CLASS HISTORY lCont. l- On july 11, 1962, we enrolled as Seniors. We had an enrollment of 85 hardworking seniors. Hr. ltrCCl Dickens and Mrs. Bessie Walker worked with us as sponsors. We elected our officers as follows: president, Henry Thomas; vice-ptesident, Jetty Whitehorn; SCCICe taty, Gloria Tteadwell; setgeant-atvatms, Elbert Castlebetry. We decided that we should publish a year book and treasurer, Queenie Walls; With an unanimous vote we started to work to make our publication the best that Central has ever known. We decided to have an assembly program, senior talent show and a class tournament. Our assembly program was focused on the behavior and grooming habits of students. The senior talent show was a great success in that it aided us financially in the publication of our year book. The theme of our talent show was Rock- ing With the Stars. Thomas Frazier, Hattie Eggles- ton, Henry Thomas and Nadine Folks were masters of ceremonies of the show. We chose a lawn bullentin board as out claxs gift to the school. Throughout high School, Jerry Whitehorn, Lcnms Ware. Gloria 'Ilteadwell and Rachel Dunbar were actin- 4-ll'ets in their respective communities. Hattie liggleston and Lloyd Key were chosen as klt. and Miss ticntorian of 1963. They received the honor for having sold the most advertisements for the publication of our year book, out last major project to be completed. Graduation plans have been completed. Out class motto is We have crossed the buy, thL' ocean lies be- fore us. The class colors are blue and white and our class flower is the white carnation. Memories of these four years are stored up as rich treasures. We congratulate all the members of out class who have reached this peak in academic standing. We pay sincere respect to all persons who prepared us for citizens of tomorrow. We will always remember, with reverence, Central High no matter where we ate. History of C lass We, the members of the senior class of 1963, be- gan to make history in the year 1959. On july 11, 1959 the enthusiastic freshmen of the surrounding areas united to make an enrollment of 180. We had as our sponsors Mt. Outlaw and Miss McIn- tyre. Our elected officers were the following: presi- dent, Lavera Jones; vice-president, Hattie Eggleston; secretary, Gloria Treadwell; assistant secretary, Mat- tye Malone; treasurer, Lloyd Key; sergents-at-arms, Bobbye Smith and Alfred Lumpkin. The president chOSe a planning committee with Aritha McKissack as chairman. The committee planned the class activities for the year. We had a picnic, Freshmen and Sopho- more Ball and an assembly program. The activities were carried out beautifully. .The theme for the Fresh- men-Sophomore Ball was Beatniks In Paradise. The members of our class participating on the B team were: Howard Allen, Phillip Henry, Lee Ellis, Robert Treadwell and Warren West. Hattie Eggleston was elected attendant to the queen. Earma Sneed and Hattie Eggleston were members of the Cheering Squad. Arlene Agee was selected for the majorette corp. Our class worked hard throughout the year, and in July of 1960, we enrolled as sophomores, However, the class had begun to decrease tremendously. We only had 122 pupils to continue our history making. As sophomores we had as our sponsors Mr. Jason and Mrs. Bessie Walker. Kilgore and Mrs. Minnie Payton. Again election time rolled around and our officers Our home room teachers were Mr. were as follows: president, Howard Allen; vice-presi- dent, Barbara Castlebetry; secretary, Dorothy Lewis; treasurer, Queenie Walls; sergents-at-arms, Warren West and Arbie Barringer; historian, Hattie Eggleston. We chose blue and white as our class colors. Our planning committee planned a Fteshmen-Soph- omore Ball, a class tournament, a social and an assem- bly for the yeaHs activities. We chose Phyllis Pittman as our Homecoming queen attendant. Queenie Walls was our representative to the Stu- dent Council in their drive for Book Week . The name given her was, Miss Book of Beauty. Hattie Iiggleston assisted the F. F. A. boys in their year's program, and served as F. F. A. Sweet- heart. We chose Mertha Cooper and Cordia Thomas as Miss Best Dressed from our class. They represent- ed our class in an Easter parade presented by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Mary Tipler, Hattie Eggleston and Robert Tread- well represented our class in the Student Council. Assisted by Mr. James Kilgore, we presented an assembly program with the theme: An Hour with Negro Writers. The assembly was presented during Negro History Week. Johnnye Phillips, Loretta Patterson and Hattie Eggleston were members of the Dramatics Club. They were given parts in the play, The Night of January 16. We were successful in having our planned Fresh- men and Sophomore Ball. The theme that year was . HDancing Under the Stars. Henry Thomas, Jerry Jennings and Lloyd Chillers were active F. F. A. members. They held various offices and also received medals for outstanding work. Thomas Frazier received a medal for doing out- standing work in Industrial Arts. Loretta Patterson received a Science medal for doing outstanding work in Biology. In July of 1961, we were the junior class of Cene tral High. Our enrollment had dropped to 105. We had as our sponsors Mr. Jason and Mrs. Walker. Our home room teacher was Mr. Cheatham. We elected our officers thusly: president, Henry Thomas; vice president, Jerry Whitehorn; secretary, Gloria Treadwell; treasurer, Lloyd Key; sergent-at- arms, Betrain Thomas; parliamentarian, Lloyd Chillers. Our planning committee planned a social and the Junior-Senior prom as our class activities for the year. We, the junior class, even had the opportunity to choose the Homecoming queen candidates. We chose Dorothy Lewis, Gloria Treadwell, Queenie Walls and Shirley Fultz. The student body elected Shirley Fultz with a majority vote of 222. The Homecoming theme was nOnward to Victory. Queen Fultz was attended by Rhonda Faye White of the Freshman class, Gloria Caldwell of the Sophomore class, Gloria Treadwell of the Junior class and Dorothy Jean Lee of the Senior class. Our Homecoming game was played with the Oban- non Panthers. Our team was victorious. Following the game the queen and student body danced to the music of O. C. Cole and the Pipes. Our next big attraction was the prom. Hawaiia Lei as our theme for the prom. We invited five schools to our prom, and we danced to the music of O. C: Cole and the Pipes of Jackson, Tennessee. Outstanding members of our class in music were William Whitaker who was chosen as the band's drum major, and Betrain Thomas who earned a band medal. 0n the cheering squad Hattie Eggleston was cho- as cheerleader captain and received a medal for We ch ose sen being the most outstanding cheerleader. Honor r011 students were Mary Tipler and Gloria Treadwell. Perfect attendance awards were received by Queenie Walls and Mary Tipler. tContinued on next pageJ
