The rights and liberties which we as citizens of tomorrow of a great republic enjoy have been purchased with the blood and suffering of gen- erations past. The outstanding function of American education today is to give every boy and girl a thor- ough understanding of those rights and liberties, and to instill in each one a complete knowledge and full acceptance of the fact that for every privilege there is a corresponding duty. Living in our democracy today training means in those habits, skills, and attitudes which will help young people to grow into happy, cooperating individuals, able and willing to accept their adult responsibilities in society. PHILIP CARLSON Assistant Principal The class of 1958 will be graduated at a time that will give it a unique position between the past and the future. This is the year of the Minnesota Centennial when all citizens of Minnesota look to the past and reflect upon the accomplishments of Minnesota high schools over the past 100 years. Certainly public educa- tion has been at the center of Minnesota development. This is also the international geophysical year when all nations are uniting in a scientific effort that will affect greatly the future of all people of all nations. This is the year of the man-made satellites and the race for supremacy in space travel and space control. As you continue to learn and to seek answers to questions, remember the importance of developing char- acter, for knowledge alone is not enough. Knowledge which is not accompanied by high standards of char- acter may be used to harm rather than to aid mankind. Then, too, always bear in mind that there are more failures due to lack of character than to lack of knowl- edge. It has been our aim that you have an opportunity to develop character while in search of knowledge at Central High School. KENNETH A. BERG Arsistant Principal 71609 A. LILKQ c,QcL0mfN 9
