Being just This Side of Innocence, we were be- wildered by the activities of enrolling and fascinated by the new sound system. To begin our activities at Central, we elected John Brown as our class president. To start the year off right, the student council gave a sock-hop in our honor. In our junior year, we were led by Marvin Gerson and john Brown. One of the highlights of the school year was our junior play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. Another big event was the junior-Senior Prom, planned and financed by the junior class. Our junior year was certainly a big success, and what's more, we still had our senior year to look forward to! In the fall of 1950, we returned to Central with the wonderful feeling that at last the big year was here! We were seniors, and in the spring, during Commencement Week, we could stop and Rest and Be Thankful for our three won- derful years at good old O. H. S. Sam Thompson, serving as our class president both semesters, led the class through our many and varied activities. The junior-Senior Prom was a great success, and the last two weeks of May were filled with our senior play, senior assembly, and Commencement exercises. Yes, our senior year was certainly glorious, and a year we will always remember. We started our second year with Great Expectations, discovering new talents and interests in our own groups. We continued making our classes and school better by re-electing Ronnie Browning and Alpha Sowards as presidents. We were especially proud of the junior sportsmen who have helped to better our teams and win athletic honors. Of the four major queens that Central has had this year, two have been juniors, Barbara Miller, the Band Queen, ind Di Anne Greenberg, the Basketball Queen. Our junior play was magnificent with Nancy Poston, Virginia Davis, and Gene Kanaly in the leading roles of Cheaper by the Dozen. Concluding this year has been a hard thing to do, but in no better way could this be done than with the junior- Senior Prom, the perfect climax. Jacobson. Charles Linton, end, was the first Cardinal to make lineman-of-the-week. He was selected for the title because of his defensive game against the Norman Tiger5. In that battle Charlie recovered three fumbles. jerry Churchill was the only senior center on last year's squad. He had the distinc- tion of being named as team captain for the 1950 season. The Shawnee game was jerry's best performance of the year, as he showed his true defensive and offensive abilities in the 48 minutes that he participated. Buddy Blott stood as the Redbirds' largest lineman with a gross weight of 215 pounds. Buddy went out for football in iunior hi h school and showed the quali- ties of an outstanding tackle. This year he proves his abilities and next year will probably show more. Coach Earl Applebee. Ronnie Cordell reaped all-city, all-district, and all-state honors in '50 to become the second end from Central in two years to take the position. iln 1949 Charlie johnson was selected.J Although ham ered by a severely twisted ankle, Ronnie continued to give the opponents trougle defensively and offensively. He caught six passes to lead the other ends in that department. Bill Finley was the most underrated tackle in the city last year. He seldom missed a tackle, as his opponents will grant. The 195 pounder was also the first Central football to play the full 48 minutes last year. Delbert McNabb, another guard, never received any limelight throughout the season. However, Delbert's teammates fully realized his ability, as they grandly dubbed him Old Reliable. Morris Taylor was the deadliest defensive halfback the Cardinals possessed last year. His menacing shoe-string tackles put quite a few opponents out of the games. However, Morris did have offensive talent, too. Against Enid, Taylor scored the winning touchdown. LeRoy Wilder, junior halfback, was Parris' understudy last year. The Penguin romped for one touchdown, a 54 yarder, for his only scoring. His last year should be a good one. Howard Parris led all Central backs in scoring -with sevenltouchdowns. His biggest night was against Tulsa Central when he tallied three times. Chief was selected to the secon string all-city squad, and to the all-district team. jack Hodges finished his second Lear as Central's first string fullback. When jack wasn't reeling off long yardage, e was handling the team's gunting chores. Jack captured the second string all-city spot in his last year of foot all for Central. jim Stavros was the Cards' all-city, all-district guard and defensive signal caller. The Greek god's sparkling, offensive play against the Tulsa Central Braves Won him the lineman-of-the-week onor. Darrell Pierce recovered from a bad knee that he received last year in time-to quarterback the Cards this year. Darrell starred in every game, but his fine running in the Norman and Enid games highlighted his football season. l.eon Godwin started regular duty when McNabb fell ill just before theAEnid game. During that time, Leon very capably patrolled the guard spot. Exceptionally fast, Godwin merits praise as he relentlessly hauled down opposing backs from behind. Larry Adair lettered his sophomore year as a defensive tackle, but last season as a junior, he saw both offensive and defensive duty. His senior year in football should be a memorable one for Central. Bill Sebring missed the last three games on last year's schedule. The tall end was laid up with a stiff charleyhorse that refused to go awa . At Enid, Bill was a major figure in the OHS victory, as he continually stopped, all end runs that were attempted by the Plainsmen. W aa tw! an lie' aa i 52 ff., A ., we W P- r a I rf . ,,,' ,. FOCTB LL Paul Boynton played every position in the backfield in '50, but he saw most action as a halfback. In 1949 Paul went out for quarterback and played that positron on the B team. Fred Cofer, after playing in the seven first games of the season, was injured in a scrimmage and saw the rest of the schedule on crutches, A guard, Freddie had the distinction of catchin-g a pass thrown by his guarterback for an eleven-yard gain. The infraction was never detected, much to Fre die's delight. Don Woods suffered a broken leg in the earl? season's play, but returned in time to help Central in the