In this, the 1944 Centralian, we have attempted to por- tray your school as it is reflected in the headlines — as each day sees another link forged in the chain of events that makes a high school in a world at war. In a nation armed and fighting for her creeds, her way of life, school assumes a new and en- tirely different significance. Here among us are born the hopes, the inspirations of tomorrow, and from her oftentimes go the soldiers of today. To the values that call for courage and sacrifice, to the American spirit as represented in and around Central, this book is dedicated. j [4 - ' r abU a£ Gositeatd, Seniors 11 Faculty 27 Home Rooms 31 R. In 1924, when the English curriculum was reorganized, he took over extra work in connection with the library phase. Aside from his duties in the English department, he was coach for the tennis and baseball teams. In 1921 Mr. E. A. Harley came to Central to establish the first print shop in Kansas City ' s public schools. Formerly, he had his own shop in the city ' s business district. His school print shop was outstanding, and since its beginning print shops have been added to many other schools in the system. He also edited and published the Graphic Arts Magazine, sponsored by the Graphic Art Club, which he organized. Mr. F. J. Kirker, who in 1908 came to Central to initiate commercial subjects into the school ' s course of studies, became a member of the teaching staff at Junior College in 1915. Before the war he organized teachers through- out the country to travel to the West and Canada to take study courses at different colleges and universities in these regions. In the fall of 1940 he returned to Central for part-time teaching. Miss Dora Pyle came from Manual Training High in 1918 to teach mathematics at Central. Having a great fondness for new sights and scenery, she spent a year in traveling about the world. During this time she spent a great deal of time in China with her sister, who was in charge of a girls ' school there. With the exception of this one year spent in traveling, she wholeheartedly gave her time and energy to the teaching of Central students. .Mr. E. E. Rush was added to the list of faculty names when he came in 1896 to teach history and civics. For 20 years he was chairman of the social science studies and also actively engaged fur many years as a lecturer in the Kansas City School of Law. Mr. T. E. Talmadge came to Central from a special school in 1909 to assist in commercial work which had recently been added to the school ' s study curriculum. He trained many Central students for office v rk and for many years had charge of finances pertaining to the school ' s extra-curriculum activities. On behalf of tin- student body and the faculty, the Centralian staff extends to these former teachers of Central High School a dee]) appreciation of their accomplishments and helpful con- tributions toward a higher standard of living for future Americans in a democratic society. f 28 ft ' l ... |f W w v ' fe bf 1 1 _jgff ' :■■f f l TO ±S •4 a e KoatfU Jk osne Hoojni 420, 303, IS, 207w., 409, 419, 411, 24, 32 and 403 MR. That was the year of headlines, some full of solemnity and sober thought; others with fun, hilarity. Yes, the outside world seemed so unstable, but here in Central our own small world kept right on moving much the same, with only a faster tempo marking the changing times. A check in September showed an enrollment of 1 .658. Once more, Central was alive with students — frightened sophomores, the forgotten man (otherwise known as the juniors), and the dignified and world-weary seniors. The usual hectic fall rush began as the gridiron season opened. Cheered on by the lusty yells of the spectators and spirited marches and drills of the band, the Eagles clashed with other schools for top place in the League. Soon enough there came December, bringing with it Variety Night. Mid-year grades were the most important things for a while. Pledge day brought new talent and material for all lit societies, and rough and rocky was the following week. (Just ask any ple.dge!) Spring arrived and with it came Pride and Prejudice, the Hop. Intersociety, spring fever, and the return of some re-e-eely sharp name bands to the com- monly acknowledged local stamping grounds, the Auditorium. Seniors have held final class meetings and sent their invitations. Now everyone is caught in the mad whirl of signing parties and the grind of finals. Those of us who leave Central this spring hav e all the regrets of other seniors, no more pepsi dates at the Friendly ' s, no assemblies, elections, honors. But with our world at war, careers and other future plans are much more significant. With a high school background, girl and boy graduates alike are going out to fight for liberty and freedom in a shattered universe. What headline of 1944 could be more important ? C. battalion marched through one of its most vigor- ous and successful