Giving the class a brief character sketch of one of the great modern American playwrights is the class instructor, Mrs. joan Holborn. Class in Plays Kindles Interest in Theater Reading Modern Plays became more popular this year as student interest grew since it was first offered the sec- ond semester of last year. Approxi- mately 60 students, enrolled in the course each semester, had the oppor- tunity to read a variety of modern plays and see some live performances. Many students had never even seen the live performance of a play. Students gained better understand- ing of the theater by reading plays Central's Drama Club and the Bay City Players did and then went to see the same play performed on the stage. Several students took such an inter- est in the course that, after observing the work of our local Players Theater, worked back stage on some of their evening performances. Other objectives of the course was for the student to understand people, their problems and the way they were dealt with. They reached better under- standing of why people act as they do by studying various characters. This course was designed especially for students who found literary analysis difficult. It is much easier to follow oral presentations. Reading one of the many modern American plays, a normal sight in Mrs. loan Holborn's third hour class, are students, Cyndy Anderson, Nancy Kelpinski, jim Howard, Marsha Deal and Sally Hart. academic!21

Central's English department again sponsored a trip to Stratford Festival Theater in Canada where students from the English department saw Mac Beth . Then it was on to Stratford where students had two hours to look over the city. At 2:00 P.M. everyone met at this replica of the Globe Theater to see this fine play of Shakespeare's per- formed by professional British actors from England. At the end of the play students had a chance to ask the leading actor a few questions about the play, the theater and acting in general. It was then back on the road stopping only in Sarnia again for supper at the Victorian Inn. The buses returned at 9:30 P.M. Hurrying to the theater, after a lunch break, for the start of the play are Central High School students Bill Murray, jackie Frazier, Linda Digby, Tom Barid, Kathy Wagner, and Richard Geneczko. 20facademics l l l Stopping to strike a pose like that of Shakespeare is jerry VanPelt, Senior Drama student.

Drama A students study Greek, Roman and Medieval drama while Drama B covers more modern American plays and the playwrights. This course includes the reading of plays and acting by the students. The designing of costumes is also part of the course and learning how to apply stage make-up. Much of the make-up work done in school plays was done by these drama students. Set design, props, lighting and pub- licity are also covered in this two se- mester course. Successful completion of two semesters of Drama fulfill the speech requirement. Students expressed themselves by acting and because of interest and experience some took part in school plays and became Thespians.
