M FOREWARD The 1952 CENTORIAN attempts to portray in pictures the splendid accomplishments, various activities and good fortunes which the past years have brought to Central High School. In years to come, when the great pictorial records presented here are once again reviewed, it is our desire that the cobwebs will be wiped from your memory and Central High School, its faculty, and its students will bring back mem- ories that give you much delight. irfdinn Q ff QW f C, We look at what we call the heavens from the surface of the earth, observing the sun and giving thanks for our wonder- ful environments. Why not think of people also and give thanks to them? Let us think of four years prior to today and think about our wonderful leaders who have helped give us the knowb ledge which will better our lives. Let us think of one leader who was willing to share all of her knowledge with us. The brightest star in our school life was one who led us so willingly and patiently--Ulrs. Mary J. Harawayl. In memory of her life-long service to our school and to us, V- the Seniors, dedicate our yearbook, 'The Centorian,' to the late Mrs. Mary J. Haraway. 'X UMW TR TIN xii WL X X4 YSYMQN' Members of the Senior Class and Students of Central School: 'Our entire educational program is centered around you. We want a better education for you--an education which will develop obedience, a respect for authority, and a sense of responsibilityg an education which will enable you to make a profitable livingg an education which will help to distinguish you in the social world, and an education which will instill in your hearts an everlasting devotion for the Democratic way of life. 'The physical plant, the instructional staff, and the curricula are being expanded and improved so that you might qualify better for an outstanding place in the adult world. 'In bidding the seniors farewell, may I remind you that every person gets--not what he deserves--but what he earnsg increase your earning capacity and your just rewards will be forthcoming.' The greatest highlight of the year was the crowning of the King and Queen of Central High, who were elected from the Freshman Class. They were King Fred Braswell, and Queen Pinky Brown. Look! Blair and Brown made the first team in Basketball, and were able to play in the tournament, which was a success. Also Mary Banks made her debut as a pianist. As Central opened once again in the summer of 'b9, we presented Centralfs first Hobo Day Parade. We danced and paraded to the strains of beautiful music. The best dressed hobo was to be crowned queen of the hobos for the entire year. Can you guess who was crowned queen of the hobos? Your faith- ful Centralite--Pinky K Speedy I Brown . Look! Delimma Johnson represented Central at the National N.H.A. Meeting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Delimma, a member of the Sophomore Class, a few days after her return, gave a report on the N.H.A. National Meeting in an Assembly sponsored by the Sophomores. As Juniors we knew our responsibilities. We began the year with hard work. We sponsored all of the affairs to raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom. We wanted to be responsible for one of the best affairs that Central had ever enjoyed. At last it came--the night of the Junior-Senior Prom! As the couples strolled through the hexagon entrance and across the dance floor, their hearts swelled with pride, for the Juniors had displayed excellent taste in selecting the music and decorations. The Junior-Senior Prom will always be a fond memory. As Seniors of Central High, we had a class of forty- five. Forty-six had dropped by the way side. We were proud that Fred Braswell had earned enough units at the end of his Junior year to enter Arkansas State College, Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Our greatest undertaking was to help publish our Annual. We sponsored few other affairs, because we were looking forward to the greatest affair of our lives-- graduation. To the faculty and dear old Central, we uid farewell. As we go out into the world, trying to achieve our life's ambition, we shall forever hold you dear to our hearts. 4 f. 1. CLASS PROPHECY Behold! As I look into the Star Gazer the destinies of the future appear before my eyes. I am about to unveil the mysterious and startling futures of the graduating class of 1952. As the curtains of time fall back and the future becomes the present through the miraculous help of my star gazer, I see Louis Gardner majoring in Chemistry and Taurus shows me that four years later, he is Mr. Cheatham's assistant in Central's Chemistry lab- oratory. As I gaze farther into the Star Gazer Leo shows me Otis Iancie approaching the steps of Tuskegee Institute, enrolling in the Med- ical Departmentg and, eight years later he is Chief Surgeon at the Memorial Hospital in Wardell, Missouri, with Ollie Johnson, Margaret Jones, and Alene Lopp employed there as nurses and Lebirda Wheaten as his assistant. In the adjoining office is Dentist Sandy Davis waiting to pull housewife Nora Durden's tooth. Ahhhhhhhh! Do my eyes fool me? No! Virgo shows me Maggie Moore and Ruth Toombs as librarians counting the three books deposited in the Central Library. Hummmmmmmm! My vision seems to blur, Ohhhhhhhhhl Now I see--- Gemini shows me Samuel James up to the plate batting for the Brooklyn Dodgers. My gaze deepens, and I see Rufus Yancy and Louis Jefferson, expert brick masons, laying the foundation for Will Goodman's garage, where he is the Chief Mechanic. Cancer shows me George Howard in the great metropolis, New York City, established in a big law firm, with Margaret Bell as his secretary and Doretha Kuykendoll as his stenographer. We find by Aries, Pinky Brown and Arie Moore assisting Misses Farris and Buchanan in the Home Economics Building. Pisces takes me westward. I see Theresa Love and Mae W. Banks teaching courses in Commercial Education at Southern California. If I look close enough, Virgo will show Maxine Ivy, Queene Hunt, Thelma Key, Dora Brown and Mary Blair in the Elementary Depart- ment. As Capricorn takes me down around Hermondale, I see Levi Lemons working on his big cotton plantation and in his spare time teach- ing his son to play basketball. Staying in the servant house is James McNear tutoring the daughters of Raymond Mann and Willie Brown in Shorthand. I also see Joel Cooper as a prosperous farmer winning the county awards. If we follow Libra, in the Bank of Hayti we will find James McKinley, Willie Allen, Isaac Ferguson and Cleophus Tipler trying to secure a loan. Under Sagittarus I see employed at a business school in Miss- issippi, Dilemma Johnson teaching Commercial Arts. Aquarius shows the black hair of Messrs. Cooper and Carter turning to silver and their hands are no longer steady, I see Noma C. Fisher coming to assist Mr. Cooper in the Mathematics Department and Dorothy Weir coming to assist Mr. Carter in the Physical Education Department. As the future grows dim Scorpio shows Elizabeth Mosley dusting off the shingle above her sewing shop in Wardell, Missouri and making plans for her dress designers, Evelyn Freeman and Geneva Loggins. I see by Leo, Mozell Brown as the 1969 k-H Club Agent for the Hayti District. As the curtains of the future draw to a close, the twelve signs of the Zodiac wink good-bye, but as they do so, I see Mrs. Harris with her patience and endurance in her Shorthand Class, Mrs. Bush, with her everlasting tolerance, trying to help her students master English. Lastly, I see Mrs. Earhardt, Mrs. Mays, Mrs. Bush, Mrs. Harris and Miss Buchanan making preparations for the 1970 edition of The Centorian. Central School Of Ours Remember Dear Central, oh school of ours, You have guided us through many troubled hours. We are proud, courageous, and know no fear, We are Central Grads, and that rates a cheer. The teachers of Central, we love them so, They are eager to help, our problems they know. What can we give them for their care? For all their help they have given us here? We can strive to make Central be, The best school we will ever see. A little spot of heaven here at hand, Let's make Central the best in the land. To you Dear Central, we will always be true, We are proud of your colors no matter the hue. When fr m you Dear Central, we must go, We will be proud your colors to show. Arranged by Mae Willa Banks Name Willie Allen Mae W.