years. Due to a particularly large increase in the number of cadets, five companies were first formed instead of the usual four. However, owing to the mid-year graduation it became necessary to dis- solve the fifth and redistribute its mem- bers among the remaining. The battalion staff consisted this year of commander. Cadet Major Ralph Bur- bridge, ably assisted by the battalion ad- jutant. Cadet Captain Charles McGinnis, and the sergeant major, Robert Lloyd Cadet Captains Robert Faulk. Leo French, Jack McGovney and Roland Rhodes held the positions of commanders of . B, C and D companies, respectively. while Cadet First Lieutenants Lawrence Botkin and Frank Scott and Second Lieutenants William Baker, Lloyd Hader, Richard Hartzler, Jack Hartman. John Jacobson, Robert Leininger and Thomas Orth competently completed tie staff of officers. In the way of achievements, one of the most important events of the year was the winning of third place in the Intercity Match by the Blue Eagle rifle team. The cup was personally presented to the group by Lt. Colonel Bondv, P. M. S. T„ in a special R. 0. t. C. assembly. Aside from this, each team member was awarded a medal and thost whose score was sufficiently high re- ceived special qualification ribbons. Cap- tained by Cadet Robert Faulk, the team consisted of Cadets Lawrence Botkin. Michael Calcara. Albert Gumminger, Jack McGovney and Joseph Vogel. A gnat deal of stress lias been placed on rifle marksmanship this year. In addi- tion to his regular theoretical work, every cadet was required to pass the practical exercises, including the sight- ing bar. sling adjustments and positions. s a final test, all were required to fire on the range. Quite an amount of excitement wa- caused by the long rumored and anxious- ly awaited arrival of Lee-Enfield rifles, which had come to replace the wooden victory rifle, hastily adopted when the Spring-fields, with which the battalion had been equipped, were called back by the army. In anticipation of their com- ing, a storehouse had been especially built. Though the cadets of Central view R. O. T. C. seriously, their life is not en- tirely devoid of humor. For the first time the battalion invaded the school ' s regular Variety Night production, turning out to be the hit of the show in their adapta- tion of a scene from the currently popu- lar satire on army life, See Here, Pri- vate Hargrove. It was evident that Captain Bob Faulk showed a natural talent in his characterization of the gold- bricking army misfit, Hargrove. Others in the cast included Cadets Lawrence Botkin. Donald Haley, Robert Leinin- ger, Charles McGinnis. Jack McGovney, David Miller and Frank Scott. Though the annual R. O. T. C. Circus had to be given up as a wartime meas- ure, the battalion held its customary hop, and though faced with a great many restrictions, it was a huge success. fs TOP ROW: J. Hartman, B. Lanager, L. Admired for her ability, loved for her sincerity of heart, Helen made wide friend- ships, as her many scholastic honors attest. [50 1 SpatiU oottedl Coach H. S. Slaymaker Assistant Coach Clifford D. Cornelius Sparked with five returning lettermen, the Centra] Blue Eagles were strong contenders for the [nterscholastic League crown. Thej won six games, lost one, and tied one, to finish half a game nut of first place. In the first same of the season Central de- feated her old rival. Wyandotte, for the first time in eight years. Bill Sidebotham, Eagle full back, scored the only touchdown of the game, to give ( entral a 6 to a ictory. Previous seasons found that night games at- tracted larger crowds; therefore the high school teams were granted the privilege of playing at Ruppert Stadium. This not only made it better for the players, but it also made an ideal situation for the spectators, as they bad good seats and a well- lighted held. The first league same of the season. Central met the Northeast Vikings and went down in defeat at the bands of this powerful team. Nine lettermen and a faster squad which had had much more experience were responsible for Central ' s only li s of the season. While Central was held scoreless, Northeast pushed over for 13 points. This game proved to be the one that kept Central from winning the championship. The next week the Blue Eagles came back fight- ing, determined to push over the Paseo Pirates. With Central ' s line line holding the Pirates score- less, and the hard running of Central ' s backfield, the Blue Eagles scuttled the Pirates to win 14 to 0. Then Central went on to tare and defeat the Southwest Indians by a score of 19 to 6, to avenge last year ' s defeat by the Indians. On Cen- tral ' s first play, Sidebotham went 45 yards for the I ' due Eagles ' first tally. Later in the game he received a punt and galloped 92 yards behind fine blocking for a touchdown, registering one of the longest runs of the season. Continuing in a win column, the Eagles went on to defeat a hard-fighting