N THE SENATE, which was presided over by President Mulcahy, there were three senators-at-large as well as three senators from each class. This year the Senate was particularly active. A new Constitution was drafted during the summer months, and after con- siderable debate it was submitted to the student body and passed by a majority Vote. I Members of the Senate met regularly every Wednesday morning, first period, at which time the Senate was in open session. Central's Student Union was well-represented in Lansing, Royal Oak, and Saginaw. Last Summer President Mulcahy, acting as Chair- man of the National Convention in Detroit, had charge of organizing all Michigan high schools into a state-wide student union association. The Senate sponsored several apple sales, the All-School party, the Inaugural Ball, and a skating party. Faculty sponsors of the Student Union are Mr. Adams, and Mr. Greenstein, who continued his sponsorship after being transferred to Junior College. THE SENATE l7Z5l 510' 'fi A-JJXK Nkg X J X DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE HE IJICPAR'l'MICN'l' UI JUSTICE was organized in September, 1936, under the sponsorship of Mr. Greenstein. XYithin the last year two divisions have been added to the Department of Justice, the Traffic Squad and the Criminal Detection Squad. The Traffic Squad has had charge of the parking situation around Central and has been working overtime since parallel parking has been established. The Criminal Detection Squad has investigated all the petty thefts and annoyances brought to its attention. To have more members in the Department of Justice became necessary after these two new squads were organized. The member- ship has increased from twenty to 'thirty-five. The Department ot' Justice has taken over several duties ot' service to the school. Its members distribute the Centralia, and assist the 'I'. N. T. Club at athletic games and dime-dances. They are also on dutv at class parties and the annual All-school Party. OFFICERS September-June Captain ......... HE FIRST CENTRALIA annual came out in 1923 and the sixteenth this year. On the staff of the 1938 annual were thirty-six students chosen from the June graduating class by the editor-in-chief which worked with a committee of five from the January class. A new system of selecting the editor-in-chief was put into effect this year. Each senior advisory group elected one person to act on a nominating committee. This committee then elected nominees for the post of editor-in-chief, and from these nominees the senior class elected its editor. A change was also made in the faculty pictures. Formerly the cuts were done in long panels, a method which proved to be expensive when a teacher left school. This year a separate cut was made of each teacher's picture. The sponsors of the annual are Miss Harris, literary adviserg Miss Eicholtz, art adviserg and Mr. Warner, business adviser. ANNU65 STAFF 1 AGATI-I OS HE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY was organized in 1921. High school scholarship societies which were formed at that time in schools throughout the nation were united in this organization, whose main objectives were to be Scholarship, Leadership, Char- acter, and Service. The society represents the fundamental objectives for which schools are instituted and gives recognition to those who have attained most nearly the desired ends. The students are elected to the society upon the recommendation ol' the faculty. The formation oi' the Agzathos chapter oi' the National llonoi' Society in Hay City Ventral High School took place in 1924 due to the interest and efforts ot' Miss Schroeder. Since then Agathos has sent many ot' its members into active lives of service, character, and leadership. The main speaker ot' the Fourteenth Annual Banquet given Jan- uary 19, 1938, was Glenn A, Omans, principal of Eastern Junior High School. The banquet was unique in that each Agathos member was the guest ot' a faculty member. The sponsors ot' the Society are Miss Schroeder and Miss Taylor. I-'IIUNI ILHXX llill 4l:ulI:uiII. To instill an interest in good dramatics was its original sincere purpose, an aim which it still cherishes today. The title, Boot and Buskin, is derived from the Sock and Buskin , the symbols of comedy and tragedy. The original group was comprised of about forty members. The membership has been approximately fifty during the last year. Boot and Buskins program is now built around the production of six one act plays a semester, presented in the Littel Theatre. This year the club gave one play under student direction. There are now a total of five groups under the leadership of Miss Taylor, Mrs. Weber, Miss Leas, Miss Frost, and Miss VVittwer. M CENTRALIA BI-WEEKLY ROM September, 1937, until the new term in January, 1938, the Centralia Bi-Weekly was published under the old system of publi- cation, the only change being made by the appointing of co-editors, llorothee Bouchard and Lorraine Hess, instead of the staff being headed by one editor as formerly. At the beginning of the new term of '38, a new system ot' issuing the paper was adopted which enabled each staff member