Then, someday, with the setting sun We pray chat our tasks will be well-dcne. aBliSSIE MAE MORGAN History of Class of l'56 In July, 1952, ninety-six ambitous freshmen began their four years of high school, here at Central High School, Hayti, Mo. Mrs. Bernice Smith was appointed as our sponsor. We began the year by electing officers as following: Johnny Jefferys, President; Rosetta Durden, Vice President; Ella Phillips, Secretary; and Margaret Weir, Treasurer. Melvin Cooper, James Jackson and Rosetta Durden made the basketball teams in the fall. The class was very cooperative and everyone enjoyed a wonderful freshman year. As sophomores our class decreased considerably, but we were forturnate to have our same sponsor. The remaining members of the class were still working together for the good of all. A member of our class, Rosetta Durden, was chosen to represent the Hayti chapter of NHA in the National Convention at Petersburg, Va. We began out Junior year with a lot of hard work and fewer students, thitty-six in number. At this time we had lost our dearly loved principal, Mr. J. E. Brodie. He was replaced by Mr. E. Nelson. The class was very small for such a large task ahead of us. Of ocurse, that made the few of us work harder than. ever to accomplish our goal, a successful Junior-Senior Prom. We sponsored various activities for the soul purpose of raising the needed finance. It wasn't the easiest thing we undertook, but with every one doing their part, we were successful in secur- ing enough finance to give an enjoyable, long to be remembered affair. Our hardest task had now been accomplished. .. Again another of our class, Ella Phillips, was chosen to represent the NHA chapter at the National Convention at Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Melvin Cooper representative of the Missouri State NF A judging team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia. By the time we begari our senior year.out class had dropped to thirty-five students. Our goal was to publish an animal and leavesthe school a souvenir. We started raising funds for l this purpose at a very early date. Mrs. Bernice Smith experienced the ups and downs with us. At this point of our career we lost two faithful members who were absorbed into the Kennett School System and gained four from New Madrid. In 1,956 Jerry Wilson won second place in the State NFA judging team, and will travel to Atlanta after graduation. Melvin Cooper was recipient of a first place award for NFA quiz, and will go to Mississippi after graduation. - We hope you will enjoy looking through the CENTORIAN that the class of 1956 worked so hard to publish. As we gaze through the Oracle's Goggles that are now beginning to clear of many clouds, we see Ella Phillips as sophisticated and very successful secretary to Robert Haynes, pres- ident of GMC in Detroit. On our continuing journey, we find Melvin Cooper coaching at Mich- igan University. We see a long air lane leading to a city. The city is Chicago. We see three familiar faces-ah, there is Bessie Morgan with her sketches . . . she seems to be designing an exotic gown. We read a magazine article stating that she is the world's leading Dress Designer. Pticilla McCain is bringing to life the styles being designed by Bessie, with her sewing ability. He: model is a live creature-none other than Rosetta Dutden. The bright lights have faded. Another city appears in the Oracle's Goggles. The city looks promising. We wonder who is here. Mildred Wright is making her morning calls on patients as head nurse in Home: G. Phillips hospital. Working in the next block is her charm- ing classmate, Deloise Brown, operator of Fat Lady's Paradise, a reducing salon. This business seems to be agreeing with her. She has lost so many pounds. Slow but sure Willie Elliott is Head Designer for McDonnell Aircraft Corporation in St. Louis County. A long road leads to Southeast Missouri. There's a sudden stop; we are in Portageville. Standing on the comet looking sad is Early Branch who says that Lovie Jones has just left him. Guess who is sharing his sorrows -none other than Robert Barlett and Charles Johnson. The rolling farm land brings us to Jerry Wilson, supervising a Variety Farm in Wardell, feeding the hungry mouths of James Guyton and Geneva Roweis family, about ten of them. We see Ruby Morgan in the uniform of a WAF, and Sylvia Elliott as a WAC. Some credit to our country. Curtis Tiplet, we see, is Wearing Air Force blue. Going still farther, we stop in Las Vegas, Nev. We see Albert McKinney as owner and operator of the Moulin Rouge. His stat blues singer is the noted Lovie Mae Jones, still singing her heart out. None other than Mr. Fred Frazier is the star comedian for this famous club. Guess who's secretary to the remarkable Albert McKinney? The quiet, friendly and sophis- ticated, in her own manner, Harrietta Lewis. Cruising back from Vegas we go to New York to sit in on the premiere of Geraldine Evans, appearing on the Ed Sullivan show. Still wandering around New York, we stop a moment to see how our friends, Freddie and Juanita, are doing, operating the The Ousley-Robinson Beauty Salon. We see a regular customer, Viola Ware, still patronizing them. The famous dancer, Clara Darrington, is the owner of a very popular dancing school in Kansas City. She is second to Katheryn Dunham. This is a glance at the future-some is as real and as near as tomorrow. Advice From the Seniors ADVICE TO THE ATHLETES All athletes must keep two or three facts in mind. First is cooperation. Without coopera- tion on the team, it cannot stand. The next thing is to find and develop the talent which each athlete has. With practice, each athlete should treat the other like brothers and work together, find each otheris mistakes and try to correct them before it is too late. By doing this you will develop better team spirit. Remember that each athlete is judged on the same basis; no one is better than the other. last, but not least, take the advice of your coach whether you think he is right or wrong, he should know his players best because of his previous experiences. It should be remembered that the outcome of any contest is never as important as the spirit in which the game was played. ADVICE TO THE JUNIORS To the juniors, we leave this advice: Cooperate with the teachers and most of all do not walk the halls during class hours. Stay in school and work harder and try to have your present number of juniors to graduate in 1957. We know the school equipment is not modern and sufficient but make the most of what you you have; instead of complaining about what you don't have. Keep the students and teachers busy reading your names on the honor roll. It only takes ani'S and above average. Be appreciative of small things, tolerant of each other. Make wise decisions, and be democratic in your thinking and speaking. Eliminate prejudices of those less fortunate than yourselves. We, the Seniors of 1956, wish you the best of everything, and remember to always look for the brighter side when things look the darkest. ADVICE TO THE FACULTY Keep up the good work of teaching and preparing students to meet various obstacles that they may encounter in the future. We know your time is limited for many reasons and that you cannot do all yould like; however, we appreciate your numerous efforts. We, as a graduating class, find the equipment and visual aids very inadequate to prepare us for the pattern of modern living. The science room, library, physical education, and homemaking departments, just to name a few, are good examples of our limited facilities. The high school days are rather difficult for us. We are on the threshold of childhood and and adulthood where decisions are harder to make. The methods you used were not satisfac- tory. We plead for you to understand us, and let us feel closer to you-to give us more freedom to express ourselves instead of pushing us around and away from you. We are eager to express our thoughts and activities. Become Masters of your rooms and you can solve your discipline problems.