Westport team by the close margin of l.i to 1- ' . Passes played an im- portant part in this game, and both teams com- pleted many. It was in this game that Westport introduced its spread formation, which baffled the Line Kagles and gave them plenty of trouble. The following week Central journeyed to Kan- sas to face the high-scoring Ward Cyclones. Bat- tling hard throughout the entire game, neither team could be sure of a victory until the final gun, for it was in the closing minutes that Central came up and knotted the score 19 all. The combined bard running and driving of Prudden and Side- botham enabled the Blue Eagles to match the Cyclones, touchdown for touchdown. On a 14 to count, Central ' s Blue Eagles de- feated the Southeast Knights. It was the fourth victory in a row for the Kingbirds. With Central ' s line playing a fine defensive game, the Knights were unable to score throughout the entire game, and never came within 20 yards of pushing one over. All the scoring was done during the first half, the last half becoming a see- saw battle, with both lines holding marvelously. Central ' s final victory enabled them to capture sec- ond place, only half a game behind the champions, Northeast. Had Northeast lost one game instead of tying it, Central would have tied for the championship. At the close of the season. Bill Sidebotham, fullback, and Kill Haynie, tackle, were honored to be named on the All-Star Team for the second consecutive year. Also named to the All-Star Team was Al Wilcox, Cen- tral ' s center. Tf L a good account of themselves in the League and non-League games With only two returning lettermen, Scofield and Prudden, Central ' s chances of winning the championship were slim. But they were determined to give every team a battle. Opening the season against the De LaSalle Cadets, the Blue Eagles proved their fighting spirit by matching the favored Cadets, basket for basket, but lost the game by the slim margin of one point, 27 to 16 Scofield and Storer paced the Blue Eagles with 10 and 8 points, respectively. The following night the Blue Eagles met the Lillis Cagers on the Catholic League champions court The entire game was in the Eagles favor, and they were the only team in Kansas City to defeat the Lillis five this year. The final score of the game was 27 to 16 in favor of Central. A week later, the Blue Eagles invaded Kansas territory to meet the strong Buildups from Wyandotte. 1 he Kansans lost no time in forging ahead of Central, and their great defense held Central to only nine points throughout the game, while they pumped in 30. The following week, Central returned to its own court, there to he faced by the William Chnsman boys from Independence. The boys played hard and fast and were paced by Bob Hemenway, who dropped in 13 points to enable the Blue Eagles to defeat Chnsman 33 to 22. The Interscholastic League started but due to the Big War Bond Drive that was being held at the Municipal Auditorium, the first two rounds of gain,- were played at the Mason Halpin Field House at Rockhurst. The first foe for Central was Northeast. The Northeast Vikings took the lead, and Central. s Bkl „ e „ Eagles could never quite overtake them, although they came close many times. The games ended with the Vikings on the big end of a 21 to 17 score However Northeast later forfeited the game due to a technicality pertaining to one ot their players. In the second league game of the season, the Blue Eagles met the small but fast East High School team. It was a nip and tuck battle all the way, with the Bears edging out the Blue Eagles in the final minutes of play. The final score: East 28. Central 21. Next , facing the Crimson five from Manual, the Eagles found in them an opponent with deadly accuracy and ball handling ability. They fought hard all the way but could not overcome the Iron Men, who played championship ball. The score: Manual 43, Central 31. Next on the docket were the Westport Tigers. It was a hard fought game, but Westport s superior height was too much for the Blue Eagles, as they were defeated by the tigers to the tune of 33 to 23. By beating the Southeast Knights the next week, the Blue and White won their first League game other than their forfeited victory over Northeast. Playing hard and last Central quickly built up a lead and maintained it throughout the entire game to down the Knights 40 to 35. Once again the Blue Eagles invaded Kansas territory, this time to face the Ward Cyclones. Central held the lead f or the first three quarters. Ward, however, un- leashed a last quarter rally to overcome the hard fighting Blue Eagles by the close margin of 27 to 24. Facing the Paseo Pirates, the defending champions, the Blue Eagles amassed a total of 30 points in the first half and came back in the last half to score 17 more points and scuttle the Paseo Pirates by the score ot 47 to 36. This score was only 4 points shy of the League record. In the