Giving the class a brief character sketch of one of the great modern American playwrights is the class instructor, Mrs. joan Holborn. Class in Plays Kindles Interest in Theater Reading Modern Plays became more popular this year as student interest grew since it was first offered the sec- ond semester of last year. Approxi- mately 60 students, enrolled in the course each semester, had the oppor- tunity to read a variety of modern plays and see some live performances. Many students had never even seen the live performance of a play. Students gained better understand- ing of the theater by reading plays Central's Drama Club and the Bay City Players did and then went to see the same play performed on the stage. Several students took such an inter- est in the course that, after observing the work of our local Players Theater, worked back stage on some of their evening performances. Other objectives of the course was for the student to understand people, their problems and the way they were dealt with. They reached better under- standing of why people act as they do by studying various characters. This course was designed especially for students who found literary analysis difficult. It is much easier to follow oral presentations. Reading one of the many modern American plays, a normal sight in Mrs. loan Holborn's third hour class, are students, Cyndy Anderson, Nancy Kelpinski, jim Howard, Marsha Deal and Sally Hart. academic!21
