Presented by THE 1959 CENTRALIAN STAFF Co-Editors-in-Chief john McDonald MABEL YOUNG Business Monoger SANDRA SCOTTEN Class and Index Editor LINDA LEGLER Organizations Editor CAROL SUE SCHNEIDER Foculty and Athletic Editor JOAN BURT Photographer NORMAN RUNYON CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL Kansos City, Missouri With Sputniks ond missiles disturbing the tranquillity of space and the Berlin controversy rocking the world, the disturbances the Centralion Staff has had seem minor. Even though collecting fees and payments, counting and getting a balance; making the copy fit its space and achieving an even right-hand margin; corraling the subjects for photographs; and editing the Book has seemed at times more than seven of us could handle; you see, we did it! Thanks to Miss Kite and Mr. Kolb As we look back it was great! Not only did we learn a lot, but we grew to love Central even more than we did before. To honor our administration and faculty we have given number one spot to them. For the patience, inspiration, and encouragement they have given us, we shall ever be grateful. MR. PAUL M. MARSHALL, Principal Central High School is a well-constructed building erected some forty years ago by a community that cared and wanted her young people to have the best preparation for the future. Located in a community where men of vision dreamed of the future when this city of moderate size would cover much of the farmlands around, with factories, office buildings, parks, schools, churches, and homes. They dreamed that the boys and girls in Central and other schools of the community would continue that dream. That they, too, would dream of the future The fathers and mothers in the early days dreamed truly; the boys and girls then in Central carried our their dream of a great city. Fathers and mothers still dream and they are dreoming of your future and the community in which you live. Such is life, and that future is before our Seniors today as they leave the halls of Central. What will the future be? Will you carry on and see that the boys ond girls of the future have on opportunity in a community that cares about where they live, that they have a wholesome community, an opportunity to work and play, a place to worship? It is in your hands what Kansas City is a half century in the future. MR. GIRARD T. BRYANT, Vice Principal No age is as challenging as the present; none has offered greater opportunity to the truly inspired person. Technological society con be organized only around trained and disciplined minds. The future offers little for the laggard. It is my fervent hope that every Central graduate of the class of '59 shall, in some way, great or small, make his or her unique contribution to this astounding era. MR. GAYLE T. CHUBB, Vice Principal During these days of national tension the schools are challenged at every turn to train pupils to meet the needs of the country. Central is doing an excellent job in preparing boys ond girls to be successful in their future careers. You, the members of the senior class of 1959, have the potential to fashion your own lives so that you will be a credit to your school, your family, your friends, and your nation. MR. DAVID M. KIRK, Counselor I am sure each graduate is aware of the role he will play as a free individual in a free society. You are no doubt aware that you have personal responsibilities to that society and to the world in general. ♦ . i have this sense of awareness you have a desire  jrn and to know. Ycu have a sense of the future, a t gnition of change and an uncompromising in-•stence upon thoroughness. May each of you play his role well. MISS HORTENSE SCHALLER, Counselor Great satisfaction has come to me as I have seen vou develop into leaders willing to accept responsibility, devote unselfish time and effort to honor Central, become aware of your capabilities, and each of you become an important member of your class. All of us ore richer for the expanded horizons in the real meaning of the word of the individual. Each of you has the responsibility to be the best person you can be—all the time—everywhere. DIERSON He was a scholar, learned, wise, and true. A Christian both in deed and thought; He loved himself the Golden Rule he taught. Chaucer Dignity is the word most Centralifes feel best characterizes Mr. Dierson. His quiet demeonor, his careful attire, ond his pleasant countenance set him opart in any group of teachers. His classroom manner inspired attention and odult behavior from his pupils. As one of his pupils wrote, Always staunch and prepared for anything, he would laugh with the class at a joke on himself as readily as if it were on another. With kind eyes he would begin his class, made colorful with his vast knowledge or enriched with selections from Nelson's History. His students were always sure that his personal concern and help were sincere and ready when they were needed. He never intentionally embarrassed a student. Both boy and girl clubs have enjoyed his