Mr Albert Meier Principal witnessing most forceful object lessons in the efforts and struggles of our dw-dy mocracy trying to readjust itself after a global war. , A All phases of life are more or less unbalanced, dislocated and out of align- ment. In order to prosecute the grim business of war successfully the national government had to take over powers which now must again be relinquished in order that democracy may again function freely. Young people who are in high 'school during lthese troubled years ar In America the young people have the great good fortune freely to observe and study this complicated process of readjustment and thereby to learn im- , portant lessons for the future, when they themselves will be in positions of authority. , I ' In view of these facts, how encouraging and reassuring it should be to this year's Cehisean improvement, In a of peace. Let us see perform somethin . sh.: have our young people themselves choose as their motto for the words of Daniel Webster, Let our age be the age of day of peace let us advance the arts of peace and the work-s whether we also, in our day and generation, may not worthy to be remembered. With our young people working toward this goal we can surely feel f encouraged about the future of our country. i G. MEIER r A. If so, don't see Mr. Anthony, see your Student Council representative. The Student Council enables the student body to govern itself, The body is made up of a representative from each home room with the officers elected by the entire stu- dent body. The Council supervises many activities such as the selling of season tickets for the football games, Homecoming activities, assembly fund, the bookstore, the Community Chest collection, and many others. In addition to the usual sunlight dances, the group 'sponsored an evening dance in the gym this year. This dance, like all other Student Council projects, was very successful. The Council is advised by Miss Pearle Knight, Miss Irma Meili, and Miss Mary L. Bryant. 1 Bernard Friel, Don Mulligan, Pete Bixby, Donna Sandberg. MRS. TOPDAHL' SPEAKS TO THE SENIORS A free and enlightened youth must realize and understand well the great principles and causes on which that happiness and life depend. Future wars must be prevented and peace and progress promoted, but this will be accomplished only through the training we seek today. We cannot be educated in a postwar world with prewar and outdated thinking. This age 'calls for forward-looking youth who are willing not only to train their minds in scientific and global think- ing but also in spiritual and human understanding. With such training wegwill be better able to meet and conquer the problems of a fost-mov- ing world, thus better preparing our- selves to live happily in peace and to make contributions to an age of im- provementf' Mrs. Topdahl bedicatiQn f High school graduates again are fortunate in having the opportunities of peace offered tio' them. We have been taught the democratic Ways of life. the great principles of equality, freedom, and truth. We have been made to under- standhthe, responsibilitiesiof peace are as 'great as those of war. The challenge of performingwsornethinug Worthy to be remembered has been given us. For helping usmtogrealize both our ,opportunities and our duties we owe a debt of' gratitude 'to'1Vlrs. Manila Topdahl, our class adviser. To her the Class of 1947 dedicates this- year's Cehisean. PAGE SEVEN , PERSONNEL Miss Edith Haigh, director of Student Personnel, and Miss Hilda Ander- son have guided many a senior on the right road to graduation. Miss Laurie Johnson with her fine library staff makes it easier for us to find the books We desire. SOCIAL SCIENCE r With the many post-war problems arising from the past World conflict the various courses in American History, World History, and Social Studies have combined to form a co-ordinated study of world problems and their possible solutions. These courses have provided us with the understanding that We will need in order to take an active part as good citizens in our demo- cratic Way of living. U LANGUAGES Miss Florence Baber, pictured with members of her Latin class, helps them gain a good Latin background to encourage them in studying further Min this field. Her regular school day is filled with English and journalism classes. Besides teaching, English, Miss Marion Munson acts as advisor to the World, the school's literary magazine. Many hours of hard Work are spent on this in order to put out a splendid piece of literary publication. Here she is helping the editors solve their problems. ' ' 1 Mrs. Amanda Johnson. ENGLISH , Doctor, lawyer, merchant, chief, One of these may or may not fit your future position in life, but, Whether it does or not, a good English background is essential for any one of them. We at Central can be proud of our fine English department which offers three differ- ent courses to provide us with one which suits our basic requirements. Miss Marjorie Dornberg heads the speech classes and the radio workshop. The importance of speaking correctly is brought out when students hear the recordings of their voices played back to them. Miss Dornberg also is very active in planning assemblies. va ji. Miss Elizabeth Stroble, our art teacher, is helping pupils from her class prepare a cut for printing. The results of many pupils that she has taught may be seen every day in her classroom. Miss Arlys Denzel, our music teacher, teaches her pupils to appreciate the tonal values of the musical scale. Her fine contralto voice has added much to making our assemblies more enjoyable. PAGE TWELVE l ,Q QQ ,,5b.P, ' .,AA. .,.,,A c . R api M I ,. pp p l Fl' P V l Q W Kfamgihu. Miss Helen Heck. MATH EMATICS For the successful adaptations of math, everyone needs a capable teacher of the subject required. The future of everyone's life of necessity involves a great' deal of mathematical cal- culations and interpretations. In the applications of this, the mathematical department of our school offers to its students the best of opportunities in developing their abilities. SCIENCE Science is the door to the modern way of living, and it's open to all those who are inter- ested in entering into this field. Central offers courses in Chemistry, Physics, and Aeronautics. Each person is required to hand in two pieces of literary Work, one on any subject and one on an assigned subject. Before the judges receive the papers, the names are removed so that the judg- ing will be entirely unbiased. The Literary Club is the organization that puts out the World, Central's literary magazine and incidentally, Central's oldest publication, The World has Won the All-American rating for a great many years, and it will undoubtedly continue to be a top- honor literary publication. Each year a contest is held for the material to be put into the maga- zine. A prize is given to the Writer of the best poem, the best short story, and the best essay. All material is first judged by the club, and they send the best ones on to three adult judges.- These usually consist of the principal of Central, a retired teacher, and a teacher or instructor from a college or the University. The members don't have all work and no play, however. The club usually has at least three social activities during the year, generally consisting of a fall picnic, a Christmas party, and a spring picnic. Miss Marion Munson is their very capable advisor.
