away from this group to meet glamorous Deborah Thomas who I found to be the owner and chief designer of a dress shop, counting the crowned heads of Europe as patrons. With Deborah were Carolyn Bryant and james Burgess. Carolyn is the successful nominee for the senate seat left vacant by Ernest Brown, who is the ambassador to Ethiopia. james, with ribbon and star across his chest, is the first Poet Laureate of the United States. I caught a glimpse of three charming women greeting a fourth. There was something familiar about themq So taking the arm of Rose Wfeldon, professor of Home Economics at Smith, we crossed to join Sharon Smith, Barbara York, and Chequita Shaw who were welcoming home from Germany Marion Eden. Each of these women are married to successful business men and glowed in the satisfaction they were having as members of the Young Matrons' Club. On my way for a cup of punch now more popular than Coca Cola. I met its inventor and dhe main stock- holder in Pinchola, Louis O'Neal. With him was Rich- ard Carter now head librarian of the Plaza Branch Library. Richard was suggesting to Louis that he employ Barbara Vertreese to design his new summer home at The Lake of the Ozarks. CShe has the assignment to straighten the Leaning Tower of Pisa.D Barbara sug- gested we go over to the South Wall to view the mural painted by Robert Bass, the winner of the Thomas Hart Benton award for native art. By Robert was Jacqueline Smith, flush with satisfaction from hearing of the sale of the millionth record of her rendition of Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes. john Collins, football coach at K.U., we see, made his most coveted touchdown, for by his side is Sandra Walker wearing a sparkler and wedding ring. With them is Evelyn jones whose column My Word for It appears daily in the Star. My tranquilizers having spent their effect, I was rudely awakened by the lunch bell and I joined the angry mob in the cafeteria for my daily carbohydrate binge, determining to try jumping time and space again soon for a peep into the future. Yours truly, The Centralians 39 K' N DELANO fc? 40 R. J. DeLano School is a school for orthopedically handicapped children from kindergarten through high school. Situated on the northside of Linwood Boulevard it forms the third in the Central group. In 1940 Central became the accrediting agency for R. J. DeLano School, thus enabling the graduating seniors to be graduated with the Central Seniors and to receive a Central diploma. These graduates, while taught in the main by a homeroom teacher, have the privilege to enter a university with- out question as to the fulfillment of their requirements. In 1943, under their principal, Mrs. Nell Dabney and the Central principal, Mr. Otto F. Dubach, the first graduating class was graduated. Many of these young people have gone on to high institutions of learning and have earned bachelors and masters degrees. This year five young people are completing their secondary school work and will receive their diplomas with the Central class. Mrs. Olivia E. Mathewson is the homeroom teacher and Miss Mary Alice Gibbons is principal of R. J. DeLano School. This year the class conducted a second Care Drive, under the sponsorship of Mr. J. H. Cooper. Care buttons were soldg con- tributions were collected, a humorous skit presented in the auditorium to an audience paying a dime for admittance, and a Valentine's Day mixer was held, admittance, a quarter. All these projects netted upwards of 324000. The crowning of Toledia Mc- Intryre as Care Queen by Mr. Cooper was a special feature of the Valentine mixer. Standing on a platform decorated in red and white crepe paper, tiara on her head, flanked by her princesses, Toledia was a very attractive queen. Much credit for ad- vancing the cause of the drive is due Claudia DeGraffenreid. The class sponsors this year are Mrs. Burkhart, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Nelson, Miss Schaller, and Mr. Weigers. .,.. FIRST SEMESTER TUDE T COUNCIL The purpose of the Student Council is to provide student government and to promote better relations with other schools. Its members are chosen by the homerooms while the entire school votes for the president and vice- president. In order to be a member of the Council, a student must have an 'M' average and good character ratings. The Council held meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. This group of Centra1's finest were ably supported by their two