sponsorship, which was active and loyal The Jeffersons will long remember him as a co-founder who, with Miss Kite, led the boys to the cup their first year. His retirement, well-earned, will give him more time for enjoyment of his garden and grandchild; but unless he moves away from the district, he will probably be an every-now-and-then visitor to Central. MR. G. L. DOUTHITT Of high ideals and virtue was his speech; And gladly would he learn and gladly teach. Chaucer I feel Central has lost a great teacher, was the remark of some and sanctioned by the less vocal of his students when Mr. Douthitt donned his coat and hat and closed his classroom door for the last time Lawyer, psychologist, ond teacher extraordinary; his classroom manner inspired attention, respect, and affection from his pupils. His learning was balanced by his gentleness, his seriousness by his drollery; and his reserve by his genuine friendliness He loved a good argument, interspersed with lectures with sound advice, and held his classes spellbound in his narration of some of his many experi-ences. Meticulously neat, traveled, and qifted musically—he spends hours at his Hammond organ—Mr. Douthitt was an excellent representative of the profession he hod chosen to dignify and so inspired many of his students to choose an educational career. Although he loved his profession he took voluntary retirement to satisfy his love of travel and the leisure he had long coveted. MISS NEVA E. WING The reason firm, the temperate will, Endurance, foresight, strength, and skill; A perfect woman, nobly planned, To warn, to comfort, and command. Wordsworth Miss Wing's gracious hospitality has inspired and delighted her many pupils and her colleagues. A connoisseur of household arts and family relations, a warm, expansive nature; a sense of humor and fair play modestly characterizes Miss Wing Always thoughtful for the comfort of others, she set an example of consideration to her pupils by permitting them to prepare and carry an appetizing tray to a frail or sorrowing teacher; and often spent money for clothing or needed supplies for an indigent pupil. Happy indeed were her classes when holiday luncheons were the lessons of the week. Taste buds were educated, culinary skills developed, and artistry perfected through skills developed in 406, as many a bride can testify. Inspiring her girls to success in competition was Miss Wing's forte. Two silver trays, which enhance any tea given at the school, were won by her classes for the best set table in Hall's table setting contest. Her loyalty to Central, her strength in adversity, and her Christian faith will keep her remembrance vivid while she is enjoying her retirement in her comfortable homes here and in Michigan. • Tw Sometimes we hove felt organizations took more of cur time and attention than our classes; but whot would the seniors hove after their nomes if we didn't hove organizations? In a big school we get our fellowship ond cur training in leadership ond working together in our clubs and societies. ,q nlz3tlon First Semester Student Council Officers LEFT TO RIGHT: Jock Hefter, Nancy Shull, Miss Leiben-good, Earl Evans, Pete Peterson, Wayne Shipley, Koren Mosteller, Tim Frazier. Under the capable direction of Miss Rebekah Leibengood and President Earl Evans, the first semester Student Council accomplished numerous tasks. Notes of sympathy were sent to faculty members and students in case of serious illnesses or deaths of members of the immediate families; the Cafeteria Committee organized a crew of boys to aid in the cafeteria during each lunch shift to clear the lunch tables; and the Student Council Cabinet selected students most representative of Central to participate on Heart of America Bandstand. A profitable first semester Student Council was the result of many duties performed by the cabinet, representatives, and faculty cooperating together for betterment of the greatest school ever— CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL' First Semester Student Council: From Sympathy Cards to Bandstand BOTTOM ROW: J. The first important event that the Second Semester Student Council was confronted with was that of backing the American Field Service drive to sell enough shares for next year's Foreign Exchange Student. With the aid of Central's present exchange students and others throughout the city, the campaign was a success. Central students were the guests on TV Teentown, February 25, presenting the best show ever. This year, instead of an exchange assembly, it was decided to have a talent assembly. The problem which arose because of the excessive amount of litter found on and around the school's premises was taken over by the Council. The Student Council and officers are to be commended on a job well done for promoting the development and participation of self-government in furthering the unity of the student body. The Central Honor Society was organized for those students with enough ambition and determination to achieve fourteen or more