to gain experience in all types of writing. Under the new system, an editor was appointed to edit each issue of the paper. Following this idea, the staff published nine issues of the school paper without a dirt column. This scholarship is awarded on the merit points achieved by the commercial student during her high school career. The social activities of the club this year include the initiation party, the Mothers' tea, a dime dance, and the annual party which compliments the graduating seniors of the January and June classes. HE JANUARY graduating class of 1938 presented Children of the Moon January 12 in the school auditorium. The play was an intense drama. The story centered about Jane Atherton who was in love with Major Bannister. Mrs. Atherton, who did not favor their romance, told Jane that she was a child of the moon and could never marry. Dr. Wetherell and Madam Atherton did all they could to prevent Jane from taking seriously what her mother had told her. The thought, however, played on Jane's mind until she went insane. The repenting mother told Jane that she should have no fear of becoming insane, but her consideration came too late. Major Bannister and Jane flew to the moon where they found happiness together. The play was directed by Miss LeRoux. Under the direction ol' H. H. Evans, the band has played for all home football games and traveled with the team to Saginaw for the Eastern game. The band, i11 conjunction with other musical organiza- tions i11 the city, participated i11 the Music Festival which was originally planned for June 13, but, because of inclement weather, was postponed until September of' the IISVV school year. Motion pictures were taken ol' this All-City event, and the pictures of' the marching band, ably led by Drum Major Bob White assisted by former leaders, Edmund Creighton and Russell Ball, a1'e included in the film project depicting the history of school activities which was completed recently after a year's work. This organization has been an important factor in the success of' a number of school f'unctions as well as civic affairs, providing the music for many of' tl1e assemblies a11d presenting a concert for the entertainment of' the parents who were students for an evening on Hack-to-school night. The Band Bounce, musical eve11t of' the year. was presented May 151 and 20. The band took a prominent part ol' the first half' of' the program, presenting numbers ranging from concert pieces to light novelty numbers with equal proficiency. The Band made its final bow at the J11111- 1'11mme11cen1ent exercises i11 the high school stadium. THE BAND 111--11 . , SMALL BAND HE SMALL BAND was organized as a club in 1935 and for 'two years before that was a unit of the band proper. It originated as the need for a small group which could play on call at any school function was made evident. Under the capable leadership of Tom Pettit, the band has developed into a smooth running organization. The boys were on the job at all the basketball games and contributed a major part of the enthusiasm so necessary to athletic functions. The success of the Old Newsboys' charity campaign was due in part to the enthusiastic spirit of the Small Band members who led the parade of Bay City business men through the business district. The membership in this organization is necessarily limited so that election to it is deemed an honor. l ,- f I fl V ,4 J F ,f ,JN,.'L' Zf vffccfff LL . 4, . T1-1E CHORUS 111111 - THE ORCHESTRA HE ORCHESTRA is the utility organization of the Music Depart- ment - ready with suitable music for any occasion. The fall term was devoted to the preparation for the presentation of The Messiah , for which the Presbyterian choir and the high school chorus combined forces, scheduled for December 20th. Their playing was of a professional caliber and contributed largely to the success of the production. The Messiah was presented in part for the high school students at a special assembly given the week before Christmas vacation. The orchestra also assisted the Junior College chorus in the Christmas program which that organization had planned for their own student body. Among the other functions for which the orchestra provided program or incidental music were the dinner for the Rotary Ladies' Night at the Wenonah Hotel, the Junior College play, the Senior play, the February Commencement exercises, and the Yoder lecture spon- sored by the Bay City Teachers' Club. A small orchestra assisted in the Exhibition sponsored by the Art Department by supplying atmos- pheric music for the living portraits posed by grade school and Junior High students. The orchestra members demonstrated their versatility and flexi- bility in the annual Band Bounce in which they gave concert numbers as Well as the numerous and varied accompaniments included in the latter half of the program. The orchestra concluded its busy season by providing music for the Junior College Commencement exercises in June. llI.Sl blullI-UIIlCl,l'1-l-1liz:1lwll1 Kaism-1' fl'l'lIlI'ilIIlIP. lwxvis lUIlvlllS4lll, IQJIIIIIXII XS 11 1111 XIIIX 1f1'2ll'lX, i'llUl'l'lll'1' .X1'nolfl, Aluriv All-Kay. fllZlil'1' 'l'1'm11l1l1-v.
