They may be seen working in their respective offices or walking briskly through Centra1's halls. Mr. Glenn A. Omans and Mr. Theodore B. Southerland have been the Principal and Vice- Principal respectively of Central High School for the past two years. As the administrative heads of the school, their responsibilities are great, for Education is a big business and a very important business too. Mr. Omans and Mr. Southerland stand behind the policies of Central and are ready to take care oi problems which cannot be handled by the classroom teachers. Discipline problems are included, and both men have many times helped a student find his way. Board of Education Standing: L. I. McCu1ly, business agent: Robert Reinhardt, trustee: Lyle Ewing, secretary and accountant: Dunbar McBride, trustee: Paul Briggs, superintendent. Seated: Herman Koffman. trustee: Benjamin Boutell, trustee: S. Dillon Foss, president William Anderson, tmstee: Fred VanHaaren, trustee. Superintendent Superintendent Paul W. Briggs, whom you recognize with the Board of Edu- cation, is the head of the Bay City Public Schools. He is directly respon- sible to the Board of Education, and because of his tireless efforts and work with the Board, the Bay City Public School System is known as an out- standing school system. Central High School with its third tloor of Iunior Col- lege is the largest plant in the city system, and a friendly relationship ex- ists between Mr. Briggs and the Board of Education and Central High School. Central is proud of its men behind the men behind the students. To them we say, Thanks for everything. DEANS AND COUNSELORS The two Deans at Central play an important part in the lives of the students. Helping students adjust to a new school, helping students plan their programs, helping students plan their careers - all this and more come under the work of the Deans. The Grade Counselors help to keep the students on the job. Your presence in or your absence from school is always known to your particular grade counselor. The attendance record at Central High School is good, and the credit for that fact may be placed directly at the doors of the Grade Counselors. His team spirit helped the morale of the whole squad and he eamed a backfield spot on the All-Valley eleven. This also led to the Wolves' 8-l record for the season. A man who has made his teams and himself felt in the Valley Conference and in the State is Elmer Engel, Central High's head football coach. Elmer came to Central from the University of Illinois where he was the coach of the reserve team. Previously he had played l three years of Varsity football at the University and in 1942 was voted the most valuable player on the team by his teammates. Since Elmer became coach at Central live years ago, his teams have built an impressive record of 32 wins, ll losses, and 2 ties. '.,' ' 16 Football Quarterback That elusive Namon at Flint Central on a rollout against Owosso When September came, football fever swept the nation and no less in Bay City. Here at Central a smashing nine weeks ended with what was labeled one of the three best squads in the history of the town. Coaches Elmer Engel, Zit Tessmer, and Ray Duch directed the eleven. Owosso was first as the Trojans fell 46-0 in the non-Valley opener. Central's squad then flew across the State on DC-3 planes sponsored by the Sports Club and defeated Muskegon Heights by a 20-0 tally. Traditional rival Handy was swept by with a 42-6 margin and the Pontiac Chiefs were next, 33-7. The Wolfpack was on its way but the competition grew tough- er. Nevertheless, tw o Valley games followed with victories over Sag- inaw High 32-7, and Flint Northern, 33-12. It was close as the final score was 13-7 with the Wolves still victorious over Arthur Hill. The last game was near. It was Flint Central at Atwood Stadium, a traditional jinx! Fate denied the final win and the Indians fought and scrambled for the elusive 12-13 duke over the Bay City team that would never say die. The members of the squad will always remember that Friday night, as will their school, but they can have nothing but pride in their hearts in knowing that they were members of perhaps the great- est athletic group Central High has ever produced. Out of this squad, Quarterback lim Chesney and Tackle Bill Grein, received All-State berths. On the first All- Valley eleven were Chesney, Grein, Guard Dick Syring. and Halfback Dick Mrozinski. Narnon Smith heads for Saginaw paydrrt Football Here are Varsity cheerleaders Pat Hartwrg Bmb Fischer, Sharon Willet, Betty Toyzan Nancy Arnold, and Marge Moore Through wind, sleet, rain, and snow, the cheers must go