scholarship points for at least two successive semesters. The members of the Central Honor Society are proud to belong to this distinguished organization; but particularly proud are those who can retain the required grade standard every semester of their high school careers. This achievement certainly is one to be proud of! After meeting the requirements for membership a student is allowed to wear the bronze pin. Four semesters of honor status entitle the student to wear the silver pin. Seven semesters of high quality work make a student eligible to wear the coveted gold medal which is pre- sented to the winner at an assembly in the spring planned by the Honor Society's sponsors and officers. A senior who has maintained a 3.10 grade average is graduated with distinction and entitled to add one pearl to his gold medal. Anyone with a 3.50 grade average may add two pearls to his pin and be graduated with high distinction. A person with a 3.65 grade average has reached the top rung of scholastic achievement and is graduated with highest distinction and proudly wears three pearls with his gold medal. The members of the Society exert a good influence on the whole school as they fulfill their pledge to uphold the high ideals of Central and to maintain scholastic standards worthy of their best ability. The first semester proved educational as well as entertaining. From Connie's talks on Guatemala and discussions on other Spanish-speaking countries, a new interest was aroused in their customs and daily life. A Christmas party, Spanish style, was the most successful of all the club's activities. Spanish food and the famed pinata provided education as well as fun. During the second semester the club's attention was turned to the selling of shares, to bring another Foreign Exchange Student to Central. Thespian Club The Thespian Club was organized to inspire young and upcoming talent in the music and speech departments Eligibility for membership is based upon one's ability to do one of four things: sing, dance, act, or play a musical instrument. To retain his membership in the club one must perform at least once a semester before the club. Various activities, including picnics and parties, were enjoyed by the club throughout the year. The purpose of the French Club is To promote better understanding of French and to stimulate interest in it. The programs were designed to fulfill this purpose. Miss Agnes Engel, sponsor, showed slides of France at one meeting. Central's foreign exchange student from Guatemala and Central's exchange students to Germany and France provided other interesting and educational programs. The club carried its interest of French life even to their parties, for at the Christmas party they had eggnog and canape Der deutsche Verein The German Club has had a very enjoyable year, learning about and understanding German customs, culture, and singing songs familiar to the country. A delightful dinner was held in the fall at the home of Ruth Bush. An authentic German menu was served to the pleasure of the members. John Hunkeler, our foreign exchange student, showed interesting and colorful films he took while he was in Germany. This spring the club had a picnic in honor of the seniors. With the expert help of Miss Agnes Engel, the sponsor, the German Club had a very successful and wonderful year. 25 BOTTOM ROW: Ann Rowley, Donna Ashley, Noncy Shull, Sondra Ewald, Mabel Young. In Roman times, the aquiliferi were standard bearers who led the Roman army into battle. Instead of a flag, they each carried a pole with a golden eagle on the top As they upheld Rome's eagle, or standard, Central's Aquiliferi aim to uphold the standards of Central. Chess Club Affectionate friendship, varied by occasional skull-bashing, could be called the current tradition of the Central Chess Club. This year's members sometimes have conducted their meetings like Roman holidays to the alarm of defenseless wayfarers passing room 206; but the spirit of enthusiasm was never lacking. Nonetheless, Chess Club members seriously pride themselves in learning and becoming more proficient in the game of kings. In triumph or defeat members of this year's club learned the skill of better organizing their ideas and plans, through chess strategy. In winning, the victor acquired the feeling of accomplishment which comes with success at this game of mental combat; in losing, his opponent gained proof that there is just reward for superior power of thought, and derived practical knowledge of his own more skillful comebacks in future games. From the beginning of school they ore looking forward to and preparing for it. This contest enables them to match their literary skill against each other. The spirit of competition is always very high, for the winner gains possession of the Williom Powell loving cup for the succeeding year. Very good literary pieces are created. Thus, in many ways, it is the highest point of the year and it brings many benefits. Without Intersociety to spur the clubs on