Spelling bees and dunce caps have disappeared and with them has gone the curriculum centered around the three r's. Today our curriculum is expanded. Edu- cators realize that School Days should consist of more than just a classroom and a limited course of study. School life was thus varied with the new, practical studies and the introduc- tion of extra-curricular activities. Reading and writing and 'rithmetic, Taught to the tune of a hickory stick has given way to an enriched course of study. Now we still study the necessary background subjects, but We also enjoy courses an-d activities based upon our tal- ents. ln choosing our theme, the song School Days, we show the richness of our curricular activities and friendships of our leisure moments. We do not recite a history of all high schools, but rather we record the story of our School Days today. In spite of the vast changes made in the high schools, they are still the places for the making of lifelong friendships. Central High's largest senior class in making this yearbook, hopes that it will recall to you your modern School Days of 1939. 'l A 'W Q' 'lg M47 ft if ifggfii Z Q, 3, In obiniugrx toe. Her sense ot humor, her interest in student atfairs, her untail- inq kindness and co-operation have endeared her to everyone coming in con- tact with her. For three years she has been the quidinq force ot our School Days, the sincere friend ot us ati. We dedicate this, the Cehisean ot 1939, to Miss Moe with the sincere hope that it represents our gratitude to her for the unceas, inq interest she has shown. ose. ms otnskslsle-.N Pictured in the upper two snaps are editors oi the 1939 Cehisean. This tall the class elected as its president, Margery Brackg Evelyn Storberq, vice-president: Marie Levie, secretary, and Raymond lacobson was appointed treasurer. ln the sprinq term, the class started planning the most important activity of the year, the Iunior-Senior Prom. Entering in 1936, this year's senior class is the largest ever graduated from Central. The first officers to head the class were Anna Mae Torgerson, president, Doris Bohlig, vice-president: Iean Herrmann, secretary: and Ierry Kennedy, treasurer. When in the spring the adviser, Miss Ruby Moe, was introduced to the group, it was headed by Robert Madsen, presidentg Anna Mae Torgerson, vice-president, Frances Nilsen, secretaryp and Arthur Eggert, treasurer. When the near-1000 students in the class became juniors, they elected Edward Vanl-Iousen, presidentg Mary lane Sweeney, vice-president, lean Herr- mann, secretary, and lrving Tillotson, treasurer. It is customary for the president of the junior class to lead the grand march at the Iunior-Senior Prom, and Irving Tillotson, head of the class for the second semester, had that honor. Other officers for this very important year were Barbara Reynolds, vice-president, Mary lane Sweeney, secretaryp and Arthur Cumming, treasurer. The following fall there had been no great change in the enrollment of the class of 1939. Once again officers were elected, and Arthur Cumming became presidentp Mary lane Sweeney, vice-president: lean Eberhardt, secretary: and lack Bonbright, treasurer. Even more important than the year of the Prom is the last semester of the class in school. The officers for this year must head the plans of the Senior Day and the many commencement activities. Bob Madsen was president for the final term: Dorothy Kulenkamp, vice-president, Dick Anderson, treasurer, and Elsa Ianda, secretary. NORMA AAMODT MOLLY ABRAHAMSON Girls' Leaque. With these activities the students are trained in their chosen fields of workg often persons of ability are discovered in the outside Work. Central's clubs and organizations embracing all fields of endeavor make school a pleasure as well as a good training ground for later lite. lust as the citizens cf this country cherish their personal freedom, so the students of Central cherish their right to govern themselves by conducting a STUDENT CCUNCIL. Each semester students elect home room representatives who in turn name a group of thirty. This year council activities included the bookstore, school improvement projects, the traffic court, sunlite dances, and the cnnual picnic. Most important of its activities is the school improvement project financed mainly by funds earned in the bookstore. This year the council with help of other organizations purchased a movie projector. Patrolling the school halls and grounds, the TRAFFIC SQUAD makes it possible for the majority of students at Central to go about daily Work Without interference. By keeping the grounds clean and lessening hall confusion, Central is made more pleasing to students as well as to visitors. Under the guidance of Mr. Arthur Anderson, the squad efficiently enforces Student