EDUCATION Central is indeed fortunate in having as its new Princi- pal, Mr. W. W. Clement, who is recognized as one of the outstanding school adminis- trators of Kansas City. Those of us who have come in con- tact with Mr. Clement this year, respect and admire him. We extend to him the warmest of greetings and wish for him tlie best of suc- cess at Central in the years to conre. Mr. Win. En( lund. Vice-Principal FACULTY V. ir. CU ' iut ' nl. Princi nil The recently published report of the Plarvard Commit- tee on The Objectives of a General Education in a Free Society contains a significant section on Heritage and Change. Central High School should be peculiarly con- cerned with the importance of these elements in its program of progress. In continuous existence through the seventy years during which high school attendance throughout the United States has grown from 80,(100 to upwards of 7.( 0().()()0. our high school has its roots in a sjdendid heritage, of which we are deeply conscious and justly proud. From this heritage we must constantly draw ins])iration. l ut whereas in our school ' s beginnings the goal of all was college entrance, today not more than one in five of high school graduates enter college. It is hoped that as the Class of 46 leave our halls they will find that their high school experience will prove to have been, in the language of the report, as fair to the fast as to the slow, to the hand-minded as to the book- minded, and while meeting the separate needs of each, this exi)erience will have fostered that fellow feeling between human being and human i)eing which is the deepest root of democracv. ■p % j - ■ ' ' 15 Top Jiow—yiWdvL ' d Abel, Nciaii Alexaiidcr, Helen {;oukl Allison, lii-ryl Alton, Maljcl Heattic, Ben U. Among those pictures, one will recognize the faces of people who have won success in many lines of work since their graduation. Now, the Class of 194B is about ready to join the thousands who have graduated before you. Your teachers wonder what the future holds for each of you. That future lies largely in your hands. We have tried to give you training, attitudes, and ideals to help you. We count on your bringing credit both to yourselves and to Central. We will miss you. and our best wishes will always go with you. Viu. liniiliin ' L uc-Principal Top Row — Mildred E. Keating, Kerniit Keller, I la Mautle Kite. In that position he served longer than any of his predecessors, rounding out a full quarter of a century, and giving it the most fruitful years of his life. Of himself and his talents he gave freely and copiously — to his associates, to the students and jiations of Central. Withal, his family, church, and civic interests did not lag, nor were his recreational needs and desires neglected. Max the (iivcr of all Good Gifts grant him many more years of good health, service, and happiness! Mr. O. F. Duhccli MR. DAVIS Mr. Richard 0. Davis was horn and reared in Kentucky. Following his graduation from the University of Kentucky, where he majored in history and languages, he taught in Good Xighl College, Good Xight, Texas, for two years lie- fore coming to Kansas City, and at Manual High School before he came to Central in 1917. Mr. Davis is a prodigious reader, greatly interested in present-day economic and political ])roblems, and is active in church work. On their return from an extensive trip through the West, he and Mrs. I avis plan to spend their time at the family home in Merriam, Kansas, where he raises beautiful Dowers for a hobby. MISS WESTERFIELD Miss Westerfield came to Central in 1921 and has taught Social Science to many classes since thai time. The inter- est of her students was shown in their organization of the Social Science Society, which brought many outstanding local speakers to their meetings. Her active interest in the Woman ' s Dining Club, of which she is a past president, lier plans for some travel soon, her love of reading, llowers and music, will enable her lo continue the rich life of her davs at Central. MISS WHITNEY After graduating from Central, Miss Wiiitney spent four years in Germany continuing her musical education. She made appearances in all sections of the country as a concert violinist, returning to Central to teach music. Many nationally and locally known singers received early instruction and inspiration from her. She is at present studying Russian, which adds one more to the many languages in which she is proficient. MISS WYNNE Miss Wynne moved from her native Atlanta, Georgia, in time to graduate as salutatorian of her class at Central. The last twenty-five years she taught Latin in Central, making occasional sallies into the tields of English, German and Spanish. She now has time to enjoy her home, play her piano, read her favoi ' ite essays and whodunits in German. French, Spanish, Italian and Russian, and to attend ball games! To these former teachers of Central, the students and faculty wish to express our sincere appreciation for their service to our school. We are sure that they have made real contributions toward a better way of life and thought for all of us with whom thev have come in contact. ' i-4 i « _ Mr. R. 0. Davis Miss Murie B. They boasted an ever-lighting, hard-driving bunch of clean foot- ball-minded bovs. Their record, although not per- fect, takes its phice among the other outstanding teams in Central ' s past. The close of the season found Central in third place with five games won against two lost. Five lettermen