FOREWORD This year is one of the most fateful years in the history of our nation, for now we are engaged in a struggle not merely for the preservation of our ideals and our ways of life, but for the preservation of our very existence. We Centralites also have undergone, as have o V, I arents, all the subtle changes which precede a war. We were, at first, indifferent towards the warg but without our being aware of it, our position gradually changed until finally, we found ourselves in the midst of a fight for our lives. This final realization came upon us slowly, and even now it is hard for some of us to visualize the gravity of our situation. For not since 1775 has America entered a conflict with so much at stake, not since then has our country faced such bitter odds, not since then have we as a nation been so seriously threatened with extinction. But if, until now, we have been asleep, if thus far we have withdrawn into our shells of self-satisfaction, trying to persuade ourselves that all is well with the world, if, until today, we have disregarded the ever-increasing eruptions about us, now, at least, we are awakening, now we are assuming our great responsibilities and are tak- ing up our many obligations. Now we are looking forward with grim resolution and strong determination to our task of putting an end to a war which was thrust upon us. It is true that we are a peace-loving nation, but it is equally true that, now forced into war, we shall not shirk our duties, but shall proceed, with confidence in ourselves and faith in our destiny, to overcome our obstacles and to bring back to its sanity a maddened world. Thus it is that, with full confidence in the outcome of this war, we dedicate this our yearbook to our final victory, and we hope, in years to come when we look back on these trying times, that this book will help us to remember that the price of liberty iseternal vigilance.