Council rules. A Cehisean Committee Gets Down to Work T? I 2 Student Council Vita! lftw' Ml:.:: Milly l. To the university student it is Phi Beta Kappa which rewards him tor out- standing scholarship, service, leadership, and character. To the high school student it is the NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY. Since membership in this society is such an honor, the qualifications tor entrance are rigid. Not only must the student be in the upper third ot his class in scholarship, but he must be outstanding in its other requirements: service, leader- ship, and character. All candidates are nominated and elected by the faculty. Not more than titteen per cent of all the seniors and only tive per cent of the juniors are eligible. The society is now in its fourteenth year of existence. A nationwide organ- ization, it was founded by a group ot secondary school principals. The Central High School chapter this year is under the direction of Miss Edith Haigh, chair- man: Miss Ruby Moe, Miss Grace Borden, Miss Anna Dickson, Mr. Lewis Harns- berger, and Mr. William Bush, treasurer. Seven juniors who were chosen as members in the society last year were lean Eberhardt, Glenn Hanson, Paul Han- scn, Beverly Kaufman, Margaret Kuetfner, Elsabe Luedke, and Robert Madsen. Organized to promote scholarship and to record the history of Central, the HISTORICAL SOCIETY each year admits students who have maintained ex- ceptional scholastic averages. One of the oldest groups of its kind, the society keeps upsto-date files of the achievements of Central and its graduates to serve as a reference source for the school as well as for outsiders. A complete card record of each graduate may loe found in the files. Besides the card records, newspaper clippings are saved to augment the information of the files. The Historical Society also has a complete file of each World, Times, and Cehisean published as well as many programs, tickets, and other rnementos of school functions. Miss Ellen Simon and Miss Claire Boocly direct the activities of the organization. Page 59 Bowling Club First row: Marcia Correll, A. D. White. The purpose of the club was to promote an interest here at Central in bowling and to increase the skill of those interested. Each term a contest is held to determine the school champion and the members of Central's bowling team. The club arranges contests with other clubs an-d schools. Members of the club bowl once a week in the bowling alleys of the Midway Y.M.C.A. This term's officers are: Bob Lawrence, president: ludd Chase, vice-presidenty Mary Helen Seiberg, secretary: and Iames Craig, treasurer. . Due to the tremendous increase of interest in skiing, a number of Central students formed the Central High School SKI CLUB in l937. The members try to go skiing as a group at least once every two weeks during the winter months and also participate in skiing meets with other clubs. The officers for the past year were Gerald Luber, president, Verndale Oathoudt, vice-presidenty Marianne Cary, secretary: and lerome Seward, treasurer. Miss Emma V. Ryan is the adviser oi the club, and Mr. Ferdinand Uebel is the instructor. Membership has been limited to thirty-eight with a greater number ot juniors being admitted. ln this way, the number of seniors and sophomores is balanced, and a good club nucleus is assured for the following season. Formed in 1936 by a group oi boys interested in fencing, the GUARDSMEN, has grown and advanced into a prominent organization. The club has done much to introduce and popularize fencing at Central, and to foster a sense ot fair play among the boys who have taken up the sport. Captained by Russell Ferguson, the competitive team is comprised of Ioe Mayer, lack Beavans, Dick Nielson, and Robert Dampier. The activities of the Guardsmen are under the direction of Mr. Ferdinand Uebel. Matches were held between members and with outside tencers. Every student in the school is given an opportunity to contribute to the publication through the Literary Club contest conducted in the tall. The president first semester was Beverly Fisher and second semester Mildred Carter. The World editor was Mary Ella Goins. The TIMES is Central's newspaper which comes out weekly on Fridays. It contains all news ot interest to high school students, features, sports, and editorials. The Times has received many awards, among them All-Columbian newspaper, Columbia Medalist, and International rating from Quill and Scroll, and an All-American newspaper rating from N.S.P.A. By publishing editorials advocating tolerance among the students the Times established that as its theme. The editorial adviser is Miss Olive Allen. Three departments, advertising, circulation, and otiice work make up the TIMES BUSINESS STAFF, advised by Arthur