through. This Was, or at least should have been the slogan of the cheerleaders of Bay City Central. Their spirits were not dampened by the worst of weather. Their main purpose was to organize and urge on the dis- play of school spirit in their fellow stu- dents. They practiced regularly for perfection and strived to give the best support. Their job, however, was not one that could be done without support. lust as the teams needed root- ers, so did the cheerleaders need their followers. Their job, many times taken for granted, was truly indispensible. Their complete season record was 6-won and 9-lost. While the Wolves lost only three lettermen last season, they still lacked in height. They came back, however, in speed and accuracy to make an upset over Handy 64-35 and revenged their 54-50 defeat earlier in the year. The Wolves also defeated Owosso twice, 62-56 and 51-44: Saginaw twice, 78-43 and 83-78: and Midland, 81-56. After winning the first game over Owosso, Flint Central moved in and defeated the Wolves, but with a terrific comeback the Wolves won the next one from Saginaw, outscoring them by thirty-five points. When Pontiac moved in they defeated the Wolves to start Central's losing streak of four in a row by the Chiefs, Arthur Hill, Flint Northern, and Handy, the Paddymen's Crosstown rival. Then the Wolfpack went to Owosso where they defeated them for a second time. Flint Central then topped the Wolves for a second time. Central started a winning streak with wins over Midland and Saginaw only to be beaten by Pontiac and Arthur Hill. When Handy visited our courts the Wolves defeated the Wildcats only to lose again in their final game to Flint Northern. They are led down the field by the majorettes cmd the drum major. At parades or the football pre-game and half-time shows this lively group of performers is found. This group with their batons and other props are always on the job. Snow, rain, or just freez- ing Weather, the twirlers are present putting on their acts. Unknown to many in the audience are the work and hours of practice that go into the perfection of the baton routine. The drum major and majorettes practice, march, drill. What is their reward? It's the satisfaction they have in knowing they've done their best. The band does a wonderful job, but the baton twirl- ers add that certain touch of perfection. There- fore, it is only right that our majorettes and drum major should be saluted. Music The A Cappella choir of Central High Music! Music! Music! This is brought about at Central with the help of the Orchestra and the A Cappella Choir which are two well known branches of music at Central. These groups can be seen daily practicing for the many programs that they present. The orchestra is made up of forty-six members and is under the direction of Mr. Cramer. They provide music for school plays and assem- blies, the Mid-Winter Concert, and Band Bounce. Both the A Cappella Choir and the Orchestra have given exchange assemblies with other schools. The A Cappella Choir is made up of eighty-two members with Mr. Cady as their director. These voices of Central sing for assemblies, Band Bounces, Mid-winter Concerts, the Christmas Pageant, graduation exercises, and various other programs. Ah! to be young again! Those were L the days. Childhood seems to be set off in a world of its own. A world free from worries and freeyfrom care.JWouldn't it be nice if this held true always? Yes, of course, it would, but 1et's face facts. It just doesn't. Why? Well, to put it mildly, there are many reasons, but- one major reason and pr l em is-+-the task settforfeveryone to earnhis living. That little fact may belstressed far back in yourthoughts, but the day will come when you will find it staring you right in the face. What are you going to do about it? The decision is entirely up to you. It is a hard decision, and in most cases, ultimately a worthy one. With this in mind, this section is devoted to Baby Pictures, Class History, and the Advertisers. The Baby Pictures prove that once upon a'time the sophisticated seniors 'were not so sophisticated. The Class History will help you to discover the qual- ities that some of them have. Will they make good leaders, tradesmen, and businessmen? Read on. Then, form your opinion. The Advertisers, some former Cen- tralites, are showing Central students their interest in their futures. The entire Nation is depending lon them. the products of high schools. It is always realized what is contributed by them is going to be welcome. Now, after this prelude, you may turn the pages into the past and present of future American citizens, the graduating class of 1956. , .