sponsors, Miss Leibengood and Mr. Cooper. The first activity planned by the Council was a free mixer held in the boys' and girls' gyms. A United Campaign drive conducted by the Special Funds committee was then held in which the Central District contributed more than any other district. The Special Funds committee took charge of the March of Dimes campaign, their second project of the year. The Constitution committee proved to be one of the busiest for the Council as they revised the Council constitution, completed the Code of Ethics, and wrote the much needed Handbook. The final project for the first semester Council was a mixer for the purpose of raising money. This year, the Council was not only active in school affairs but also took an active part in the All-City Stu- dent Council and sent seven representatives to the re- gional meeting of Missouri Student Councils. However, three votes had to be taken before Ronald Holden was elected president. Brenda Locke was elected vice-presi- dent. Taking the ball from there the homerooms chose the members to make up the remainder of the council. From this number Deidra Thomas was chosen secretary and William Brown was chosen sergeant-at-arms. This completed the cabinet along with the president, vice- president, and students who tried out for president. With Ronald as president, and Miss Liebengood and Mr. Cooper as sponsors, the council carried out several ac- tivities. BOTTOM ROW, Left to Right: P. Beene, P. Frierson, C. Rollins, A. Smith, G. BOOSTERS The Boosters is a club which grew out of Miss Kite's English Literature classes in 1959-60. Twenty enthusiastic senior girls rallied to the need to increase lag- ging Luminary subscriptions and football season ticket sales. Their interest embraced any worthy cause for the good of the school and by chance they became known as the Boosters , This spirit has prevailed. Whenever there seemed to be a lag, the Boosters gave the cause a boost! This year under Rose Weldon's presidency these girls in blue and white jacket have been seen in the cafeteria, halls, and in the auditorium supporting Central in the Central-way. In order to be a Library Page, a student must have an 'M' average and his average must not drop after he starts working. Being a Page is also an honor for the student for he is in a very select group. The Page is initiated to the many things about the Library that the average student never sees. A Page must return books to the shelves in their correct order. He must also know how to check out books and be pre- pared to actually run the Library in the absence of the Librarian. Each Page in the Library is assigned specific duties that he must perform. This year Richard L. ' Harold lviichael Gwynne Coombs Coach Arrirtant Coach Central's 1961 football squad in compiling a 5 and 2 league record produced its best season since the 1958 campaign. With 11 returning lettermen, the mighty Eagles opened the season against Westport. In a very hard-fought contest the Tigers came out with an 8-point advantage. One bright spot for the Eagles was a 94-yard sprint from scrimmage for a touchdown. The next week the Eagles started a 5 game winning streak -against the Redbirds of Manual. By the end of the game the Eagles had rolled up 33 points and the alert Eagle defense kept the Redbirds inside their 50 yardline. The fighting Pirates of Paseo took a few breaths before succumbing to the Eagle tidal wave the next week in an 18 to 6 victory for the Eagles. In one of the hardest fought games of the swson, the Eagles squeezed by the East Bears 7 to 6 in a televlsed contest. The gaiety of Homecoming was further evidenced as the Eagles cnlshed the Tigers of Lincoln by a score of 26 to 0. The defense played one of their 124 l96l RECORD Westport Central Manual Central Paseo Central East Central Lincoln Central Northeast Central Southeast Central St. Joe C. With fa combination of cold Weather and the single wing offense of Southeast, the season and the winning streak of the Eagles ended. The Knights racked the Eagles 27 to 0. In a post-season game the Golden Eagles of St. joe C.B. slipped by our Blue Eagles 6 to O. This was a season that Centralities will long remem- ber. Games were Well attended by students. Their faithfulness was well rewarded by our representation on the all-star teams. Halfback Robert Wright was selected for the first team of Interscholastic stars. End Adolphus Mooney and Center Richard Tolbert were on the second team. John