to greater achievements, there would be an immeasurable loss in their foremost aim, literary accomplishment. The Intersociety contests originated in 1886 The spirit of rivalry suggested the holding of annual contests between the High School Debating Society and the Pla-tonian Society. The struggle for superiority continued between these two clubs for many years until the faculty demanded that the Society of Literature and History and the Philo Society be admitted into the competition. The two older clubs refused to comply with the faculty's demand, resulting in the discontinuance of Intersocieties until 1903. From then to the present time all literary societies have been allowed to join in the competition. The events in the original contests consisted of debate, poem, essay, oration, and declamation. Gradually the events underwent changes until they became the present formal, informal, and personal narrative essays, and verse, prepared speech, and declamation entries. Sponsors, appointed by the Principal, aid in drilling the members in the arts of literary composition and verbal expression. At the regular club meetings, a program consisting of the original writings and creations of the members is presented. By means of these exercises the members are given valuoble practice for their work in the Intersocieties. During 1958 the Emersons and Franklins were forced into uniting forces and forming one club because of their inability to acquire enough members. Recently the other societies hove also been faced with the problem of rushing. Rather than dwindle into nothingness, each of the clubs voted February 27, 1959, to disband in a final bloze of glory April 24th. When the shouting and excitement has faded into the distance and the fragments of gayly colored crepe paper have been swept away, so will end another memorable occasion in the lives of hundreds of loyal Centralites—the seventy-second and last annual Central High School Intersociety Contest 38 UPPER LEFT: For deor old C.T.C. we yell, we yell! After the dinner ALS enjoyed a swimming party at Janet Hunt's house. A coke party at the Linwood Y started off the first day of school with a gay note, as the Aristonians danced with the Websters and their rushees. As the school year progressed, a pinning party was held at the Blue Ridge Christian Church. At the beginning of the second semester, the rushees were greeted as new members, having pledged to take the bitter with the sweet. The boys in the Red 'n White started the school year with a rousing get-together at Jackson County Lake with the Aristonains to become acquainted with their rushees. Songs were written early so the old members could teach them to the new after their induction; in order to keep up their tradition of having the sharpest songs in Intersociety. Parties with the Aristonians highlighted the year along with stag parties which were held to get acquainted with the new members. After pledge court, the approaching literary contest took oil of our attention. Events were written and revised. Songs were prac- ticed. Paper was boxed. Clothes were decided upon and proved to be the sharpest ever to be worn by the Central Webster Club. Under the leadership of their sponsor, Mr. Melvin Smith, Earl Evans, Intersociety Representative, and the four term presidents, John Hunkeler, Don Austin, Bob Brouninger, and Don Williams, the Websters completed a very eventful and successful year. A sock hop was held in August at Rock Creek school for the purpose of meeting our rushees On the first day of school, following the morning session. Delphians and Jeffersons attended the annual coke party at the home of Janice Hicks. Stuffed dogs were given to rushees at the slumber party following the Wyandotte game. Finally deciding upon the rushees to be pledged they were given pins to wear at a pinning party at Nadine Lind's. The annual Christmas alumni party was held during the December holidays. Many Jefferson and Delphian alumni attended. More informal was the Thalian-Trojan watermelon feed held for both groups and their rushees. Everyone had a delightful time with the program including a pantomime by four of our more illustrious members. The annual pinning party, held amidst candles, daisies, and smiles from all, marked the pledge of loyalty given by many lovely girls, anticipating membership in the society. In this play there is a hung jury and consequently no plot. Twelve Angry Women is a play which examines the validity of social concepts and attitudes and leaves one with the persuasive feeling that right, given a square deal, can triumph. This year's play cast was fortunate in that Mr. Nance's practice teacher, a graduate student in drama at the University of Kansas City, Miss Carolyn McClure, did the actual directing. Eaglemania Several years having passed without a school-wide talent show, raising money for a low school fund seemed an excellent opportunity for such a grouping of artists. (Mr Bryant thought some of our students might very well find