Don't you think that we should all consider it to be a primary duty to learn at least the names and the moves of the piecesg to have a notion of a gambit, and a keen eye for all the means of giving and getting out of check? Do you not think that we should look with disapprobation amounting to scorn, upon the father who allowed his son, or the state which allowed its mem- bers, to grow up without knowing a pawn from a knight? Yet it is a very plain and elementary truth, that the life, the fortune, and the happiness of every one of us, and, more or less, of those who are connected with us, do depend upon our knowing something of the rules of a game iniinitely more diflicult and complicated than chess. It is a game which been played for untold ages, every man and woman of us being one of two players in a game of his or her own. The chessboard is the world, pieces are the phenomena of the universe, the rules of the game are what call the laws of Nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. has the the we We know that his play is always fair, just, and patient. But also we know, to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance. To the man who plays well, the highest stakes are paid, with i i that sort of overflowing generosity with which the strong shows delight in strength. And one who plays ill is checkmated-without haste, but without ' remorse. -Thomas Henry Huxley 1 1 i 1 i i 1 i i it , Q x 0 Y s x RX . Many of us, as Seniors, have learned that we need look no farther than Room 335 for all the guidance and counsel necessary to complete our high school careers and to begin new ones. She is playing a most vital role in our lives, and playing it well. And so, we hope that she will con- sider this dedication a vote of confi- dence, and a vote of thanks,-most sin- cerely extended. The first goal of the department is to give its students a good command of the language because this is essential for competence in any vocation. The skills and habits learned in this course will be of great value throughout life. The second aim in the teaching of English concerns personal development and happiness apart from the job. Through the study of literature, the student gains an understanding and ap- preciation of life itself. The department believes this is essential to the educa- tion of a well-rounded person. To ac- complish this, it is necessary to acquire proficiency in the skills of reading and to develop an appreciation for good lit- erature. Miss Griffiths, Miss Harris, Mr. Wilson Mrs. Brown and students involved in research Miss Taylor and Mr. Braendle proving a point Mr. Serresseque encourages a speech class Miss Schultz awaiting the next stampede nf, Knickerl and Miss Stoner share a literary vignette Mrs. Anketell and Mrs. Lemke in charge of scenery. Note the background they created. Miss Kessler and Miss Kinnanv.+Librarians The Finger of Suspicion Language Department A concentrated study of a foreign language is worthwhile for many rea- sons. The study habits developed are good for mental discipline and memory exercise. Learning the processes of speech from a foreign country is quite important for the eventual understand- ing of the processes of thought of this people. Proficiency in a foreign language is required for many occupations which are growing in popularity today: foreign serviceg exchange teachingg some engi- neering positions, etc. And, equally im- portant, there is little which contributes more to the broadening of character in a student than the ability to read and speak a language other than his own. X Stiff ., if ,V r fi Mr. Franek, Mr. Krause, Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Klein, Mr. Cody, Mr. Willoughby The Vocational Department at Central is divided into two groups: Industrial Arts and Day Trade. The Industrial Arts classes are open to both boys and girls and are devoted more to exploration and general knowledge than to skills of trade. Under the Day Trade plan, boys only are offered more specialized curriculum with the emphasis placed upon development of skill. These skills prepare a boy for his future oc- cupation. The Spaghetti Department Ho Mrs. Purgraski demonstrates Hower arranging as a facet of I-Iomemaking Years ago, the Homemaking Depart- ment concentrated almost entirely upon sewing and cooking. But today, because of the changing times, a girl can study interior decoration, child care, consumer buying, grooming and personality, figure control, handi-crafts, dietetics, home and family living-and cover cooking and sewing thoroughly, too. Because the average girl becomes a wife and mother eventually, and because many mothers carry outside jobs leav- ing home responsibility to their daugh- ters, the Homemaking Department be- lieves that its course is beneficial to any girl regardless of her academic plans. He learns to make sound decisions, and to perform many necessary functions correctly. Some of these are borrowing money, giving credit, buying insurance, and paying taxes. In short, the student is given a chance to become successful in business, and as a citizen. Special skills are offered to further this end. They are typing, shorthand, and general oH'ice work. Maybe I'd be better at shorthand. 