Collins, Ed Scott, and Ronald Howard were selected for the third team. Robert Wright and Ronald Howard were also selected for the all district teams. BOTTOM ROW, Left to Right: B. Frizell, C. jones, E. Moore, R. Clifton, W. Redmond, W. Thompson, J. Hicks, R. Green D. The tough Eaglet defense played a key role in the Little Blue wins. The speedy backfield rolled up 18 touchdowns in 7 league games. Shutting out four of their opponents, the Eaglets racked up 111 points while limiting their opponents to 32. In their first two league games, the Eaglets ran by Westport and Manual with scores of 36 to 12 and 24 to 0. Stunned by the Cubs of East the Eaglets suffered a 13 to 6 loss in their next game. Not to be dismayed by the loss, however, the Eaglets shut out Paseo 6 to 0, Lincoln 12 to 0, and Southeast 13 to 0. In their next game with the Vikings of Northeast, the Eaglets wrapped up the title with a 13 to 7 victory. In a non-league contest the Eaglets lost to the Wm. Chrisman Bears 21 to 0. The experience gained by our fine championship team should provide many thrills for Varsity fans in years to come. . 125 as at Q The Girls Sport Club is organized to promote health and happiness, to create an active interest in girls athletics, and to promote school spirit. I962 VARSITY The 1961-62 basketball edition of the Central Eagles compiled the best record of a Central team under the reign of James Wilkinson, Varsity Coach at Central for three years. After placing third in the Interscholastic League Tourna- ment, the mighty Eagles successfully opened league play with a thrilling 60 to 55 win over Paseo. The Eagles then suffered a heart-breaking 60-53 loss to Raytown. The loss, however, did not upset the Eagles as they reeled off 5 straight victories. Rated as one of the top teams in the area, the Eagles ran by Manual, East, and Southwest by scores of 54 to 375 57 to 43, and 60 to 36. The Eagles then ran their league record to five wins and no losses with a two-point 33 to 31 victory over Westport. Traveling to St. Joseph to avenge a football defeat, the Blue Eagles crushed the Central High School Indians 43 to 37. Having compiled a 10 to 2 record, the Eagles set the stage for the game of the year with the Knights of Southeast. In a very hard fought contest, the Knights solved the Eagle defense and won 64 to 52. The Eagles got back on the winning side by beating Northeast 51 to 40. They then crushed the Tigers of Lincoln 61 to 54 before being edged by Van Horn 47 to 44. This year the Eagles were paced by sophomore Warren Armstrong and senior Melvin Estell. However, john Collins, Charles jackson, Robert Wright, Kermit McMurray, and Adolp- hus Mooney could always be counted on for outstanding per- formances. FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: H. Turner, E. Burgette, R. FRESHMAN TEAM. The Freshman team at Central, in its second year of operation has proven its worth by turning out many fine players. This team gives many freshman boys the opportunity to play in league competition. 5,3 Rodney' Lynk prepares to pole vault. , Walter Bartlett is set to go. ,,,,,,,g,,,. .,,. ...r , r.,.,........-0.-. The track season at Central is divided into three parts: Cross-country, indoor, and outdoor. Cross- country is run in the fall during the football season. Cross-country is one of the more strenuous types of track for it consists of distant running. Several of the meets this year were held during the half-time of football games. Centra1's team performed well this year in winning most of their meets. The second part of track is indoor track. Central's team performed far better than expected. 'In addition to excelling in the sprints, the Blue Eagles added several field events to their wings. The mighty Eagles ran by their first three opponents: Wm. Chrisman, Northeast, and Rockhurst by scores of 68 to 22g 60 to 34, and 64 to 51. In these three meets, the Eagles won 15 of 21 sprints and 10 of 15 field events. The highlight of the indoor season came with the Big Eight Track and Field Meet held in Municipal Auditorium. The Eagles, who won last year's event, won again this year with 20 points. Their closest opponent had 14. The third part of the track season is similar to indoor 'track only it is held outdoors in the spring of the year. This part of the track season is high- lighted by the State Meet held at the University of Missouri. I962 TRACK TEAM BOTTOM ROW, Left to Right: D. Doolin, J. Byers, W. son, A. Jennings, F. Pratt, L.