their life careers on Central's stage.) The Fine Arts department assembled their idea makers, script writers, and technicians and the show was off to a good start Their ideas seemed so wild the name of Eaglemania seemed to be o fitting title. Mr David Kirk put pen to hand or hand to pen ; at any rate the school decided he might next year be in Hollywood since their TV show was such a grand success. The theme, if one would call it that, was space men visiting Centrol. The curtain opened with a bang as the two from the aisles bounced onto the stage and then actors strutted their stuff: Idylings of the King, The Gayle Chubb Show, The Gerard Bryant Talent Scout Show, The John Evans' Nightie Night Show, The Hortense Schaller Show, and El Rancho Marshall—a petite can-can show by cur graceful football players, and a ventriloquist! Pep Club Central's full-time, full-of-life cheerleaders directed the cheering, shouting, clapping, and stamping at all of the football and basketball games. The cheerleaders, with Ann Rowley as captain, spent many hours each week during the summer practicing their cheers. All the cheerleaders participated in a cheerleader clinic last summer held in St. Joseph, Missouri. Carol Boyd and Ann Rowley also attended a clinic held at the University of Oklahoma last summer. As a result of all this practice, everyone enjoyed lots of new and really interesting cheers. The 1959 Pep Club got into full swing under the direction of Barbara Beckwith, president, and Miss Jean Pinkerton, faculty sponsor. Wearing their traditional uniforms of Central's blue and white, the members cheered for the victory of our Eagles at both football and basketball games. Through tireless efforts at drills after school, the girls executed maneuvers on the football fields during half time. Besides forming the initials of the opposing school or team, the standard letters formed were C for Central, and E for Eagles. The activities of our Pep Club were staunchly supported by other Cen-tralites, which helped to spur our wonderful football team on to the very superior heights they attained this year by tying for third place in the Interscholastic League OFFICERS BOTTOM ROW: K. The Central High School Unit of the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps was first formed at Central High school in the fall of 1920. The unit has been in continuous operation since that time and over the course of the years has averaged an enrollment of 200 cadets. The battalion was formed during the present school year on the first school day. The initial enrollment in the Corps was 197 cadets. This enrollment grew to 239 during the next two weeks. During ths first semester this figure dwindled, through natural attrition, to approximately 200, where it now remains. In November, Cadet Master Sergeant Twyman Hawkins entered the competition for the position of Sergeant Major of the Corps of Cadets After a series of tests, with a final appearance before a board headed by Mr. Charles Stevenson, Cadet Hawkins was declared the best non-commissioned officer in the Corps of Cadets and appointed to the position of Cadet Sergeant Major for the Corps of Cadets of Kansas City. Foreign Exchange Students Connie, as Consuelo is affectionately called by her classmates, is our third Foreign Exchange Student; the other two being Colette Dubois, from France, ond John Jackson, from England. Twelve Guatemalan students made applications, t i- , examinations, and were interviewed to be accepted for Am icon Field Service. Consuelo was one of the three wF werf selected We ore delighted that she was assigned to Central for she has brought to us the beauty of her country on. i the friendliness of her people Her happy, smiling countenance has been a warm invitation to understanding and good will throughout the school year. Her brochure on Guatemala has been a teaser to all of us to visit the garden-like country to the south of us. I think that being a Foreign Exchange Student is the most wonderful experience of my life, writes Connie. It is wonderful to think that I am my country, since I am representing it I have learned to love it more than I did before ond am proud of it. I also have learned that people are people no matter where I am. That loving ond understanding them makes them love ond understand me. I love the United States, and Kansas City, and Central in particular. I love you all. 72 John Hunkeler, a senior this year, was privileged last summer to be Central's representative in the American Field Service. His appointment was to Berlin, Germany, where he was the American son of Frau Kaethe Bahn ond brother to her two . )tv Jochen, age seventeen, and Vodker, age fifteen, for the summer vacation The goodwill which was evidenced by the Bahn fomily, receiving an American boy in their home, is shown by the fact that Herr Bohn had been killed in o German battle with Americans. John enjoyed the outdoor life of the athletic young Germans in cycling through the forests, swimming in the Hovel River, and