returned from the previous year, four of whom were regulars. Although this was a very potent fact, the squad was greatly weakened by the loss of Jasper lari- no, returning lelterman. due to a serious knee injury received during the preceding summer. In the first game of the season, the Rhie Eagles crossed the state line to Kansas to pla their old rival, the Wyantlotle Bulldogs, in a nonleague opener. The game ended in a (i to 6 deadlock, with Central ' s Joe Sendjler tallying the touclulown for Central from the 1-foot line and Vilson scoring for Vyandotte. Central opened the interscholastie league vith a rousing 21 to victory over the Paseo Pirates. Featuring three touchdown passes from the talented arm of Johnny Willingham to the versatile Hank Menze, the Eagles dis- played po er through the air that threw fear into die other league contenders. Following the Paseo Pirates, came the Westport Tigers, who gave tlie fans one of the finest games of the season. The field was water soaked to such an extent that the lilue and Wliite ' s air power was virtually powerless. It was a seesaw battle throughout the entire game with many fine runs hy the signal-calling quarterback of Cen- tral, Bob Owens. With less than lour minutes to play, I enton )f Westport went over for a tally. The conversicni failed and Westport led ti to 0. Central fans became dis- couraged and began to leave. After returning the kiek-olf to our own U-yarti marker, .h hn Willingham came through with a Ki-yard jjass to Mcnze, who knocked it in the air, ran on to it, and tore forty yeards to pay-dirt, lienny Webster ' s golden toe saved the day for Central as the game ended Central 7, Westport (i. The following week the Eagles and the Northeast Vikings fought it out for first place. The Vikings opened up with a surge of power that pushed them ahead at the half 7 to with Minnick doing the damage for Northeast. In the second half. Central received the kick-ofl ; Delvin Norris, Viking end, intercepted a Central pass and ran twenty yards to score. Behind 13 to 0, Central took to the air with Willingham and Owens tossing and Menze, Wilheit, and Pascutti receiving. Pascutti scored early in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard pass from Willingham, and with Webster ' s conversion the score stood 13 to . Later in the fourth period the Eagles drove for another touchdown. Owens tossed a 15-yard pass to Willingham, who lateraled to Pascutti, who ran thirty yards, where he was stopped by a lucky shoestring tackle on the 5-yard marker. Here the breaks turned against Central. A five-yard penalty was called; three fumbles, two of which were fumbled over the goal line, followed. This gave the Vikings possession of the ball, and they kicked out of danger. With only a niinute remaining. Central tried desperately to score again but was caught behind its own goal, giving Northeast a safety and two points. Northeast 15, Central 7. Seeking revenge, the Eagles then took on the Southwest Indians and easily downed them lit to li. Bill Schwarz, end, set up the first touchdown by recovering a Southwest fumble early in the first period. On a scries of running plays, Owens took it over from the G-inch line. Webster ' s kick was good and the score stood 7 to 0. The second and third period found the ball in midfield most of the time. In the fourth quarter, however, the Eagles loosed their power and scored two touchdow ns with Webster scoring from the 1-foot line and Menze scoring on a neat pass from Willingham. Southwest nuide a bid to score on a long pass but was stopped on the 2-yard marker as the gun sounded, endiiig tlie game witii Central 19 and South- west (I. The second defeat of the season for the Blue and White was dealt out by the powerful Southeast Knights, The Knights scored early in the first quarter when Bill Snyder romped over from the five-yard line. Central came bounc- ing back with the now famous passing combination ( Mllinghani to Menze plus Webster ' s educated toe) and netted 7 points, tying the score. Dale Leathers of South- east, on the first play after the kick-olT, broke away for sixty-three yards and seven nu)re points. Southe-ast again scored late in the third period from the l- ard line after recovering a Central fumble. The final score of the game came when Willingham uncoikcd another pass to Menze in the end zone. The game enihd ith the Knights liolding the Eagles on the 1-foot line with the score standing 21 to 11! in favor of Southeast. The fcdlowing week Central downed the Crimson of Manual by the convincing score of IM to n. Willingham opened the scoring spree in tin secontl period with a fort - ard run to score. Webster kicke l the first of his three conversions for the seventh point. N ' itli three minutes remaining in the first half, Owens interceiUed a Manual pass and carried it to the Manual 25. He then threw a 7- yard pass to ' illingham, who maneuvered Ijeautifully for the remaining IS yards to score. In the third period, Owens again hit Willingham with a In and a ID-yard pass that broke Willingnam away for his third louch- dow n. In the fourth period w ith Central deep in Manual territor . About a dozen boys answered the call in Sep- tember, and Jerry McDaniel, Charles Phillips, Donald Coleman, LeRoy McCracken and Marvin FrumhofT were selected to represent Central in the Interscholastic Meet. Marvin FrumhofT lost the first round singles to Norman Apple of Southwest, who went undefeated through the meet to win the championship.
