HAT 0FF T0 CET The student body of Central is an enigma, a baffling series of contradictions. It is at once eager and reluctant, savage and urhane, progressive and reactionary ,-fin short, it is a reflection of the most paradoxical of all human phenomena,-1 the average mid-western American. These many aspects of student charac- ter are a blessing to editors and sponsors of the Centratian. They make it possible for the editors to produce each year an authentic and yet completely novel pic- ture of Central student life. Cut possi- hitities are as wide and varied as the character ot the suhject. They may range from the picturesque crudeness ot the hill- ML. hilly to the suave smoothness of the city bred. In choosing the Topper as theme for the 1938 Centralian, the staff sought to emphasize that element of sophistication present in the Central student body and portray it as a striking contrast to last year's Ozark theme. For undoubtedly, there is sophistica- tion at Central, however immature it may he. We have tried this year to throw the spotlight on this facet of Centrats many- sided personality. We, the staff, hope sincerely that this portrait, which is as representative of ourselves as of our patrons, will give you as much pleasure to study completed as it did us to create.
