Tremendous changes and improvements have taken place with such rapidity as to leave us breathless because of what they portend. Our high school' experience has been preparing us to participate in this future with its unlimited potential success. The eternal heritag-e of youth- eagerness, fearlessness, perseverance, and natural joy--will continue to carry us through in spite of the present seeming turbulent condition of the world. Today We, the Class of '48 ,hopefully and joyously accept the challenge of the times to Work for a future filled with a number of things that we should all be as happy as kings. .-Ji? It is a wise student who makes her acquaintance early in his career. MISS SAS and MISS RUGG Miss Margaret Sas and Miss Ruth Rugg, our office managers, are ready for business as usual. With their assistants, the girls who take office practice, they keep the daily routine running smoothly. MISS I-IAIGH and MISS MC REAVEY Miss Edith Haigh, director of student personnel, and' Miss Marian McReavey, our school nurse,.are' the doctors who minister to .the mental and physical ills of the stu- dent body. They are very essential in keeping up school morale. . - , MRS. NONIE JOST Mrs. Nonie Jost, Cafeteria manager, with her assistants, Miss Sibilla Kline and Mrs. Margaret Henderson, are ready to ring the lunch bell. The theme of this year's Cehisean strikes a highly optimistic note and rightly so, for without the unquenchable optimism of youth our civilization would long ago have com- pletely run down like a clock that needs winding. The world is so full of a number of things is more true now than ever before. The youth of today have the fruits of the labor bf former generations poured into their laps in great profusion. The possibilities for good which lie in this great store of practical knowledge should be most inspiring to them. There are all the material means and tools at hand to raise all peoples of the earth to a higher level of well being and prosperity than has ever before been known. BUT ONE ALL IMPORTANT THING IS STILL NEEDED TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE. All the accumulated knowledge, the in- credible scientific achievements of the human race, can bring only greater destruction unless all is organized and directed by the highest ideals and wisdom known to man. Nothing less will do. This is the challenge to youth today! To put their optimism, their boundless enthusiasm and ambition into the job of applying the highest spiritual ideals known to man to the solving of the world's problems. Then, by and by, we can all become as happy as kings were supposed to be in the days of old. A. G. MEIER A. G. MEIER, Principal MR. INGEBRETSON Mr. Adolph Ingebretson, assistant principal, has learned to know both teachers and students in his first year at Central. He is always ready to cooperate with everyone who comes to his office. FACULTY SECTION MISS KNIGHT . Dedication In Sepember, l944, the class of '48 entered Central as eager, bewildered ninth graders. At that time we were primarily concerned with the new ex- perience of high school and gave little thought to the vast world outside. The number of things which came into our lives all seemed to make us happy as kings , Now that we have advanced in knowledge, as well as in years, we realize that we must prepare ourselves for a part in this changing world whose horizons are constantly receding. For helping us attain a clearer realization of values, we are greatly in- debted to our class advisor, Miss Marie Hart. With our deepest appreciation for her kind understanding, we dedicate the H1948 CEHISEANH to her. Ouchl I I These are the exclamations that can be heard from 317 before one of the performances of Central's A Choir. Under the outstanding direction of Miss Arlys Denzel, the Central High School Choir has earned itself the name of one of the very best High School choirs in St. Paul. This year the choir renewed Central's tradition of a Christmas assembly and evening performance for the parents. With the speech department they presented this program which was called Our World at Christmas . They also sang at the Town and Country Club and a small group - sang over XVTCN. ln the spring they participated in the Band Concert. f :'E'iTii'?5- -1-s?: But the greatest event of the year was the presentation of 'iLelawala by Miss Denzel's proteges. Garbed in Indian head- fi-uc dresses and doing everything from war dancing and Hugh ing to marching like soldiers, the choir proved itself to be capable of almost everything. 7542 --: W'-.i-.. BAND One of the largest organizations we have is the Central High School Band. It plays at the football and basketball games boosting the spirit of the players and the students. A few members of the band put on pep fests on days when games are heldg With the lively majorettes, the band certainly helps to put pep into Central. Instead of having the regular officers Mr. Campbell has appointed the following sergeants and corporals to help keep the band in order when they are marching: Frank Windsor, first sergeant, Ben Lenard, second sergeant, Phil Epstein, Roland Anfinson, Randall Taylor, corporals, and Stanley Calvin, librarian. This year the majorettes and flagwavers have done an excellent job. Head major-ette is'Jackie McCormack, and following her are Donna Kennedy, Joyce Faust, June Park, and Fern Anderson. The flagwavers include: Patsy Kelley, Kay Thompson, Sally Graham, and Lorraine Greenberg. The annual band concert was held in the spring as usual. The band played classical and semi-classical music. We are proud of our band, and