XVe herein invite you to look hack to relive some ol' the highlights of our voyage together. Once launched in the magic balloon with our traveling companions, the laculty, we were carried through myriad classes and work schedules and examinations and high into the realms of gold . XVith them we touched down in new and exciting places lo explore the broad highways ol' ideas, lord the rivers ol' deep thought, and climb the peaks ol' inspiration. Entrained in our DeXNitt-Clinton, we steamed through the busy Administration ollices and pulled in to see the secretaries and caleteria stall. Atop the swaying elephants, our howdahs proved to be excellent vantage points from which to view the dignitaries in Student Government and the long line ol' Seniors completing their last-year maneuvers. .Xlter hacking our way through a jungle of activities, a rakish limousine swept us ofl' to Central's whirling social season. Then we cycled into sports and the athletic departments, rat- tled through those baby pictures taken way back when, and finally set sail lor home on a sea ol underclassmen. Un the longer trip on which you are now embarking, we hope you will occasionally glance through this log to renew the colorful recollections of a journey in 1958-59 that will always be a part of us. N A 5 XX? g TRIB TE Central High School was indeed fortunate when, in 1950, i gained the services of Elmer Engel as head football coach. Football had reached a new low in the two previous to 1950 the XVolves hadn't won a game in two years, losing 18 straight. In the short nine years that Engel has led the Wolves Central has won two outright Saginaw Valley Conference crown: and tied for two more, a record unsurpassed by none of the fiv other conference teams in the past nine years. In nine short years he has built a football dynasty at Centra XVhile other schools may have good football teams every fe' years, Central has had consistently good squads year in and ye: out. The peak was reached this past fall when the Wolves tic for the Valley Crown, were undefeated in nine games and wc the state Class A championship, in the opinion of the Associatt Press and Detroit Times polls. .11 ... Zit Tegsmer Ken Loop Paul Grein LL STATE FOOTB LL STORY lt was a long 29 years for the school and an even longer ni seasons for Head Coach lilmer Engel, but Central High Schr finally had an undefeated season under its belt. Rambling through a nine-game schedule with only the 13- tie with undefeated lflint Central to mar an otherwise parfi season, the XVolres were co-champions of the Saginaw Vall Conference, and in the opinion of the Associated Press a Detroit Times were the best team in the state. The team, which won its second straight league crown, roll to a new team rushing record, gaining 3604 yards through 1 air and on the ground to make it 3 years in a row that t mark has been broken. Grueling days of practice paid off for the VVolves as tl began the season by wrecking three non-conference opponci Owosso, 51-0g Lansing Sexton, 47-69 and cross-town rival Han 56-0 before starting play in the tough Valley conference. Due to a scheduling quirk, the two top ll's in the Val and the state, Central and Flint Central, met in the league ope and battled to a 13-13 tie in the IVolves' stadium before 9,500 fz The Mfolves' wrath was taken out the following Friday Arthur Hill, 60-0, and the following week Central met z defeated a tough Midland aggregation, 12-7. Back to the Valley and a 5-1-0 Saginaw High rout the n week was followed by a 33-0 win over a tough Pontiac team round out the home schedule. The undefeated season was closed out in Atwood Stadi Nov. 19, when Central downed an always-rough Flint North team, 27-9. Individual awards came hard and heavy following the of the season, with john Young being named the team's n valuable player, and Center jim Kanicki and Halfback B1 Kokaly being named honorary co-captains for the season. The man who has guided Central's football fortunes these past years was born November 29, 1919, in LaSalle, Illinois. He got his diploma from LaSalle-Peru Township High School in 1938, and after a year at St. Mary's College of California he enrolled in the University of Illinois. While playing varsity ball for the Fighting Illini in 1940- 41-42 as an end, he compiled an enviable record and was named Most Valuable Player by his teammates in his senior year. After graduating from university, he, like so many other young men, served in the United States Marine Corps and re- :eived a citation for meritorious service during the bloody Iwo lima campaign as a First Lieutenant. Following his discharge from the Marine Corps, Engel accepted the Athletic Directorship of Barrington High School n Barrington, Illinois, where he coached football and baseball. After only one year he was asked to accept the Junior Varsity :oaching job at his alma mater, Illinois, under Head Coach Flay Elliott. , ,..--- --I -nv.. The above trio, plus Quarterback Jerry Gross, Guard Gary Sluttall and End Bob Bishop were named to the Hrst-team All- lalley squad, and Young, Bishop, Gross and Kokaly were honored vith hrst-team positions on the various All-State teams announced t the season's end. The rest is history. In his nine years Engel has amassed an overall record of 62 wins, only 16 losses and three ties, and discounting his 1950 mark of 3-6, his record is even more startling, 59-I0-3 or a winning percentage of .846. His mark in the Valley Conference, regarded by all as the toughest football league in the state, is more startling, 32-I2-2 for the nine seasons, the best record of any school over that period. The school owes a great debt to Elmer Engel, for not only has he blessed our football squads with his presence, but has gained the respect and admiration of all who are fortunate enough to be associated with him, both on and off the gridiron. SWIMMING STGRY Freemlernlckcorbm Under the direction of Hrst-year coach Don Morey, Central's underclassmen-studded tank team closed the season with a 6-7-1 record, and was especially productive in the hnal dual meets of the year, winning revenge swims against teams which had downed our Wolves earlier in the year. Chuck Requadt, freestyler, and Butterllyer Ray Talaga, plus another freestyler, Fred Eurich, and Diver jack LaForest were the top individual performers for the Yvolves, and the team as a whole qualified an unusually large number of swimmers for the state hnals. By sports: The baseball team, under Coach Elmer Engel, fell in the latter half ol the season last year, and this spring's squad promises to remedy this stigma with a high finish in Valley competition. Track, with Coach Ken Loop at the helm, will have an unusually large number of lettermen on hand, and the team RETURNING LETTERMEN looks forward to another fine year. Coach Zit Tessmer's tennis squad, which has consistently won more Valley titles than any other varsity team at Central, and which has dominated Conference tennis circles for the past half- decade, will be seeking their hlth straight league crown. The golfers will have a new coach in Bill Ullenbruch, and will give any of the Valley schools a run for their money in the coming season. i l 1 I FIRST ROW Qfrom lefty Tom Shook, Gary Hagens, Scott Ribenack, Bob Cramprton, Rick Moulton, Dick Post, Bob Clark, Jim Katt. Founded in 1932, the gov- ernment is by the students to provide the best for the entire student body as well as the school it- self. Each spring the students go to the polls to elect the candidate of their choice, after hearing the platform and campaign speech of each team. The victor will head the Student Government the following year. The Student Union does many things to brighten our life at Central. They sponsor the Kickoff dance honoring the freshmen the Hrst week of school, the exciting homecoming, and the annual Holiday Prom which this year fea- tured the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