final League tilt of the season, the Blue Eagles met the Southwest Indians. Although Central stayed close and tied them 26 to 26 in the third quarter of the game, the Indians opened up with a last quarter attack which the Blue Eagles could not stem and walked off the court the conquerors of a hard fighting Central team. The season ended with Central in a fifth place tie. MyrI Scofield. Guard, and Dan Hammontree, Center, received Honorable Mention on the All-Star Team. In the school, Coach Frank Guemple presented, at a special assembly nine players making up the starting team. MyrI Scofield and Fred were chosen as co-captains of the ' 44 team by their teammates. The follow- ing week found the Eagles be- ing nosed out by the East Bears by the close seme of 46 to 45. The Southeast meet brought together in the century dash Bill Sidebotham of Central and Kent Evans of the Knights, who were rivals in the 100 and 220 yard dashes last year. In the 100 it was Evans who forged ahead of Sidebotham to break the tape half a step ahead of him. In the 220, however, Sidebotham came back to overcome the favored Evans by a good margin. The pole vault brought together Guthrie of Central and Red Spaeth of Southeast, who were also rivals last year. Spaeth won the event with a vault of 10 ' 6 . which was a g 1 height, considering the muddy condition of the track. Although the meet was held on a rainy and muddy track, some 1 timings were turned in by members of both teams. The East meet was verv close and was not decided until the final event, Special recognition should be given to Bob llemen- waj fine broad jumper and dash man, who, during the relay, pulled a muscle in his leg, but continued under great pain to finish his share of the race and maintain the lead that was given him. _ , .,, , ,, In the coming state and city meets. Central will be well rep- resented in all events. In the high hurdles there will be Julian Snow and Fred Trodden, both returning lettermen from last year ' s team. In the hundred-yard dash there will be the Eagles two speedsters. Bill Sidebotham and Bob Hemenway, while in the !20 il will I ' Sidebotham and Bill Best. In the city meet. Sidebotham is favored to win points in both of these events and will offer keen competition in the state meet bob Hem- enway will be representing Central in the low hurdles. Bernard Carey, newcomer to track this year, has shown fine ability in running the 440-yard dash so far this year, and much is ex- pected of him in the city meet. Running with Carey in the 440 will be Bob Thompson and Bob Merrill. In the 880-yard run. Central fans will be expecting a good showing from their two runners, Jim Smith and Don Fitzhugh. a letterman from last year. In all of the field events, Central ' s chances are good, as they will be well represented by Fred Prudden and Bud rinnell in high jump. Bob Hemenway and Bob Peters in broad jump, and Hob Guthrie, Loren Chapman and Gene Furnish in pole vault. A dangerous threat will be Central ' s relay team, con- sisting of Best. Furnish. Hemenway and Sidebotham. Due to the necessity of going to press early, we will not be able to report the outcome of the city meet. But previous dual meets can give us a pretty good idea of who the city champion will lie It will rest between Central. East and Northeast, who have many outstanding tracksters. These three teams have all had an impressive season. The bad weather we had throughout the track season in- fluenced the outcome of many of the dual meets. The Kansas City chapter is one of the most outstanding in the country, and Central is one of the leading schools in the chapter. This year has heen a banner year for all Red Cross activities at Central. The whole student body has given its hearty coopera- tion to all the projects of the Junior Red Cross. In October we gave $144.47 to the National Children ' s Fund, which is used to provide shelter, food, clothing and medical care for refugee children. We prepared forty-rive Christmas gift boxes for the veterans at Excelsior Springs. Individual students have worked on publicity and radio scripts, as staff assistants, and in surgical dressings. As a Home Service project, the Junior Red Cross has under- taken the preparation of Central ' s Service Record. There are now over twenty-one hundred names of Central graduates and former student in the service of our country. All year long, the students of the Art, Homemaking and Wood- working departments have worked on the production of articles for the pleasure and comfort of our service men. The climax of our year ' s activities came with the annual drive in March. Central ' s very fine contribution to this war fund was $1,210. We are grateful lo the faculty and the student body for their splendid cooperation in the work of this great organization. 63] VatUety AfiXfltt Time Out Left to right: Tom Wil- son, Dick Hartzler, Ken- neth Wright, Jim Peter- son, Gerry Beeler This Is the Army?