Anderson. For the tall term the business manager was Pat Cumbey, and for the spring, Howard Frost fills the post. One of the smaller clubs in Central, yet one ot the most active, is the AERO- NAUTICS CLUB. Under the guidance ot Mr. L. H. Harnsloerqer it has met each Friday to learn of the latest advancements in air travel, to discuss the newer developments in the buildinq ot model airplanes, or to take part in informal dis- cussions with experienced pilots. Page 66 niqfzii af Me Nm Central's RADIO CLUB was organized in l9l9 with the double purpose ot furthering interest in amateur radio and helping student amateurs to obtain their federal licenses. A successful crganization, the Radio club now operates the government licensed station WQMQW. The work of the club is conducted behind the physics laboratory where Mr. Clarence Eastman is the adviser. Many of the club members also own and operate their own sets. Each year enthusiam at Central tor chess increases until now the CHESS CLUB has a membership of twenty-five. Tournaments are held within the club and with outside competitors. David Heeter, Bernie Bratter, Dan Magraw, Ray Iacobson, Robert Gove and Bob Madsen comprise the regular team. Bob Madsen won the tall tournament sponsored by the club. The purpose of chess to the student is the pleasure derived from playing the game, and the development oi the powers of concentration, foresight, and con- structive planning. The adviser of the club is Mr. Robert Brockrnan, and Room 209 is headquarters tor the group. These clubs, -designed to encourage students in their particular talents, are representative ot the extra-curricular activity system in Central. Besides pro- viding tun and entertainment during a student's years in high school, Central's organizations are a real training ground for later lite. Thus, with their educa- tional and recreational background, Central's outside activities are a vital part ot high school life. Meetings are held reg- ularly, and matches are held between members. The club is under the super- vision ot Mr. H. H. Smith. To promote interest in stamp collecting and to increase the knowledge ot stamps is the two-told purpose ot the STAMP CLUB. The important activities of the club were an exhibit, an auction, and a contest. The exhibit, held in Novem- ber, consisted ot stamps taken from the collections ot members. Stamps tor the auction were contributed by members, but the sale was open to students outside the club. Mr. Clarence Eastman is the club adviser. Hands Across the Table Page 68 Snap Shots l ist iuw. After the talks, the girls were free to ask questions which Mr. Eastman answered. Virginia Wolfangle, Donna Cummings, Betty Westman, Dorothy Berndt served as president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer respectively for the fall term. With headquarters in the physics laboratory, members of PHOTO ARTS CLUB have become proficient in many forms of photographic art. Regular meet- ings are held which feature instructive programs embracing varied divisions of photography. Movie filming was demonstrated at one of the meetings. Donald Drukey showed the moving pic- tures that he took of the parade in the St. Paul Winter Carnival during February. During the autumn semester the club held a photography contest among the members, and places were awar-ded to the outstanding prints. A number of the members have co-operated with the Cehisean staff in procuring photographs for use in the annual. Mr. Clarence Eastman is the club's adviser. Mr. William Bush directs the activities of the group as adviser. To create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character is the purpose of the HI-Y CLUBS. Governed by the HI-Y Council, composed of all the officers, which determines the joint policy of the clubs, and the outside activities for each club, the groups have carried on many social and philanthropic projects. The 1938 state con- ference was held under the sponsorship of the Central groups, and four repre- sentatives attended the national conference during the summer. Organized by the Y. M. C. A., the clubs have -done a great deal to help children in underprivileged families through Christmas parties and other activ- ities. ln the fall Edward Trumper was president of the CENTRAL HI-Y, the oldest group in the school, and Roger Carlson is the spring term president. With Miss Nellie Mueller as its adviser, the group has grown to be one of the school's outstanding organizations. lts yearly program included a Christmas party, a special spring entertainment to which parents and outsiders are invited, and the traditional spring picnic. Old Roman customs and life form the main study and object ot the LATIN CLUB. The club often has lectures on these subjects, and these are sometimes