He was noted for his primitive inode of life, his drawling speech, and his instinctive mistrust of furriners. Tough, lank, rangy, self-sufficing, suspicious of the law, he was either your friend or your foeg there was no half-way mark. If trouble arose, he was apt to take the matter into his own hands, hence the clanishness and the lending ten- dencies of the Uridgerunnersf' Until recently the modern world has passed by this isolated group leaving few evidences of modern improvements. The bucksaw and the hand plow still hold among them an eminent and almost undisputed place. The recently-built concrete roads, however, are bringing new swift-moving methods, and ultimately this group must either adapt itself to changing trends or be crowded out by other and more progressive types. The 1937 Centralian pays tribute to our Ozark neighbors, valiant, rugged, and independent in the ways of a past generation. DRE I I N ' V , : . U 5 if ff, t'lg7'7In - ., O' v . w lw' W7 i X pw In the legends and traditions surrounding the Uzark Hillsmen of Missouri, the l937 Ccntralian has found its inspiration. VV'e do not pretend that We have here presented an accurate picture of the Ozark type. Qur representation is es- sentially :L humorous exaggeration so palpable that We trust it will neither deceive nor offend. The true Ozarker, being an almost unique personality, is the most character- istic of Xlissourians, all others being more or less cosmopolitan. Besides, he has rfrcentlv been brought into the spotlight by the striking mural paintings of Thomas llart Denton, to whom we arc indebted for two contributions in this volume. ,Xnotlicr reason for the celebration of the Ozarker is that he is, in all prob- ability passing. The Ozark type, like all other distinctive groups, is the product ol' isolation. 'lihat isolation ended in 1925 with the introduction of our present modern state highway system which has cut through the Qzark county a hundred .lifts-rent ways. turning what was once termed the backwoods into the vacation land oi our state. lt remains to be seen just how long the Ozarker as a type can siiiwixw- this mr.-tropolitan invasion. Certain outstanding personalities have given this group a sense of fellowship and unity that is most unusual in a class of its size. Among its cherished recollections is the lfreshinan year at Junior High. The charity contest was the outstanding' event, Bob Preston and lnez Hill ranking first and second respectively. Then came the painful but fascinating experience of learning Life is real! Lite is earnest lu from the more experienced Juniors and Seniors. New, exciting horizons were disclosed: clubs, mixers, plays, sudden popularity of a few-all came and passed like a pleasant reverieff i13l GSS fi 937 During the .lunior year, leaders began to develop in the class, who many times were called upon to preside in the absence of Seniors. The high points of the year were: the Amateur Contest, with Bob Preston as Major Bowesg the initiation of Variety Night as a regular activityg and the election of the Junior Class officers. The following students were given recognition: President, Bob Prestong Aides: Peggy Shaw, Ray Loman, Jack Minor, Ieryn Greene, and Betty Ann Quiett. The Senior year has been a culmination of the loyal friendships that have characterized this group. Among the incidents worthy of mention are the inau- guration of the Municipal Auditorium for the interscholastic basketball contests, the high ranking of Kenneth Aber on the Ohio Intelligence Test given to all seniors: the presentation of 'ffirowing Painsf' the annual Spring playg the sub-- stitution of music through the public address system for the Mixer Orchestra to 1,1-Oyide the Swing Tunes at the mixersg the winning of first place in the Veloz and Yolanda Conti-st tfheld at the .lubilestaj by Jay and Joslyn Case, the winning of the tri-state and liubinoff contest Calso at the .lubilestaj by David Sarserg and finally thi- selection of class officers and Senior ballot celebrities. S'l'L'Dl2NT Ct.JL'NClL Always an active organization at Central, the Student Council this year un- der the direction of Mr. VVatson cutstripped former records by the energy with which it met all school problems and needs. Some of these were: the inaugu- ration of the activity tickets which enabled students to engage in three major school activities, the sponsoring of another Variety Night, the directing of the Centralian sales campaign, the installation of the public address system for mixers, and the engineering of a student assembly program. The activity ticket made it possible for a greater number of students to at- tend football and basketball games and to subscribe to the l.uminary. This plan did much toward creating real school spirit. More mixers were held this year than last, and attendance was larger than at mixers of recent years. .Xltogethen this alert group has set a standard of interest and