We have good reason to be. PAGE THIRTY EIGHT 1 BAND BOTTOM ROW-Ben Leonard, John I-Ieimann, Bob Shadur, Dick Greenberg, Bill Costello. This group has a two-fold purpose: firstly, to de- velop a greater apprecia- tion for music, tone, and harmony, and secondly, to act as a reservoir for the senior band. Mr. Campbell care- fully watches the progress of each student. When a member has advanced far enough, he or she is placed in the senior band. Much credit should go to Mr. Campbell. Through his help, many students have had the op- portunity to study music, and to work toward their goal of becoming a mem- ber of the senior band. If you do, slip into 102 during third period, and you'll hear the ,string orchestra giving evidence of its ability to interpret the masters. Besides playing at programs of vario-us organizations, such as P. T. Afs, the orchestra gives an annual concert. This year the program was held December 9. Among the pieces played that evening, were Aria by Tenaglia, Nocturne by Borodine, selections from Chopin, and some light classics. Officers for this year Were: Laverne Calof, president, Marilyn Adelman, librarian, Ted Mackmiller, vice president, and Charles Roth, secretary and teasurer. Just listen in the key-hole of 317 during fifth period, and you'll have this opportunity. The newest organized singing group at Central is the Girls' Cilee Club. They sing both semi- classical and classical music. Under the direction of Miss Arlys Denzel, the results are really beautiful! During the year groups of the girls sang many places in the city, such as Lee's Highland Village Inn, churches and clubs, and at class meetings. They also participated in an assembly program during the year which was certainly a credit to Central. PAGE FORTY-TWO FORTY-EIGHTERS 1. -i and three boys . . . 2. Who sold Hello Day tags to raise money for school improvements? The Student Council, of course. Its many activities including the establishment of self-government in the lunch room and study hall did much to make Central a better place. The Council was advised by Miss Pearle Knight, Miss Irma Meile, and Miss Mary Lou Bryant. Watch out if you've violated any school laws, for the Student Council Court sees that any violators are punished. Under the supervision of Miss Martha Sjoberg, the court holds session once a month. Did Uncle Bill really go to Central for seven years? Who was Grandma going steady with in 1897? All available information about graduates of Central since 1870 is filed by the Historical Society, which also has complete records of all Central publications, such as the Times, World, and Cehisean. In addition, scrap- books are kept which contain programs of Central productions, and placecards and invitations to the various club events. Membership in the Historical Society is based on scholastic achievement. To qualify, a student must have maintained an average of ninety or better and have been recommended by a teacher. In addition to its recording duties, the Society holds a spring frolic near the close of each school year. PAGE FORTY-NINE T -4 ' . .' The Times of course. Besides receiving the George Gallup and N. S. P. A. All-American awards, it also won recognition in state and national T. B. Christ- mas Seal publicity contests, in the local high school nevvspaper contest on the treatment of Brotherhood, and in state and national competition for Brotherhood Week editions of high school papers. Carol Heckman and Ray Reister are co-editors. Miss Olive Allen advises the group. TIMES BUSINESS STAFF The Editorial Staff writes the Times, but without the Business Staff the paper couldn't be published. The members of this staff solicit the ads from St. Paul businessmen: They keep accounts of subscriptions, collect from home room agents, and distribute the paper on Fridaysj Mr. John Ryan is advisor of the club. CEHISEAN STAFF Most students little realize just what is involved in bringing the Cehisean into being. Just ask some of the teachers who were literally chased about their rooms by a madman who turned out to be David Bum- gardner, faculty editor, who was merely trying to take their pictures for his section. Ask the club advisors who were pursued by club editor Joan Johnson, and the members of her staff who were hounded day and night to get their sketches in. Ask the albumn staff, and hear about the screams and dire threats of Jean Gottfried, album section editor. Inquire of a snapshot section member and learn of the desk-and-head-pounding-on by Bob Grochau, who demanded action, and of his pleas to the students to please turn in some material. And don't forget Marilyn Nelson and her two-girl music staff, who are rumored to have established their head- quarters in an empty bass fiddle case in order to have more feeling in their work. Ask any person who had to stand on his head for fifteen minutes while sports editors Jim Ray and Ruth Dobberfuhl decided from which angle the best picture could be taken. The members of the business staff will tell you of their importance, and of business editor Audrey Zack's business-like way of throwing inkwells at them. Speak to just about any red-faced Centralite and learn of the cruelty of Paul Faraci, official photographer, who snapped a picture of him that he'll never be able to explain to Susie. The easiest thing to do, however, would probably be to go up to 323 or 324 and see what it has done to faculty advisors, Amanda Johnson and Sara Ryder, or, if you want blanket coverage of the matter just wander over on publication date and watch the little white wagon drive off with the entire Cehisean staff.
