IN MEMORIAM A jovial, kindly man was Mr. John E. Evans. Ever given to optimism, his manner was free and easy with his students and colleagues. Although his subject was social science and he was ever a loyal and proud advocate of the American way, his real enthusiasm was athletics, which was never long out of his conversation. For many years he was athletic manager and always the best booster in school for support of the team whatever it happened to be. Mr. Evans was at his best on the platform, where he held the student body in the hollow of his hand, so to speak; for he could sway them with a friendly smile, a twinkle in his eye, a shrug of his shoulder, and a peppy talk to go out and help the team win the honors for dear old Central. Mr. Evans had a serious side, too. He spoke effectively on a religious or moral issue and made a beautiful and impressive prayer. His interest in religion manifested itself especially in the forty-two years of continuous service which he gave to the Linwood Hi-Y. This service was honored by the Y” only recently when they awarded him a plaque in recognition of his work with the boys. Although he gave his endeavors to these activities for boys, he was impartial in his interest in his students, befriending any boy or girl in need of a friend. Will Rogers’ famous line might be so paraphrased for Mr. Evans, I never had a student whom I did not like. And his students liked him! His assignment in the school can be filled, but his place in the life of Central cannot be.