Classen contest. Six eet, and 207 pounds, Don was the Redbirds' largest tackle. Louis Antonio, only returning center, played behind Churchill all year, except in the Chickasha game, which he started. Louis was bothered by ha bad shoulder that kept slipping out of place during the season, because of this injury Louis saw more experience as an offensive center than as a linebacker. Coach E. H. Miles. Don Perry, sophomore quarterback, has two more years at' Central and they are sure to be great ones. His most glaring play came in the Chrckasha loss. Don took a kickoff on his own ten yard line an ran it back to the Chicks' thirty. Bob Smith capitalized on his ability as a defensive end and marked ug many quar- ters protecting his end. fwhoops! That one sllppedl. In track, ob runs the huriilcles, but next year Central expects even more from Bob in football than in trac . Evert Dunlap, junior tackle, was the fastest tackle on- the squad and was used largely on kickoffs. Redbird fans expect a big year from Evert in 1951. Pete Pagonis, manager, spent his first year at the manager post. Pete displayed great skill at handling the team's needs. Kenneth Wind, junior end, played his most effective ball against the Tulsa Central Braves. Time after time, Kenneth raced through the Tulsa defense to tackle the ball carrier yards behind the line of scrimmage. Harley Bradshaw displayed his potentialities in the season's opener at Duncan. He scooted for long runs of 35 and 46 yards, from his halfback post. He broke his collarbonepimmediately after the Duncan game, and was unable to play any more. Harley is just a junior. David Hodges, smallest man on the team with 128 pounds, saw duty as quarterback for his second straight year. Although he didn't score a T. D. last year, David engineered many of the six-pointers with his signal calling. Don -Davis was one of the Cards' fastest ends. The tall blonde track man was used especially on kickoffs, because of his speed. Centralites expect a good year from Don next season. Bill james, quarterback, is but a sophomore and will be back for two more seasons of football as a quarterback. The soph didn't get in too much game time, but he did show great possibilities. Jim Rogers, trainer, completed his second year in this position. jim, a really fine fellow and the team's moral support will go far in his training career. Jack Lowman played halfback in 1949, but last year he was switched to the fullback slot because the team had no reserve fullbacks. jack shone brilliantly in the Chick- asha game for his season's best effort. Tom Griffin was used sparingly last year, but he starred as a defensive player because of his exceptional speed. He was largely responsible for the Northeast victory, as he stopped a potential touchdown run just as the half was ending. Ralph Floyd went out for football later than any other varsity player, but saw action in practically all the games that he suited up for. Coach Jacobson used Ralph as a tackle or as a guard frequently throughout the schedule. f BASKETBALL Coach Clarence Breithaupt. Sam Thompson, ace Card center, was the city's leading point maker with a potent 19 points per game average. Sizzlin' Sam was one of the state's finest offensive players. Central was proud to have Sam on the all-city and all-district teams. john Brown, one of the four seniors on the squad, was a two-year letter- man. He was captain of the 'Cardinal team and was one of the outstanding defensive players. john was hampered all season by a bad kidney which was injured in football. Bill Coffman, forward for the Cardinal five, is a constant threat with his deadly jump shots. Bill, playing his first year, shows great promise and should do well next year. Jim Brockhaus, a Card reserve, was a deadly two-handed shooter. He is also a star pitcher for the baseball team. His last-second basket from mid- court, in the Regionals final with Classen, sent Central into the state tournament. jack Hodges, known by all as jarrin' jack for his tremendous ability to rebound, was one of the team's sparkplugs. jack, a Card footballer, played his first year for the roundballers at forward. Sam Folsom was the team's defensive star. It was old Sam who took the opponents' aces and blanketed them. Sam, a guard, will be back next season and is expected to help carry the load. A good rebounder for his size, he will be back next year to boost the team. Ronnie Browning, although being a reserve, saw action in almost every game. He is a real hustler and should help the Cards next season at the forward spot. Trainer Jimmy Rogers. Ray Brooks, a sophomore guard, is expected to help the Cards for the next two seasons. Ray is exceptionally fast and uses his speed to good advantage. Bill Beard played for both A and B teams this year. Bill, only a junior, should take over the center chores next season. Charles W'entworth's first year out he hustled his way into a reserve spot on Coach Breithaupt's Cardinal five. Fay Dunbar, a transfer from Mustang, showed great promise by making the squad at mid-season. Fay, a junior, should be a great help to the team next year. The whiz kids of Coach Earl Applebee came through City and Mid-State play with only two setbacks, but were beaten in the Regional semi-finals to have their bid for a State Championship halted. Coach Applebee started the season with only eight lettermen, two of whom were regulars, but his young kids came through, with veteran outfielder J. F. Leeper leading the way by hitting a lofty A13, which earned him an All-State berth. It is now claimed that they are the oldest Pep Club west of the Mississippi. The club's main purpose is to create pep at all of the games, but more than that, it is also a social club. Each year the Red Shirts put on a Minstrel, the proceeds being used to buy something for the school as well as to buy books for the library in memory of Central boys killed in World War II. The club sponsors all bus trips for out-of-town games. Each year the members have a Christmas dance and a spring dance, at each of which a sweetheart is announced. This year for the first semester it was cute Nakita Lester, and the second semester it was darling Lila Johnson. The Red Shirts are all for Central High School, and they believe in all of the traditions and ideals.