1 'Wi k,,,virM Mr. Eidt demonstrates the revolutionary hunt-and-peck method as 95 Miss MacDonald counts noses . Mrs. Gustin corrects a student's paper. The school orchestra of over fifty musicians performs at various school functions: the Christmas Assembly, the operetta, the Festival of Music, Parents' Night, the exchange assemblies, and, of course, Band Bounce. Central's Band, particularly in the marching season, contributes much to the character development of the stu- dent. He learns to be loyal, reliable, punctual, and responsible. He works hard to develop co-ordination and stamina. The vocal department helps to im- prove the speaking voice besides giving the student the opportunity to study singing and music. The A Cappella choir and the band also participate in the different programs sponsored by Central. Art Department Mr. Wright is doubtful. Central High School offers art study on an elective basis. The first year of art can be elected at any grade level. Stu- dents who take advantage of all four years of art are generally serious about furthering their studies professionally or in college. Art instruction develops a love of beauty and design. The Art Department be- lieves art experiences are important to all students, not only the ones who seem to have the natural aptitude for it. Mr. Graham improves his mind. Mr. Wright is very doubtful! Science Department ,af 7 .ima 'xx i t 23' wr i ,AXA , .- f k,,. General mathematics in the ninth grade followed by vocational and busi- ness math is provided for the non-college student desiring technical training. There are several addi- tional advantages, however. A physical leducation student increases his muscular istrength, stamina, and endurance. He ,learns a variety of skills, and if he ex- cells at one, he may be permitted to l join a team. Belonging to a team gives him the democratic philosophy which iis so important in good sportsmanship. V1 W QJWD Q5 l A M35 Gov't, Clubs, Mus'c, Drama Agathos Agathos is the name of Central's branch of the National Honor Society for superior students. Members are chosen by an advisory board on the basis of scholarship, leadership, and service. Agathos has assumed responsibility for the following services: 1. Mailing Christmas cards to graduate students in the first and third years following their graduation in an attempt to evaluate their high school education. On the card, which they are asked to return, are questions like aj What courses did you find helped you the most? by What are you doing now? 2. At the end of each marking period in the school year's first semester, names of freshmen appearing on the honor roll are compiled for each of the schools on the East Side, or in some cases schools from the West Side who furnished freshmen to Central. These lists are then mailed to the school to keep the school posted on the academic achievements of their pupils. This is also done for the semester honor roll list and is usually made up before the list is released to the newspapers. The club meets once a month and at that time does the tedious task of addressing the birthday cards. A special committee appointed for the purpose, takes care of the honor roll list. The high point of the year is the annual Agathos honor assembly, held in May of each year, when the club members, as well as the new Juniors, are introduced to the school. The club is only open to Juniors and Seniors, with selection coming in the spring of the senior year. 1st row Cleft to right? A tea is given in September of each year for members who have been chosen the preceding spring. During Homecoming, the members present the queen with a scrapbook of the football season. Each Queen's Court represent- ative is given a small football autographed by the players. At Thanksgiving the Club makes a present of a basket of food to a needy family. At Christmas the members exchange gifts. Ecclesia sponsors an informal school dance, a potluck for members, and a banquet with the Central Citizen- ship Club. At each meeting of the Club, an English program Cbook review, play read- ing etc.J is planned. Scholarships are offered to one or more members enrolling in Junior College. Quill and Scroll is a national honor society for high school students who have distinguished themselves in some field of journalism. Members are selected by a vote of the faculty advisors. - The Club was organized here at Central just last year, which means that as yet there is little more than the formal structure. The next few years should result in an expanded organization truly contributive to the esteem of our school and our journalisic pursuits. Debate Debate is a pro and con argument conducted under a definite, clear-cut set of rules. The techniques of debating are essential tools for active participation in a democracy. These techniques are invaluable for all kinds of speech-making and recitation. A student learns how and where to find material to support a contention. He learns valuable habits of study and research