Many of Central ' s (J alumni have fought and died for their country. M , The circus theme of the Centralian might seem inappro- priate to many people in such times as these, but we were trying to get away from the war theme to something more ful when we chose it. In any event, we, the staff, hope you will like this book and cherish it for many years. His understanding of human nature, his genuine interest in people and their problems, his friend- liness and kindliness with young and old, have endeared him not only to us, but to thousands of others who are scattered over the world today. But. of course, all good things must come to an end, for there is an exception to every rule. After graduating from Central in 1945, three of the boys, Bill Skinner, Jim Zerr and Harvey Wilson, chose the occupation of their heart ' s desire and joined the circus. Being hard-working boys, and also good at strip poker, they were soon the owners. They renamed it the Blue Top, and it soon became a world-famous outdoor circus. Now. with ultimate victory a probability, we need to be reminded that wars do not settle the problems that brought them on. For example, it was Missouri ' s own Champ Clark who forty years after the Civil War said, The Civil War did not settle the Negro problem. II created it. Eighty years after that war we are still search- ing for a solution. The postwar period ahead is a vital one for you. You cannot become loo familiar with the life and the history of all the peoples of the world. You need all the education you can possibly get. My hope for each is thai you will measure up to the abilities and the opportuni- ties which are yours. Then you can really share in- telligently in the discussion of the tremendous world issues we older folk unfortunately are bequeathing to you, because we haven ' t been as smart as we hope you will be. In this new phase of your lives, you will be more dependent upon yourselves than ever before. Keep in mind that you have not finished your education, and that you will never be able to do so. Each day you will be confronted with new problems and new situations. Most of the facts you have learned in high school will soon be forgotten, but if you have learned the art of study and have acquired the desire for learning, you are indeed fortunate because these are the chief characteristics of an educated person. However, this team was not surpassed in lighting spirit, cooperation, and willing teamwork. The ' 44 gridiron squad, handicapped by inexperience and size, finished in a tie for fifth place with Southwest. Coach Harry Slaymaker had five returning letter men, only one of them having been a regular from the ' 43 squad. The rest of the positions were filled by boys from last year ' s second team. The Blue Eagles started their season by defeating the Wyan- dotte Bulldogs 6 to 0. The score came in the closing minutes of the first half, when a pass from Jennings to Adams was carried over for the only touchdown of the game. The following week, the Blue Eagles were dealt their first defeat when the powerful Ward Cyclones pushed across two last-half touchdowns to win by the score of 12 to 0. The next week, league play began when the fast-stepping East Bears, with tricky and deceptive offensive, finally broke through the Eagles ' defense to score two touchdowns and defeat Central 12 to 0. A week later the Blue and White was upset by a highly im- proved Paseo squad. Central scored in the first two minutes of play after a Pirate punt was blocked, after which John Willing- ham plowed through the line to score. However, the Pirates came back with a strong passing attack which netted them two touchdowns and the game, the final score being 12 to 6. Following the Paseo game, our team met the powerful and highly vaunted Northeast Vikings, defending champions from last year. Both teams battled furiously, neither being able to penetrate very deeply in the other ' s ' territory. It became a battle of the line with backs being held for short gains. The second half began in the same fashion. However, late in the third period the Vikings began cracking the tired but coura- geous Eagle line. They succeeded in striking pay dirt when John Glorioso bulled his way over from the two-yard line to score the only touchdown of the game. Thus the game ended with Northeast ahead G to 0. The next Eagle foe was the Westport Tigers. Central gained a six-point lead when Bob Jennings broke off tackle and scooted thirty yards for a touchdown. This lead held until the final quarter, when the Tigers opened up with tricky pass- ing and powerful line thrusts, and Nick Can-as finally rammed over for a touchdown to tie the ball game at 6 all. That ended the scoring and the game with the final result — Central 6 and Westport 6. Playing their first day game of the season, the Eagles were faced by the Southwest Indians. The first half was a see-saw battle, with neither team being able to gain much headway due to the fact that the iield was muddy ' . However, after the start of the last half, the Eagles ' offensive began to roll. The climax came when, from the Southwest 28-yard line, John YVillingham twisted his way through to reach touchdown land and score the only counter of the game. The conversion was scored on a pass from Adams to Jen- nings. The rest of the game found the Eagles on the offense, with Howard and Marino doing most of the running. The game ended with the Eagles ahead 7 to and driving for another touchdown. The final game of the season brought together Central and