enthusiasm that should serve as an example to future student government bodies. THE ART CLUB The object of the Central Art club is to broaden the knowledge and enjoy- ment of art among the members of the art department. ln order to become a member of this organization, a student must make at least in art, and main- tain a grade of MMU in all other subjects. The thirty-four members, meeting on the first and third Tuesdays of every month. have enjoyed many worth while programs. Mr. Edward Voegele, president of the student council at the Art Institute. gave a talk, discussing the scholarships offered by that institution. He exhibited some interesting work created by the students. Ifrank Goodman, head of the art department of the Kansas City Star, talked on the art work of a newspaper. ,X discussion by Miss Lillian NVeyl, city art director, was followed by a film, NIP Are All Artists. Every other meeting has been turned into a work period in which work on an assigned project such as clay modeling, illustrating stories. chalk drawinggland pose work has been developed. Accompanied by lXIiss Coah lflenry. the club has made two trips to the f-.rt Gallery where a guide lectured to them on the Indian room and other exhibits of unusual value. TROIIYERE CLUII The Trouvere Club, which was organized in 1918, has done much to promote an appreciation of good music in Central. Members of the Central band, orches- tra, or chorus who make li or in music are eligible for membership. The name Trouvere was taken from the Iirench word for tronbador, which means wandering minstrelf' The colors of the club are royal purple and gold: the emblem, the beautiful fleur-de-lis. Meetings are held alternate Tuesdays, and each member is retjuired to take part on the progrznn at some time during the year. Since its formation, the club has been supervised by Bliss IYhitney. Mr. Xtil- fred Schlager, director of the Central band, has been its helpful coeznlvisor since the fall of 1936. 1761 ULYIVIPIAN CLUB III I:'I'Ii IIIIIIN I. The entralian, 1937 The 1937 Centralian staff has been exceedingly fortunate in having received the almost unanimous support of all the departments and activities at Central. In no previous year has the cooperation of all departments been so evident. Many records were broken in the compiling and selling of the annual. More Senior pictures will appear this year than in any previous issue. With the excep- tion of two home rooms the home room section includes the entire enrollment of the school. That buying a Centralian has become a Central tradition and that the Qzark theme of this years annual is overwhelmingly popular were more than proved by the outstanding success of the 1937 Centralian sales campaign. All former records were shattered. A total of 1,789 books was sold, over 300 more than dur- ing any previous campaign. Ray Loman, selling 170 annuals, broke the record for individual sales, the total up to this time having been 125. The staff is enormously grateful to Mr. G. R. Watsoii and his salesmanship classes for the successful manner in which they handled the Centralian campaigng to Miss Coah Henry and her art students for their art posters, lettered sales strips, and paintings on the general store 3 to Mr. M. Lukens and his woodshop boys for their work on this same displayg to Mr. Wlilfred Schlager, and those members of the band who contributed Hhill-billy'l musicg to Miss Virginia Robertson and sev- eral of the girls in her expression classes who produced the dummies and provided the make-up for the hill-billy bandg to all the teachers who have supported the annual by making collections under the new payment plan: and to the student body for its splendid support throughout the campaign. The staff this year is grateful to the art department for its excellent work in humorously caricaturing the Ozark hillsmen and for adding, in that way, a lighter touch which helps to balance this issue. At this time the chorus and the following members were awarded rankings: Chorus: Excellent Ruth Duncan, soprano solo: Excellent Harold Du Gay, baritone solo: Good George llingham, bass solo: Good junior Roberts, tenor solo: Average Mary Gillespie, mezzo-soprano: Good Anita Yotaw, soprano: Average Donald Jones, Bob Davis, .Harold Du Gay, and Herman Mooney were chosen from the chorus to make up a quartette which sang over VVDAE on the Gold- man .Xmateur Hour. The same group sang two songs for Variety Night. The chorus contributed the musical numbers for one broadcast in the series of school programs over lVDiXl on Thursday nights during the school year. lt has been contributing attractive numbers for assembly hall programs and open house, and has assisted both the orchestra and the band in their Sunday afternoon concerts. The entire chorus, augmented from the classes, has participated in the com- mencement exercises for the past two years. 