hiking through the parks The Berlin problem as it is presented to us in the news is real to John as he had various expeditions into East Berlin to see Communism at work in its devastating effect on East Berliners. John was our second representative to Germany, Tom Schwindt hoving spent the summer of 1957 in Reutlingen, near Stuttgart. Each boy has a new regard for the German thrift and industry and their genuine friendliness. RICHARD B. SMITH JOHN HUNKELER Richard is Central's first Foreign Exchonge Student to spend o semester in a foreign school. He has sufficient control of French that he attended, for the first semester of this school year, the Lycee de Lillebonne as a student in the Seconde Moderne and took the following subjects: French, German, English, algebra, geometry, physics, chemistry, art, and physical education. In addition to his school work he studied organ with Monsieur Marcel Languetuit, titulaire of the great organ at Rouen Cathedral. The family of Monsieur Bost were hosts to Richard, the seventeen-year-old daughter, Brigitte, being a A F.S. Exchange Student to Milwaukee The family, M and Mme. Bost and their son, Jerome, 16, and daughter, Jeanne, 12, lived in a handsome old chateau at Lillebonne. Their life was one of culture and refinement. The chief value, Richard says, of the Service is that is gives people the chance to live and learn together, thus promoting interhuman, and therefore international, understanding. The talks in assembly and in French Club Richard has given have proved his alertness to the interesting customs ond manners of the French and their warm friendliness. 73 BOTTOM ROW: Treosurer, Eorl Evans; Parliamentarian, Tim Fraizer; Giftorian, Donald Austin. Senior Officers When the final strains of Pomp and Circumstance have faded out and graduation is over, the seniors awaken to the realization that we leave, with graduation, many friends and wonderful experiences. But we will hold forever in our hearts and minds memories of Central and friends we made there. Last year, our final project was the designing of our new senior ring. Proudoly we seniors display the new style of our 1958-59 rings. The year was filled with the excitement of planning and fulfilling such activities as football, basketball, track, Pep Club, departmental clubs. Literary Societies, Eaglemania, Spring Play, and Senior Day. Toward the close of our senior year comes the much-awaited-for Senior Prom. This year it was held in the Little Theatre, May 16. A fitting end to our final year of high school is the excitement and inspiration of our night—graduation. This is the night we will remember always—we, the Seniors of 1958-59. 74 H A y , U o ji most “Popular Earl Evans- Nancy Schull fS9j m 'Va CoCIAlFUII and'BEAU f H most likely +o succeed best dance-rs 3onc|ra EwaW-David Kniff in Wally Chslwan- Carol Boyd n oollv eoov ÂŁs I r ', Pennis _ 'Barbara y Xv jf j Hu (Son Ifeckvf’rth I r .-, Ni- %4f ' “ 2rL A !• Fl Powley Hunbeler ÂŁT ACIOX S '' best musicians' actress i Richard Cmifh Jeanne Zmek Fe+ Fe+erson- Deanna Snowden TOP ROW ROBERT AINSWORTH 'Centrol Webster Club ; Chairman Student Council; Red Cross; Football. J. DeLano School. Peace and contentment abound in the surroundings. The subjects and high school credits are on the same level as in the regular school system In Industrial Arts a boy can learn to use the material and tools that may some day make it possible for him to master a trade or profession in the business world. In Home Economics the girls acquire the skills necessary to establish and maintain their own homes in the future DeLano is quite active in scouting It has a Cub Pack and Girls' and Boys' Scout Troops. The scouting program is sponsored by the Heart of America Legion, Post No. 135. DeLano is one of the schools selected to present the Babe Ruth Sportsmanship Award to two of its high school students each year. The whole purpose of the faculty at DeLano is to train the student to be physically and mentally capable of holding down his own position in life and to give him the satisfaction of carrying the load on his own shoulders. These are a few of the reasons why naught but happiness and contentment dwell within these portals. R. J. DeLano Tower R. J. Junior Class Officers The Junior Class has carried on the fine traditions of Central in an admirable way: choosing their class ring, helping with the Junior-Senior Prom, and perfecting their class organization. Russell Funk will be our representative in the summer program of the American Field Service, going as a Foreign Exchange Student to some European country yet to be determined Harold Boehm, Margaret Fields, Claudia Shepard, ond Janet Sturgess are the first in Central to be candidates for the National Council of English Scholars. The class bids fair to be one of the strongest senior classes we have had for several years, 65 of them making 90 or better on the S C A T, on College Ability tests; seventy are members of the Central Honor Society 92 Now What Did She Say H2O Was?