South- east. This was a very important game, for if the Knights won they would share the title, while if they lost they would drop to third place. Things looked bright for the Eagles when on the first play of the game Bud Finnell slipped off tackle and raced fifty yards down the side, only to be smeared on the ten-yard line. There the Knight line held and the Eagles were forced to give the ball up on clowns. The Knights then punted out of danger, after which both teams battled between the forty- yard lines, neither team being able to gain much headway. Late in the third quarter a drive, headed by Grega and Finnell, carried to the ten-yard line, where once again the Knights ' defense held and the Eagles were forced to surrender the ball. The result of the game was dcided when, with only three minutes left to play, a Southeast quick- kick was fumbled by an Eagle player and rolled in the end zone, there to be recovered by the Eagles, preventing a touchdown, but costing the Eagles two points and the game. The final score hung Southeast 2 — Central 0. Thus ended the football season for the Eagles in the year 1944. The end of the season brought honor to Central High School when Ike Adams and Joe Sembler were named in the All-City Eleven, with Bob Jennings receiving an honorable mention rating. At an award assembly in the school audi- torium. Coach Harry Slaymaker presented twenty boys with first team letters. Ike Adams and Bryce Mehrens were elected co- captains of the squad by their teammates. MR. FORBES Not much is knowTi of the hard work which Mr. Forbes does in connection with his job as athletic manager. This year marks the eighth year Mr. Forbes has handled the financial end of athletics, tak- ing over the reins from Mr. Talmadge in 1938. Since taking over, Mr. Forbes has added several features to the activity ticket and yet kept the price reasonable. We wish to contribute these few words in recognition of our appreciation for the fine work he has done and will continue to do in the future. Coach H. S. Slaymaker Assistant Coach Clifford D. Although our team this year was not a champion in the league, it was in spirit. The three returning lettcrmen constituting the nucleus of the Eagle quintet this year were Hod Adams, Bill Wilson and Vince Henderson. Opening the season against the De LaSalle Cadets, the Eagles ' pow- erful team bounced the Cadets 42 to 29, and came back again the next week to defeat a hard-lighting Lillis High five by a 44 to 22 count. The same week, the Blue Eagles en- countered the Wyandotte Bulldogs. A scoring spree, headed by Bill Wilson, in the final quarter enabled Central to gain a 35 to 31 victory. Coasting through a 36 to 15 victory over Hogan High, the Eagles then journeyed to Independence to nose out William Chrisman by the close score of 30 to 28. With the beginning of league play, the Blue Eagles downed the East Bears 32 to 29. Holm led the scoring with 14 points. The Eagles ' seventh victory in a row was registered when they edged out the Southeast Knights by a 29 to 28 score. The battling Eagles ' first loss was registered when the Southwest Indians downed them by the score of 37 to 28. The Blue Eagles bounced back the next week by defeating the Pasco Pirates 25 to 17. The Eagles next journeyed to Kansas to encounter the Ward Cyclones. The taller Cyclones triumphed by the score of 45 to 23. Defeat struck the Eagles again when the Manual Crimsons staged an uphill battle to upset them by a 43 to 42 score. In another close game, the Eagles edged out a constantly bat- tling Westport team 23 to 22. The final game of the season brought together the Eagles and the Northeast Vikings. The Vikings defeated the Eagles 29 to 27. The Eagles were recognized by having Ike Adams, Bob Holm and Roger Adams placed on the city ' s honorable mention list. How- ever, in the Eagles ' first dual meet, they showed fine pros- pects by defeating Southeast, and should prove a strong contender for the championship in the city and state meets. This year ' s Eagle track squad is built around last year ' s five lettermen, Bill Best, Don Fitzhugh, Jim Howard, Bob Merrill and Hank Menze. These boys have already proved themselves by winning or placing in their events. Other fellows who proved themselves good enough in the interclass meet to represent Central this year are Bill Comer, Jim Hartley, John Willingham and Jasper Marino. In the coming city meet that will be held at Southwest this spring, Central will be well represented in every event. The boys who will probably compete in the city meet are: High hurdles, Jim Howard and John Willingham; 100- and 200-yard dashes, Bill Best and Bill Comer; low hurdles, Don Fitzhugh and Jim Howard; 440-yard dash, Bob Merrill, Hank Menze and Bob Owens; 880-yard run, Alan Shields and Jack Dice; high jump, Jim Howard and John Willingham; broad jump, Bill Comer and John Wil- lingham; shot-put, Jasper Marino and Joe Sembler; pole vault, Bob Stroup and Jim Hartley. Bill Best is a heavy favorite to win both the 100- and 220-yard dashes, as he has turned in the best times so far. Bill Comer is favored to place either second or third in both of these events, with a possibility of scoring in the broad jump. Jim Howard, Central ' s ace high jumper, may win the high jump, as he has cleared the bar at 5 ' 9 . Although Bob Burgard of East has beaten Shields, Cen- tral ' s half-mile ace, this event is expected to be a very close race, for Shields has turned in some good times. Central ' s chances for winning the city championship are as good as those of