Dedication OR forty-three years the Flight of the Cardinal has left a wake brilliant with achievements. This, the forty-fourth year, which is now ending, has been as colorful as the previous ones. This annual, acting as a resume of the past year, will recall to the minds of the seniors the glorious days spent in Central, which to many of them represents the last milestone, Because of this, we exhort you who are yet to come to uphold the standards set by your predecessors, walk with an even tread, forever keeping before you the banner of the Red and Black which has so long led those who have conquered. So it is that we dedicate this, the forty-fourth year, as represented in this book, to the Flight of the Cardinal. w 1 , ., 's 5 5' 2 F , ii za , E April l7, l936 To the Graduates of Central High School: My sincere congratulations to you on your graduation from Central High School. This is no mean accomplishment and l feel sure it will be but the beginning of a more abundant life for each of you. Sincerely, C. K. RElFFg Superintendent City Schools Ultimate Happiness Ultimate happiness-that is the goal for which every normal human strives. lt is a just goal. lts attainment is the motivating power back of all humanity. No one individual probably could pre- scribe for the ultimate happiness of any other person. There are, however, some factors that make for ultimate happiness. We must strive for the objective we have set up in life. We must expect reversals. We must even expect defeats, but those very defeats must be accepted in a philosophical manner. They mustf spur us on to even greater effort and achievement. l wish for you seniors--each of you-the ultimate happiness that can be yours if your thinking be right-if your attitude toward life be right-if your conception of the worthwhile things in life be right. Heretofore our goodbyes have been for only three months until we could again declare how joyed we were at being able to partake of the thousands of activities of this noble institution. Last year, as the Junior Class, we bid our superiors adieu. Now it is we who are being ushered out. In retrospect of our activities, we see The Big Pond which we produced in l934, and rising to a climax was the admirable produc- tion of Mrs Moonlight. We must now bid farewell to the Senior Class who for these years past have been such good friends and such able leaders. We, the undergraduates, express the hope that we will be able to add as many feathers to the Central Cardinal as the graduating class of l936. For- the present we have only the Junior Class Play, Big Hearted Herbert and our whole-hearted support of all school activities to submit as feathers, but in the years to come we hope and expect to add many others worthy of being added to lCentral's record. In i925 Miss Beryl Barnett became sponsor, Under her supervision, the weekly paper has been among the toppers in local, state, and national contests. The Sooner Spirit was the first regularly published student newspaper in the state and still ranks high as to content, circulation, and records. News runs are covered by the journalism class and edited by the staff composed of the students having finished the one-year course and the outstanding second- semester students. Mr. C. Guy Brown is in charge of the business staff with Mr. Bruce Holmes handling the advertising class. DEBATE SQUAD First row: Joe Roberts, Amzie Strickland, Pat Caldwell, Coach Harold Netherton, Marjorie Moody, Margaret Lacy, Lois Ann Tighe. Second row: Barbara Germany, Clarabeth Holt, Jane Merritt, James Goodwin. Third row: J, B, Sanders, John E, Howard, Edgar Driver, Erwin Alpern. Forensics is the only school activity which extends over o period ot seven months. The record of achievement for this year's debate squad is representative of the fine progress so characteristic ot the teams of the past. ln the lost few years, teams from Central have made admirable showings in the annual national debate tournaments, winning two ot them. lt is because ot the enviable record Central has established in these tournaments that the nation- al tournament was held in Oklahoma City this year. Last October the Pan Americans gave a dinner at the Y. W. C. A. with representatives from all the city chapters. Central's Hi-Y Club, under the leadership of Bruce Holmes, gave their annual Father-Son Banquet in the cafeteria on November twelfth. The principal speaker was C. K. Reiff, and the color scheme was in the brilliant colors of autumn. The annual Hi-Y-G. R. Banquet was held this year at the Y. W. C. A. Adhering to precedent, the Jeffersonians had a stag banquet in the Colonial Room of the Skirvin Hotel. Dr. Walter Miles was the principal speaker, and George Massey was the master of ceremonies. The tables were decorated with the club colors. ln connection with the Honor Society initiation, the Student Council gave the members of the Society a banquet in the cafeteria. The color scheme was blue and silver, the theme of the evening was Anchors Aweigh , and the principal speakers were E. R. Sifert and the president of the Society. FOOTBALL Under the tutelage of a new coach, Dale Arbuckle, the Central Car- dinals rose to new heights during the football season of l935. Coach Ar- buckle came from Duncan highschool with an enviable record and continued it with the red-clad Cardinal machine. Nine wins, two losses, and no ties were the count after the smoke of eleven battles had cleared away. Led by Winifred Weenie Bynum, named All-State fullback, the Cards trampled all opposition with two ex- ceptions. They proved to be one of the best defensive clubs in the state, no