We recall the memories and to our view, Rise the familiar places where we have spent Unforgotten hours striving to be true To our colors flying high without stint. The happy days have swiftly passed, And we must meet the chasms of fate. The mist clears and we learn at last, We must leave dear Central in our wake. Softly the shadows fall and as we stand Swept with majestic curve, the class of '58 The dying flame leaves and unfettered hand Harken to the opportunities for us await. Spivey On the third day of Sept. , 1954, approximately l25 green and inexperienced, but ambitious, Freshmen entered the portals of Cen- tral High. Our class was under the leadership of Joe Allison, and our sponsor was Mr. Fowler Clark. After spending nine months as green Freshmen, we were thoro- ughly initiated into the practices of a true Cavalier and became solemn Sophomores. This year Mr. Fowler Clark succeeded Mr. W. M. Davis as principal. As Sophomores we took more interest in school activities. We were under the leadership of Mrs. John Holladay and Mr. H. S. Clinton. Sammy Brown, who was elected Pres., later left school. The responsibility then rested upon Jimmy Dicus, our Vice-president. Then we became jolly Juniors. Our number had fallento seven- ty students. We started with more zeal with Bobby Wright as our President. This year Misses Sue Ray Garlen and Billie Scott were chosen as our sponsors. Betty May of Missouri was added to our class. All other activities of the year were overshadowed by the presentation of the play, Bashful Bobby, givenby the Junior class The Proceeds went to finance the Junior-Senior banquet. Now we become Seniors, the goal we had long sought for. We put away all things unbecoming to our newly acquired dignity. Again 'Bobby Wright was chosen as President and Miss Pauline Hud- gens and Mr. David R. Terry were chosen as sponsors. The Senior play, Lindy Lou, a comedy drama, was given March 18. It was dir- ected by Miss Pauline Hudgens and the proceeds were used to fin- ance the annual. The graduation exercises will end the high school careers of' Seniors of which only 55 are of the original 125. Throughout all of our high school work we have witnessed many things which will always remain in our minds as pleasant memories of Central High. To the kind and understanding faculty, to Mr. Davis,a.nd Mr. Clark we owe much more than mere gratitude. To us the memory of everyone we have had the pleasure of knowing shall remain as we go forward to seek higher goals in life. 20 I Y ' ' The 1938 Qlahalisr crass win. D . HIGH COACH 51 The 1938 Qiahalier FOOTBALL HISTORY In September the chances for a winning team at Central were good, with eleven letter men returning. Thirty men were present at the first practice. On the 17th of Sept. twenty-two condition- ed boys boarded Haney's bus for Gallatin with great hopes for vic- tory. The boys returned with a 15-O defeat. The following Friday Central went to Gordonsville and lost 6-O. One week later Central's football started on an upward grade, when they held Livingston's Conference champs to a 6-6 tie. The following week they swamped Gainesboro 28-O. Central defeated Carthage Oct. 22, to the tune of 15-O, this being the first time in history that Central had reigned victorious over Carthage. The next two games were lost away from home. The next week we were surprised with a victory over Smithville. The annual game with Baxter was played at T. P. I. stadium. This was one of the most thrilling games of the season with a victory of 7-O for Central. After the game, the Girl Reserves gave a banquet for the winning team. Thus ended the most successful year of football Central has ever witnessed. CLASS TOURNAMENT One of the most interesting events at Central each year is the class tournament. This year the Senior girls were defeated in the finals by the Junior girls. The Senior boys were very vic- torious in the tournament, over-running the other classes by a large score. Quite a bit of material was found in this tournament for next years team and it is hoped that we will again have a championship team. 52 'SZ' The 1938 Qlahalieg W-WA IZ L... These boys have played some of the best basketball that has been played in the last few years. Central was defeated by' Carthage in the District Tour- nament. The girls were defeated in the first game of the regional tournament, held at Murfreesboro, by Bodenham, who eventually won the tour- nament. Dimple Webb and Geda Gill were placed on the all district tournament team as guard and forward respectivelyl Hoosier and Bockman making the second team. The prospect for next years team is very good as we lose only four Seniors. 