any other school, but as we have had only one dual meet, no one can forecast too well the results. However, the Eagles ' squad will be constantly working to produce a winning team, and we want to wish these boys the best of luck in their efforts to win the city championship. H In the annual fall tournament, Central High School was repre- sented by five returning letter men from last year ' s team. These were Captain Bill Skinner. Warren Jones, Bob Weatherholt, Francis Darr and Alan Shields, all of whom are seniors. The tournament was held at Swope Park Number Two golf course. It was played oil ' in a series of four rounds, each round consist- ing of IS boles. The 72-hole tourna- ment lasted four days. When the team scores were compiled, it was found that Southeast had first place; Southwest, second: Central, third: Paseo. fourth, anil Westport, last place. Leading the indvidual scores for the tournament was Jim Neuner of Southwest with an average of 70. The leading Eagle golfer was Alan Shields with an average of 78. Shields ranked fourth in the tourna- ment, closely followed by Bill Skin- ner and Warren Jones, both averag- ing 79. With the coming of spring the boys are out sharpening up on their games for the spring tournament. Coach B. B. Jaben was the number one sngles man. Harry Friedman, num- ber two singles man, lost out in early competition to Capman of Paseo. The Eagles ' number one doubles team, composed of Cecil Schaffer and Francs Darr, was defeated by Leiter and Titus of Southwest in the second round. Leiter and Titus later became the doubles champions of the city. The number two Cen- tral team, consisting of Dan Gep- ford and Bill Best, fell before Apple and Phelps of Southwest. The teams finished in this order: Southwest, first place; Central, sec- ond; Paseo, third; and Southeast, fourth. Coach Nolan Alexander is expect- ing better results in the spring tour- nament. Hockey, basketball, volleyball and intramural sports got off with a good start, due to the co- operation of the managers. Playdays came and went with victories and losses alike. The teams were successful at times, and when it came to losses they did not give up. Miss Purnell, Miss Jones and Miss Hart were not only fine instructors, but they encouraged the girls to work hard toward their goal. Sergeant Carl Spikes was given a medical discharge from the army, and the place of the sergeant instructor was left vacant. Sergeant Carl Hoffman was at Central for two weeks, but just as the battalion was getting started again, he was trans- ferred to Southeast High. All cadets were sincerely hoping that the third time would hold some charm, anil fortunately it did. Again Central ' s faculty welcomed a new R. 0. T. C. in- structor. Sergeant Neal A. Dan Gepford stepped up the rungs of the lad- der of rank, to lead the battalion as its cadet major. He was ably assisted by the adjutant, Cadet Captain John Putnam, and by the other officers. Cadet Captain Kraft was the Battalion Plans and Training Officer. The job of Supply Olherr was nicely bandied by Cadet Lieutenant Charles Hauer and later by Cadet Lieutenant Bill Hen- derson, when the former graduated at midyear. The Second Lieutenants: A, Herbert Mynatt: B, Donald Louk; C. Jack Duckworth; D, Harold Buschmeyei . Central had one of the top-ranking rifle teams in the city, as shown when they repeated the vic- tory of last year. The team was again awarded the third place cup by Lieutenant Colonel E. W. Bondy, the Professor of Military Science and Tactics of the Kansas City Regiment. The award was made in a special assembly, at which med- als and ribbons were presented to the highest scoring members of the team. The medals were presented to Lloyd Briggs, Kenneth Harris, John Putnam, Carl Erickson, Neal Stuessi and Joe Vogel, the six highest marksmen. The ribbons for firing an average of 100 or better for the year were given to John Putnam, Carl Erickson and Neal Stuessi. Joe Vogel received a star for the ribbon he received last year. John Putnam was the captain of the Rifle Team. The battalion took an active part in the Variety Night Show and Field Day. Many cadets enjoyed the annual R. O. T. C. Hop on March 24th. All inspections were passed with (lying colors, including one by Captain Carl Wince, who re- placed Captain Little as the Assistant P. M. S. and T. So another profitable year of R. O. T. Through the Sabers, Jody Van Valkenburgh and Francis Uarr. On Saturday, March 24, the Central R. 0. T. C. battalion held its twentieth annual military ball, more commonly referred to as the hop. Each year a queen of the ball and her two aides are chosen by the lucky cadets who attend. The queen for the year of 1945 was Miss Joanne Van Valkenburgh. She was escorted by Lieutenant Francis Darr. The aides were Miss Shirley White, escorted by Sergeant Norman Peterson, and Miss Norma Montgomery, escorted by Sergeant Karl Kenyon. Nearly one hundred couples attended the dance. For many, it was their first formal dance, but all cadets and 102 dates enjoyed a wonderful evening. The dancing was to the music of Dutch Holland ' s five-piece band, with Don Robinson, a student at Central High, glorifying the saxo- phone. This was the second consecutive year for Central ' s cadets to click their heels to the music of Dutch Holland ' s musicmakers. The scene of the joyous occasion, the girls ' gymnasium at Central, was so beautifully decorated as to be wholly unrecognizable as a gym. Everything went perfectly from the grand march to the last dance, and a good time was had by all.