opponent scoring more than seven points, and on the offensive were held scoreless in their two losses only. ln a return engagement with Sunset highschool of Dallas the Car- dinals opened the season with an impressive Zl -O win over the Texas boys. Bynum starred, scoring l5 of the Card's points, with John Shirk, burly end of the Cards, tallying the other touchdown. The next weekend saw the Cards go down to defeat by a 2-O score before the rampaging Pauls Valley Panthers, who were later named with Norman state champions. Arkansas furnished the opposition in the form of the Little Rock Tigers the next week, but all that team received for its trouble and trip was a sound 25-7 lacing from the Cards. l larr Miskovslgv, little back- field dynamite, exploded in this game scoring two touchdowns ile Bynum and Shirk scored the other two. The Enid Plainsmen were the next invaders and felt the fury of the Cards to the sad tune of a 33-O licking. The Cards scored at will, with Coach Arbuckle sending in the second and third string teams many times. ln the ninth meeting of the Classen Comets and the Cards, traditional rivals in every sport, the Cards showed l2,000 yelling fans what their power was. Both teams were on edge at the start of the game and a Classen fum- ble on the kickoff paved the way for the first Redbird score. Bynum scored and converted the extra point and the Cards led 7-O. But near the end of the first period, Classen staged a drive down the field which culminated in a score. But the try failed and the score stood 7-6. The Cards added Page One Hundred Seventee FOOTBALL to their total with a field goal by Bynum in the second period. Again in the third period the Cards scored with Bynum again carrying the ball after alert Bob Egbert had intercepted a pass. Pitted against a heavier team the next week, and playing in a veritable sea of mud the Cards suffered their last defeat of the season 7-O at the hands of the Chickasha Chicks. The previous year's champions were the opposition for the next week when the Capitol Hill Redskins entered the happy hunting grounds of Taft stadium. Led again by Weenie Bynum the Cards won their first city championship in seven years when they downed the Redskins by a 9-O score. Bynum took a punt on his own forty yard line just as the gun signalling the end of the half sounded. Completing the play, although the period was officially over, Weenie ran 60 yards for the only touch- down of the game. ln their annual Armistice day battle with the Tulsa Braves, played in weather resembling that of winter, the Cards took Tulsa by 7-O. lt was a game of Bynum against Dave Egbert, all-state back from Tulsa, with Weenie scoring the only touchdown of the game. Facing the hungry Shawnee Wolves, the Cards disposed of them with a l3-6 game. This was one game in which Bynum did not score a touch- down although he was instrumental in the manufacturing of one. The two Cardinal touchdowns were scored by Harold Lahar, tackle, who re- covered a fumble over the goal line, and by John Shirk on a pass from Bynum. The Cards trounced the Guthrie Bluejays by the same score as that of the year before when they won 25-O at Guthrie. George Tiefel scored two touchdowns with Bynum and Shirk scoring the other two. ln their final game of the season the Cards enjoyed a good Thanks- giving feast, not of turkey, but Henryetta Hens, who were victims of a 20-O slaughter. The Cards won the city championship, placed second in the Mid-State, and first in the Central conference for the number of games played. Bynum was placed on the all-state football team, Shirk on the third team, with Tannell Shadid and George Wilhelm getting honorable mention. Pa O Hundred Eighteen N. s S BAS Kenneth De Cordova, Allie Payne, John Palmer, Ernie Holcomb, T. P. Hunter, Bill Maddox, Bill Stammer, Buddy Rea, Tommy Wilson, Bill Chaney, Coach Clarence Breithaupt. Cardinal basketball enjoyed only a mediocre season this year, the team win- ning l2 and losing 7. They placed fourth in the Mid-State Conference race and failed to place in the district play of the state tournament. Coach Clarence Breithaupt had only one regular, who played full time on the team of the year before, in Billy Maddox. Tommy Wilson, who was developing rapidly into the ,best guard in the City, broke an arm early in the season but re- turned near the end of the season. ln Kenneth DeCordova, Coach Breithaupt had the most versatile player on the team. He played center, guard, or forward. The only Cardinal to place on the all-city team was lrwin Buddy Rea, who led the Card scorers and was the outstanding player on the squad. Lettermen were Irwin Rea, Kenneth DeCordova, T. P. Hunter, Tommy Wilson, Bill Maddox, Bill Chaney, Lester Pojezny, Bill Stammer, Melvin Paine, and Ernest Holcomb. TRACK Coaching the track team in his last year at Central, Ralph Higgins turned out the finest team that Central had seen in many moons. Outstanding especially were the dashes, relays, and long runs. ln the dashes Paul Sanders had no equal in the state. Bob Wingfield kept him stepping though as a member of his own squad. Sanders, elected track captain, also was the finest in the 440 yard dash, and 220 yard dash. ln addition he ran a quarter in the mile relay team. ln the Norman meet, which the Cards won, scoring 45 points to head their arch rivals from Tulsa who piled up only 23 points, Sanders was high point man with l6M points. The next week at Stillwater in a close race with Tulsa the Cards lost 563A to 5516. The meet was run in a cold rain. Hundred Twenty c The relay team of Wingfield, Sanders, Holcomb, and Bell set new marks in