illustrated with slides. The outstanding event of the year tor this group is their traditional Roman banquet held in the spring. The Central High School DRAMATIC CLUB, un-der the direction of Miss Marjorie Dornberg, has a membership of sixty embryonic Barrymores. This year the club digressed from its usual custom of allowing only juniors and seniors to try out for membership, and as a result, five sophomores were admitted. Tryouts consist of a pantomime and a dramatic reading given before four members of the club and Miss Dornberg. From this group of students the best are picked to fill vacancies caused by graduation. At the meetings this year, many interesting programs were given, consisting of one act plays, readings, and humorous skits presented by club members. PAINT AND PATCHES, under Miss Grace Mackey's expert instruction, meet the first and third Tuesdays of each month to learn the art of make-up. Business and practice meetings are held alternately. During the practice sessions the club has learned many different types of make-up such as Chinese, negro, Turkish, and old age. New members are chosen on a basis of ability displayed in competitive try-outs, and on the basis of character and of scholarship. This year the club madeup the participants in numerous assemblies and programs, among them the Thanksgiving and Christmas assemblies, Glee-Times Follies, and the Band Concert. Twice this year the choir participated in radio programs. ln October the choir was heard in a broadcast over station KSTP and also presented a broad- cast over station WTCN in November. Coached by Mr. Playford Reed, the l938 edition of the baseball team ended their season third in the final standings. The Minutemen opened their season by downing the Humboldt Indians l0 to 7. Next the traditional rival, Mechanics, defeated the Minutemen, 7-2 on Dunning Field. Harding, the next victim, was swamped 9-3 as Newell Olson held the Maroons to six hits. Central lost its next game 5 to 4 to a good Washington club. Central met its third downfall in a tight game with lohnson, 2-l. Mechanics turned in their second victory over Central, 7-4. Bob Polske started his first game and turned in a masterful four-hit shutout against Humboldt, while his mates gathered ten hits and seven runs. Traveling over to South St. Paul, the Red and Black nine nosed out the Packers in a high scoring game, 9-8. In the final game, Washington ran over Central, 10-0. Golf is one of the two minor sports which dropped its regular round-robin inter-high school league. ln its place, a city-wide prep school tournament was added. Playing for the highest honors were stars from every public and private school in the city. Little Spero Daltas, one of the best golfers ever to enter Central, won the tournament in a convincing manner. Other Centralites who played steady golf throughout were Captain Harvey Lewis, a veteran, Bob Lawrence, and Shermann Shultz. ln pre-tournament competition, the Red and Black defeated South St. Paul 12 to 6, with Daltas scoring a low 76. Mechanics was drubbed l6V2 to lV2, with Lewis carding a 77. The next match found U High of Minneapolis downing Central IOV2 to 7V2. Jam,-s - ' Coach White's hockey team finished a busy schedule in third place. Washf ington, twin city champs, defeated the ice-men twice during the race. The steady goal guarding of Norm Zats saved the scores from mounting against the Central aggregation. The Minutemen's record was clouded by l-l ties with lohnson, Humboldt, and Harding. Two white-washings by Humboldt and Washington in the first half of the race were evened up considerably when the teams met again. Central's swimming team captained by Chester Leaman and coached by R. D. Berg had a fairly successful season. Breezing through their conference schedule undefeated, the mermen were downed only by West, the Mill City champions. In the city meet outstanding among the tankmen were Burce Dando, Dick Giedel, Chester Leaman, and Lin Power in the free style events: Gordon Rohrbacher, Carl Swendsen, and Ray Iacobson in the breast stroke: Philander Durkee and Bob Wrinch, backstroke. Central is unique among the high schools in that an athletic board comprised of members of the faculty governs all inter-scholastic and intra-mural sports. All sports are represented on the board by the faculty managers who with the athletic director make up the personnel. Under the direction of Mr. Alfred L. Buser, the program for the year is drawn up and carried out. The receipts from paying sports such as football and basketball are carefully budgeted so as to cover the expenses of the non-paying sports such as swimming, tennis, track, baseball, gym, and golf. lt also awards letters to all athletes and student man- agers meeting certain requirements in the various