55 The 1938 Qtahalier CLASS PROPHESY Charles Holladay I got out of the ditch with as much dignity asI could consid- ering the fact that I had just been kicked off of a freight train by the only woman brakeman, she 'was Frances Maxwell. I looked around and saw that I was somewhere between .Algood and Shake Rag. I walked to the highway and just as I started toward Cookeville Billy Kellogg passed. me. He stopped the car and I got in. In talking to him I learned that he had charge of a paper route in Algood. we talked about people we had known at Central. He said Ira Winningham was the principal and'Willene Grimsley was his sec- retary. Ira also handed out three day suspensions easily. Other teachers at Central were Geraldine Paris for shorthand, Ray Buss- ell, history and English, Marie Phillips art. Elizabeth Carlen was using her great mind teaching French. Pete Gracey had succeed- ed Doc High as head football coach and he said prospects were fine among the Freshmen for a great team. When we reached the square I got out and the first thing I saw a sign proclaiming that Joe Allison was the best shyster law- yer in Putnam County. On another side of the square I saw a large dog wagon. When I walked over I saw' that Mary Ruth Judd was run- ning it. She said that she owned two more, one in the hollow and another on the west side. Harriett Boatman and Anna Ruth Ford were running them. Mary Ruth said that Dimple Webb and Pearl Bockman were running the post office at Double Springs and the government was about to get them for steaming open the envelopes. Dimple ask- ed the post office inspector where she could get her news if she didn't open the envelopes? He told her to subscribe to the Salem Gazette edited by James Morris. He said an article of interest to her would be Your Baby and Mine by Virginia Burton. Geraldine Terry also reported on the paper. In the last issue she had writ ten an interesting article about a dog fight. After talking with. Mary Ruth a little longer I started out Dixie Avenue. A car stopped and somebody asked if I wantedto ride. When I got in I saw it was Peggy Howard driving a taxi between T. P. I. and town. I got out where Phillip's store had been. It was now' mwned by' Jimmy Dicus and didn't have anything in it but slot machines of the type that you can't win. In the back L. Ger- aldine Terry was frying hamburgers made out of an old cow that Di- cus had seen a train kill. Jimmy told me a lot of gossip. Lloyd Hayrake Knight was running a chicken farm and getting lots of eggs from roosters. James Crawfordwas judging cattle at Skunk Hol- lowy Houston Boyd was running a goat farm. Mary Sue Cummins was a great artist specializing in pictures of fried eggs. David Aken was running a place called Dr. Ramedy's Hospital. Olivia Minor and Leron Hickey were running a beauty salon.' He had been elected to a high office in the National .Assoc- iation of Bums, because of his high qualifications. Billy Cox and Catherine Reeves were married and living on love. Lillard McDon- ald was the newly elected sheriff. Alva K. Warren was his dieti- cian and fed the guest on friend chicken and chocolate pie. Howard Burgess was the chief fee grabber. Jessie Lee Smith was a J. P. Jimmie and I came to town. As we got to the square, Jim Dyer and Jane Cooke passed us in a big Packard. At the picture show owned by Ella V. McCaleb the feature picture was starring Hammock Wall and Bricie Walker in The Loves of a Man About Town featuring the true experiences of Clebourne Stewart. The chorus girls were Louise Bates, Jessie L. Bilbrey, Essie Luke, and Mary Ruth Murphy The director of the picture was Mary Elizabeth Smart. As I walked down the street on the West Side I saw Odell Huddleston on the street corner selling fountain pens. He said Albert Mott was running a chicken business and doing his own book- keeping. In a drugstore I saw Betty May and Ola Grace Brown who were jerking sodas. A book on the counter was called Poems of Beauty by Dorcas Kirby and Clara Maynard. Betty said that Buford Johnson was driving a school bus and his wife Margie Brown was working their farm. I was standing on the corner when James Crowley walked by. He said he was going to preside at a wedding. He was the pastor of the Mount Herman Church. When we got to the church there was a big crowd there. The organist started playing and as I looked it was Milbra Spivey. Then Nellie Mott started singing a solo. As the bride walked down the aisle I saw it was Rosemary Piepmeier who was going to the alter with Charles Stanton. After the wedding I strolled out of the church and stood a- round a few minutes. The topic of conversation was the divorce case of Mr. and Mrs. Max Sawyer, Mrs. Sawyer was the former S. E. Wilhite. It seemed she had thrown cans of tomatoes at him. The judge, Squire Mitchell, granted the divorce because he said that he knew how hen pecked husbands were. At the New Municipal Airport in Cookeville I saw Gertrude Sliger and Louise Wright selling chewing gum and cigarettes. A plane had just landed. The pilot Frank Moss kicked a stoway off. It was Kate Essex who had gone from bad to worse since John Rid had left her. Adell Thompson was the stewardess. Stella Bussell, Ruby Lee Crabtree, and Margaret Wilhite were on their way to South America to start a war. They said their husbands didn't put up a big enough fight for them. On the way back into town I stopped at a carnival. Myrtle Pharris was selling tickets to the ferris Wheel and Nell McCormick was running it. A Sideshow was run by Juanita Jackson. Lucille Farley, Maylean Mayberry and Elise Mitchell were the main attract- ions. They did a fan dance. Bennett Travis was their manager. As I walked out of the grounds I saw Bobby Wright setting up pins in a bowling alley. I had to hurry to catch the next freight train out of town so I only waved to him and ran. I barely made it and was I glad to get out of that town there were too many there and I was afraid somebody would offer me a job. 54 Hn.. f U -EATMREE 5 N ,if Efxx S Y f f Sw f X 51 W X v Q1 MY f M X K ' Wf f,i, f 5 , W M6 Q QD WW Ghz 1938 Qliahalier VALEDICTORIAN ELIZABETH CARLEN SALUTATORIAN MARY RUTH JUDD 56 ...-..L..