that immensely im- prove his chances of success in any field. He learns to organize clearly and be- come an acute and critical listener. He learns to reason closely and carefully. Most important of all perhaps, he comes to see that there are sound arguments to be offered on both sides of any important question. All these techniques and habits, and the resulting broadminded attitude, are of great importance to the student's general education. Every spring excitement spreads through the halls before the final elec- tion of the President and Vice-Presi- dent. Bright posters, amusing and in- formative announcements, and a cam- paign assembly precede the final walk to the polls. Many student activities are sponsored by the Student Government. In the fall the Kickoff dance is held in honor of the incoming Freshmen. And, during the football season, the Homecoming ceremonies are highlighted. Under the direction of the combined Student Gov- ernments of Central and Handy, the annual Holiday Prom is presented, fea- turing a famous band. The Student Government also main- tains order in the congested halls and cafeteria line. Many projects, such as the Goodfellows' paper sale and this year's flag project, are sponsored by this group. Following three years on the Michigan varsity as a q arterback, Tessmer was accorded the honor of being na 'l the most valuable player on his team by the Chicago Tri ne. ter graduation in June, 1933, Tessmer entered the coac ing profession, and his last position before World War II was at Hillsdale High School. uring the War years, he attained the Naval rank of lieu enant, and was placed in charge of physical education trai ing at two of the largest naval bases in the country. l li ollowing his discharge in 1945, Tessmer accepted the coa 'ng challenge at Bay City Central. And it was just tha too, for the war and other factors had joined to cause a general downgrading of athletics at Bay City. l is first season at Central was 1946-47g he began as foot all backfield coach, head basketball coach, and head tenn s mentor. fall of 1948, when another coaching upheaval thrust him into the athletic directorship of the Wolves den, a duty ful- fille! until last February. e continued in this capacity for two seasons until the lllespite the added responsibility of being athletic dir- ecto , Tessmer continued as coach in the three varsity spo s. His basketball teams, while never winning a Saginaw Valley Conference title, did cop two regional crowns, and staged a memorable running series with Saginaw Arthur Hill,on the hardcourts through the early 50's. Added administrative duties forced him to give up the basketball job at he close of the 1953-54 season. It was a generous gesture for him to step down then, for he knew that his next year's club would be one of his best. He chose instead to let the new coach, Art Paddy, start on firm footing. He continued as backfield coach until the fall of 1958, and his tennis teams dominated the Conference for many years. From 1954 to 1958, Tessmer-coached net squads ran up a string of five straight loop titles. As an athletic administrator, Tessmer played a large part in the formation of the Central Sports Club, now recognized as one of the finest organizations of its kind in the state. It now sells around 1,700 football season tickets annually, besides being the top booster of the high school's athletic program. Also, Tessmer played a key role in establishing wrest- ling as the ninth varsity sport here six years ago. When he assumed the athletic directorship, the Flint Conference schools, Central and Northern, had controlled the Valley's scheduling to the point where it was a distinct disadvantage to the other member schools. Tessmer fought for, and finally gained, a schedule which is now more ba- lanced and which rotates in part every several seasons. The Saginaw Valley Conference will be a nine-team organization in all varsity sports beginning in the fall of 1961, and a share of the credit here, too, must go to Tessmer. One of his last duties was to do the lion's share of the work drawing up the unwieldy schedules in the various varsity sports. As citywide athletic director, Tessmer's duties will be to co-ordinate the athletic activities of all the city's public schools, elementary and secondary. This will include expan- sion of the present physical education program and an in- creasing of the intramural program at the individual schools. It is definitely a step upwards for the man who has led Central into a position of prominence in Michigan athletics, From the coaching staffs, faculty, and students of Central, past and present-best of luck. rf., . HEAD COACH ELMER ENGEL SW 9 ' iw A uf, ,L ALL-AMERICAN LARRY PIOTROWSKI FCOTB LL STORY Had the 1959 Bay City Central football season been limited to just seven games, everybody except Pontiac and Flint Northern would have been satisfied. After the first seven gridiron contests, the Wolves had in- creased an undefeated skein to 19 games and appeared headed for a third straight Saginaw Valley Conference title. But on a bitterly cold night in Pontiac, the