sports. The officers are Alfred L. Buser, presidentg l. T. McCallum, vice-presidentg A. G. Meier, secretaryg and George Christensen, treasurer. l. T. McCallum is the athletic director, and Albert F. Schwabe is custodian of athletic equipment. The faculty managers are: football, Alfred L. Buser, basketball, l. T. McCallum: track and gym, Frank Gallesy swimming and golf, Robert D. With eight returning lettermen available, one of the strongest and best balanced squads ever to carry the Red and Black colors was molded together. The Minutemen romped through an undefeated season of conference competition gaining victories over Washington, Vlfilson, Murray, Marshall, lohnson, Mechanics, Harding, and Humboldt which was climaxed by a brilliant victory in the city meet at lohnson. With a possible Northwest Class C championship in sight, the Red and Black faltered and suffered an off day, but nevertheless managed to take fourth place, highest of any Saint Paul contender. Stars in this fine aggregation were numerous. Co-captains Bill Arndt and Chuck Boyles were consistently high scorers, and Bill won a medal for placing high in the side horse in the Northwest meet. Others who could be counted on to score many points were Ken Finnesy, captain electy Ken Casselman, Marvin Feldman, Art Eggert, Bob Schaaf, and Richard Spriesterbach. The development of such a team is a tribute to the careful guidance of Coach Galles. Ha: H-index: if Nr - , -....- , I A W G. A. A. The board meets on the first and third Tuesdays of every month during eighth period in the gym with Miss Emma Ryan, girls' gymnasium director. Class team tryouts, hikes, outdoor sports, G. A. A. parties, and indoor sports are all in their care. Each spring an election is held to choose the next year's board. The girls are first nominated by the retiring boar-d and then voted upon by all G. A. A. girls. The present G. A. A. heads are Caryl Vermilya, presidentp Marion English vice-president: and Shirley Howe, secretary-treasurer. ln addition to these executive officers, there are heads for all outdoor sports such as swimming, hiking, golfing, tobogganing, roller skating, and for all gymnasium sports including basketball, fieldball, tennis, kittenball, and volley- ball. It is necessary to have such directors in order to credit the girls with their earned points. Two other members of the board are the girls' sports editor of the Times and the publicity chairman. The referee is an essential part of the -daily routine as she explains, demonstrates, and referees such games as volleyball, handball, deck tennis, shuffleboard, and ping pong. She also helps with exercises which are done at the beginning of each period. At referee meetings, held once a week, these girls learn the rules of the games and the procedure by which to conduct a class. A referee must be passing in all solids and must sign up at the end of a term before she plans to referee. At the .J of the semester she will have taken tests in posture, exercises, handball, and volleyball. She also keeps records of these tests and scores of the games. If she makes a referee notebook, a health poster, and is present at all but three meet- ings, she will receive points toward her letter. Membership in the club is gained by earning 750 points in G. A. A. sports either outdoor or in the gym- nasium. These points are awarded for the number of hours, miles, or lessons in the various sports played. Girls may be active in no more than six sports at a time. The Executive Board of G. A. A. handles the recording of points. Each year several social events are planned by the club for its members. The most important are the card party, the annual business meeting, and the banquet at which the C awards are presented to incoming members and those earning their All-Cities. Every year a senior, junior, and sophomore basketball team is picked, and top honors are awarded to the winners. The seniors were the lucky team this year. Shirley Norquist was the sophomore captain, Marion English was the junior captain, and Betty Emmington led the seniors. lanette Rice was the general head of basketball this year. Fieldball is a game that anyone and everyone can enjoy. This sport starts the fall term of G. A. A. The game is an offspring of soccer except that the ball is thrown instead of kicked. The team con- sists of five forwards, three halfbacks, two fullbacks, and one goal-guard. The fieldball head, Mary Kennedy, held tryouts at the end of the season. She chose judges who in turn picked the senior, junior, and sophomore teams which played in inter-class games. The seniors were captained by Caryl Ver- rnilya, the sophomores by Shirley Nor- quist, and the juniors by Pearle Wiech- man. The seniors emerged victorious. Guard that qirl! Page lOl G. A. A.