1 ln these occasions the eighty voices with the orchestral acerimpaniment have been able to create the breadth of volume necessary to fill the big arena of the Municipal .Xuditorinm without sacrilicing the quality of tone. moi 3 f '.- 1 ff: 4 ,V Y' 1. IVG PIGSKIN PARADE JUST LOOKING RACK find that . . . the 1936 Eagles lost in their initial game of the season to W'yandotte's liulldogs, 7-O. UAS KET I BALL LETT ERR l EX Carl Morgan, llob Rau, Jerry Coleman, Ray lYilliams, llob llrenton, Bill Sarver BASKETBALL SEASON This year's Hock of Eagles finished in the cellar position in the interscholastic race. The Kingbirds got off to a Hying start by defeating Pembroke Country Day to the tune of 40-15. Ray Wfilliams starred in the tilt by scoring four field goals in the same number of shots. The Kingbirds continued their victory string by a 32-26 triumph over VVilliam Chrisman High School. The Nlfyandotte llulldogs proved tougher for the Eagles and they finished their pre-league contests on the short end of a 32-25 score. The interscholastic race began on the next Friday with Central tackling Northeastls Vikings. The Eagles began the game in typical fire-engine fashion, gaining a comfortable lead at the half, but immediately following, the Vikings un- leased a furious attack before which the Eagles wilted, losing the game 23-18. Calvert and Sarver were the Central stars of this game. Paseo was next on the schedule. At the opening gun the Central boys, using all their scoring tricks, gained a lead and maintained it until the third quarter. Then, like an avalanche, the Paseo team overwhelmed the Eagle basketteers to win 30-19. This was Bob Rau's last game of the season and he played it valiantly. A non-conference game came next with tl1e Rockhurst Hawks, and again the Eagles showed power by defeating their opponents 27-26. The game was a real thriller, being won only in the last few seconds of play. Back again to the league schedule, Central's next opponent was the East Bears. Holding the East men scoreless for the first nine minutes of play, the Blue and VVhite began by displaying first-rate basketball, only to lose 2-l-11 in the later stages of the contest. The boys were after the Southwest lndians' scalps in their next game: they nearly got them, too. Fighting hard to the end, they were finally nosed out 25-23. lrish and Calvert were the individual stars of this clash. Giving their Crimson opponents all they had, the lllue Eagles made their next game one of the most exciting games of the season, even though the final score, 22-18, did show against the lllue and W'hite. Like many of their other games, the Central-Manual clash was lost in the second quarter, when the Eagles seemed to lack the punch necessary to carry them through to a victory. The last game of the season was hardly all that a last game should be. The boys fought hard, but lost, 48-20, under a tornado of goals scored by llestport, in which an initial 8-2 lead was completely obliterated. lYilde was the star of this last game of an unsuccessful season. Although the Eagles won three games, none of these were league contests and thus did not add to the team standings. T941 I 5. I li P N Q? ' .YN . ' TRACK TEAM Although the annual meet with VVyandotte was cancelled this year because of the cold weather that delayed training of both teams, Central's interscholastic track season otherwise got off to a good start. Carl Morgan, holder of the city record in the 880, and Glen lflowerree, high and low hurdler, are the two letter men on the team. The dashes should be fairly well taken care of by Frank Kavanaugh and Burch King. Allen Corn and Bob Jeffries are the two most consistent polevaulters: while jack Mills, Clifford Painter, Lowell Sigars, and LeRoy Tull should win some points in the high jumping event. Bill Matheson and joe Boutros should gather points in all the meets for superior ability and in shot-putting. ln the broad jump lfrank Kavanaugh, llurch King, and Jack VVilson have all approached 20 feet and should improve as the season progresses. Captain Morgan, although specializing in the 880, will also represent Central in the 440 where he has already made very commendable time. Among his run- ning mates in the 440 are llill Sarver, XYallace Starnes, and llill Leuszler. Sam llibhard and liill Leuszler assist Morgan in the half-mile run. t lur representatives in the hurdling events are Glen lflowerree, .lack lYilson, and Sam llihhard. The relay team, composed of llurch King, Iiruce Meier, hloe llall, and lfrank lsavanaugh, is undefeated in the city at the present time hut was defeated by the Northeast relay team in the li. ll. relays. Continuing wth soccer, basketball, ping pong, boxing, volley- ball, paddle tennis, and soft-ball, the program rounded out a program of athletics in which virtually every boy in Central could have played. Next year this type of recreation promises to be bigger and better and, above all, more helpful to boys interested in sports.