upstart Chiefs pulled the upset of the 1959 prep year, defeating Bay City, 12-7, and the following week Flint Northern turned the trick, 19-7. The latter contest was one of the dampest games on record. Central opened the season with a 60-0 romp over Lapeer and followed with a 34-19 licking of Lansing Sexton. The following week, Handy hosted the first game in the storied rivalry between the local Class A high schools, but location made no difference. Central won that contest, 14-0 although losing first string quarterback, J. C. Dunn, for most of the remainder of the season. Behind the clutch field leadership of Bob Crampton, Central opened Valley Conference action the following week and blasted Flint Central, 17-0. Arthur Hill led for 44 minutes, but a desperation pass play from Crampton to End Ken Warren pulled the game out of the fire and gave the Wolves their fifth win, 20-18. Midland Q13-OJ and Saginaw C14-61 provided wins six and seven before Pontiac and Northern ended the season with their upset wins. End-tackle Larry Piotrowski was accorded the highest honor ever attained by a Central gridder when he was named to the first-team prep All-American, selected by the Wigwam Wiseman of America. He was the only Wolf given a spot on the first team All-State squads of the various polls, and on the first team All-Valley, had in accompaniment Fullback George Archer and Tackle Dave Sampson. Cross Country Story Despite the behemoth efforts of Seniors Dennis Ahler and Bill Dodge, Bay City Central cross-country- men failed to win a dual meet during the 1959 season. Ahler and Dodge were two of only three letterwinners who returned to Coach Ken Norris last fall, and lack of depth in the third, fourth and fifth slots hurt heavily. It was a young team, though, with over half of the runners being tenth graders This would indicate an upturn in the Wolf cross-country fortunes in coming seasons. High spot of the year as far as Central was concerned came in a dual meet against Flint Northern when Ahler took his lone first place of the season against the strong Viking contingent. Dennis Aahler is shown at the regional Class A meet in Flint last fall. M '52 SUI Www The Wolf basketball team, wracked by graduation last june, played its heart out last winter, but managed just one win in 15 regular-season starts. However, Coach Bill Ullenbruch's unit showed good desire and an eagerness to learn something that had been notable by its absence in the past few years. Central's club was composed mostly of underclass- men, which gives rise to promise of a good season next year. Only Ken Warren will be lost from the starting five. Warren, a starter two years running, led the team in scoring with a 16-point average, while junior Forward Bob Crampton was second with 13. The Wolves improved steadily throughout the year, and in the second Flint Central encounter, avenged a 24-point loss with a tight, 69-67 victory. In district tournament action in Midland, Central played perhaps its linest game, but lost to a late rush by Arthur Hill, 53-47. Warren came in for his share of post-season honors, being first-team All-Valley selection, and gaining recog- nition in the various All-State polls. sa 39:3 . Q I ! 1 I, ,, x '34 N-T-Z. iff! Wrestling Stor On the drab wrestling mats on Pontiac Central one night last February, Bay City Central matmen brought their school its greatest athletic glory of the year when they upset the odds to win the Saginaw Valley Con- ference wrestling title. It was the fourth straight crown for the Wolves, who have had possession of the traveling trophy since it was put into circulation. Winning the Conference title was the high point of the year for Coach Ray Duch's proteges, for during the regular dual meet season the Wolves compiled a so-so record of 5-5-1. Crowned Valley champions were Bill Dodge at 112, Don Siepke at 120, Chauncey Green at 138, Lonnie Lowery at 145 and Wayne Frieders at 165. In a normal track year, their performances would have been good enough for a winning season, but the spring of 1959 saw one of the greatest schoolboy track performances ever in Michigan. Overall, Coach Ken Loop's runners won two dual meets, one against I-Iandy, and missed by one-half point a victory over Midland and the Wildcats in a triangular meet. The tennis team, hurt by graduation which took its top four singles players, suffered its first losing season in many years, winning only six of 13 dual meets. The golfers improved steadily throughout a soggy season, but won only four meets in 14 tries. For this iirst time in several years, the Centralia is going to picture spring sports from the previous year. This has been made necessary because of deadlines which must be met and which prevent time coverage on the sports of the spring in which the yearbook is pub- lished. The 1959 baseball team coached by Elmer Engel was figured to be a strong contender for the Saginaw Valley Conference title, but lost their first three league games and never got untracked. The Wolves finished with five wins and nine losses, but had wins over all the Valley schools except Flint Central.