the mile at practically every meet they attended. The track team also won the O. B. U. relays, the O. C. U. invitational meet, the city meet, and practically every other meet entered. Lettermen were: Paul Sanders, Billy Bell, Bob Wingfield, Jack Dautel, Joe McClain, Bob Andrews, George Wilhelm, John Mitchell, Gaither Bynum, Ronald Fergerson, Billy Ayers, Jesse Holcomb, Carl Woolley, and Romus Shadid. This year the Cords show promise of having an equally good team under the tutelage of D. B. Pack. They won the Murray Aggie meet in which John Shirk set a new record in the discus and Bob Wingfield was high point man in an addition to setting a new record. They also won the Bison Relays, O. C. U. Invitational Meet, the Mid-State, and placed second in the Tonkawa meet, BASEBALL State champions at the start of the season, the Central baseball team played any- thing but a winning brand of ball. ln fact, the team played so poorly that by the time the state tournament at Norman come around Coach Lewis Squee Braden told the boys he wouldn't take them to the tournament because of their poor showing in the past. This seemed an incentive to the club and although they did not win at Norman, the following week they copped the Stillwater crown. As Classen was the Norman victor a playoff was held to decide the state cham- pionship. At Texas League park the Cards trounced the Comets in Z out of 3 games to again stay at the top of state baseball. The pitchers who carried the brunt of the burden were Alex Weldon and Roy Midkiff who hurled sterling ball the entire season. Lettermen were: Beans Russell, Roy Midkiff, Alex VVeldon, Frank Binda, Hugh McCullough, Frank Dishman, Billy Maddox, Bernard Schmidt, Harry Miskovsky, Francis Casey, Melvin Paine, and Roy Jones, D Page One Hundred Twenty-One TENNIS - GOLF TENNIS: Guy Mitchell, Ralph Boyte GOLF-First row: John Stammer, Elwood Ecton, Coach Sayre, Heldridge Hedge. They won the Mid-State title over Classen and Shawnee. The team was composed of Billy Murray, Ed Sinclair, W. B. Clayton, Elwood Ecton, and Kelley Owen. ln tennis the Cards did not fare so well. They did not win any tour- naments but always put up a game fight. Central's players were Dean Johnson, Casper Watkins, Ralph Boyte, and John Townsend. The doubles combination of Higgins-Boyte have been successful thus far in the season. This double combination went to the semi-finals in a tournament held recently at Tulsa where four states were entered. ln singles Tommy Higgins has done very well. Advancing to the quarter- finals at Tulsa and the finals in the city tournament held here, where George Counts defeated him in a hard match. l-le had previously defeated Ralph Boyte, Central's number two man. Third row: Cary Kirk Partain, Genada Bynum, Gladys Haywood, Margaret Elmore, Emma Sue Welch. SWIMMING First row: Marian Loomis, Emily Powers, Margaret Prock, Zadean Clark, Mary Margaret Stemen. . Second row: Gladys Mooney, Shirley Redman, Jessie Mae Atkinson, Faye Goff, Dorothy Scott. Third row: Betty June New, Olive Wilson, Barbara Germany, Yvonne Blount, Juanita Foree, Lois Wilson. Baseball this year is to be for the enjoyment of the players themselves. The different school play-days are the only competition games, but at such times the team shows its Central spirit. Five girls who made letters last year, are returning and with the excellent material among the others coming out, the team is expecting a good season. Louise Lloyd, a sure catch, is to cover first base, and Gladys l-laywood, last year's pitcher, will adequately till the some position this season. Ruby Blasingame will take third base and show how a real Centralite plays baseball. Dorothy Watson and Margaret Porter are the other two returning players and are expected to play second shortstop and center field, respectively. Among the new players, Lorraine Sherwood and Zadean Clark are outstanding, and Marian Loomis follows her sister's footsteps to make a good baseball player for Central. Dolly Mayhew, Margaret Elmore, Fay Goff, Virginia Morris, and other new girls will help to win games for Central this season. Page One Hundred Twenty-Four VOLLEYBALL First row: Margaret Porter, Ruby Blasingame, Rosie Wein, Marian Loomis, Yvonne Blount. Second row: Dolly Mayhew, Louise Lloyd, Margaret Elmore, Cory Partain. Third row: Glayds Haywood, Coach Kathryn Norris, Genada Bynum. ln the bright red satin Cardinal suits the volleyball team this year enjoyed a good season. Although there was no city championship at stake, the different invitation games and play-days were entered with the some tight and zest it takes to win tor Central. There was much material to use this year, and with the splendid coaching of Kathryn Norris and the new assistant, Gwen Wilson, a fine team was developed. Gladys Haywood could be depended upon for serves or for any posi- tion, and Cary Kirk Portain, better known as Corky , was the sure kill at the net. Ruby Blasingame and Rosetta Wein, although small, did well in all the games. This was Rosie's first year. Genada Bynum, Phyllis Casey, and Margaret Porter made letters last year, and were all-around players. Yvonne Blount, transferred from Capitol Hill, was an excellent addition to the team. Louise Lloyd, a new player, though experienced in other forms of athletics, was consistently good in setting up for a kill at the net. Marian Loomis, Dolly Mayhew, and Margaret Elmore were all new girls, but proved to be invaluable on this year's Cardinal volleyball team. lt has been a wonderful year for the development of the girls on the team, which, after all, is the ideal of Central High School athletics.
