During his junior year, Bill Grimm was the only one of the class who lettered in football, while Paul Bockshammer, Wfinsron Balke, Chuck Russell, Harold Schumaker, and Don Sarver received awards in basketball. The class chose officers as follows: James Fowler . . ., ,,..,,,,,,,, Presidenl Dick Beach ,,,,,,, Aide Frances Maloy.. .. ,,Y,,, Aide . ,,,,,, ,,,....,,,,, A ide Bob Havighurst . Wfith the beginning of the senior year, this class once again blossomed out and began to show their worth as overlords of Central. Frances Maloy was elected president of the Girl Reserves for the year, sharing honors with Bob Havighurst and Dick Beach who were chosen to head the Boys' Hi-Y. Guy Loughead and Vance Olson both won berths on the second team of the mythical all-star eleven. Raoul LaNoue was given the appointment of major of the Central Battalion and proved his worth as commanding officer. The Central Round-Up was a great success, and many of the senior class par- ticipated. The Student Council chose as the two presidents, Bob Havighurst and jack Carduff, while the spring play once again starred Bernadine Aaron and Fran- ces Maloy. The highest grade on the Senior Test was 140, our class showing up well. The remainder of the year was a thrill-packed, never slackening era of enjoyment with Senior Bal- lot, R.O.T.C. Hop, National Honor Society, and Intersociety following each other in rapid succes- sion, each event helping to make our final year at Central our most pleasant one. CLASS Swishing skirts, happy laughter, and exclama- tions of Oh! and Ah! rend the air as spring brings that grand occasion, Graduation, at last. But under- neath this happy, excited chatter will be something deeper, more penetrating, a certain sorrow that tells us it has all come to an end. These last four years have been so filled with activities that time has not been sufficient to enjoy these days to their fullest CXlCI'lt. But now, with the sudden realization that they are to end, comes appreciation, in part at least, of what these crowded years have brought. The class now known as Central's Class of 1940 was first organized in 1936, as freshmen at Central junior. Then several of its members won places at the front of the class with high scholastic honors, winning silwr and gold medals as awards. Al the head of the organization was the following group uf eletted officers: 'wer ' .Wi f UF Page ro . ll.. 1940 Frances Maloy... .. .Pl'L'Jid4?'1l Guy Loughead.. .. ,,,, Vice-President james Fowler, ,, ,, ,,,,,, Secretary . ,..,,.., ..'I'rear1n'er Dick Beach.. . Moving to the senior building, many students made records for themselves. A few had parts in the spring play, Headed for Eden, and Dick Beach won at gold medal in Formal Essay. In its junior year, hitting its true stride, the class moved forward with many honors and added responsibilities falling upon its members. In dra- matics Frances Malo, and Alfred liigenberg had important roles in the spring play, New Fires, and Marilyn Dewar, Rosemary Richardson, and Vera McNary were starred as soloists in the jubilee. First place ratings were captured at Intersociety by Bob Havighurst for Biography and Bernadine Aaron in Declamation.
