E31 Q. ,S I! ,, x , , 4A ' . .q.J FOREWORD This year is one of the most fateful years in the history of our nation, for now we are engaged in a struggle not merely for the preservation of our ideals and our ways of life, but for the preservation of our very existence. We Centralites also have undergone, as have o V, I arents, all the subtle changes which precede a war. We were, at first, indifferent towards the warg but without our being aware of it, our position gradually changed until finally, we found ourselves in the midst of a fight for our lives. This final realization came upon us slowly, and even now it is hard for some of us to visualize the gravity of our situation. For not since 1775 has America entered a conflict with so much at stake, not since then has our country faced such bitter odds, not since then have we as a nation been so seriously threatened with extinction. But if, until now, we have been asleep, if thus far we have withdrawn into our shells of self-satisfaction, trying to persuade ourselves that all is well with the world, if, until today, we have disregarded the ever-increasing eruptions about us, now, at least, we are awakening, now we are assuming our great responsibilities and are tak- ing up our many obligations. Now we are looking forward with grim resolution and strong determination to our task of putting an end to a war which was thrust upon us. It is true that we are a peace-loving nation, but it is equally true that, now forced into war, we shall not shirk our duties, but shall proceed, with confidence in ourselves and faith in our destiny, to overcome our obstacles and to bring back to its sanity a maddened world. Thus it is that, with full confidence in the outcome of this war, we dedicate this our yearbook to our final victory, and we hope, in years to come when we look back on these trying times, that this book will help us to remember that the price of liberty iseternal vigilance. Harned, a gentleman and a scholar of the highest standards and attainments, for many years a member of our Business Department and Faculty Adviser for the bank, in which he gave inspired and devoted service, died May, 1941. Near the close of the school year we regretted having to announce the death on May 4-, 1942, of Mr. Frederick J. Brunner, the well known and popular swimming instructor here at Central. Throughout the twenty- five or more years of service in our school, he has played an important part in the training of hundreds of boys, many of whom have attained places of renown as championship leaders on college teams while count- less others have learned the value of true sportsmanship in character development. To give the student body of Central High School a greater share in the govern- ment of the school, to insure a better enforcement of school laws, and to promote a closer feeling between student and faculty are the aims of the Student Council set forth in the Constitution of Central High School. These aims well exemplify the works of the organization. All through our school year we endeavor to our fullest extent to uphold the ideals of our activity. We have an Executive Council and a General Council which are active throughout the school year. The former is composed of members from the latter. The first two years of high school are allowed one representative and the last two years have the privilege of electing two to the General Council. From this General Council of about seventy-six students is selected the Executive Council, which acts as a steering com- mittee to propose measures to the General Council. Now that you know the composition of our Council it is well that we go to the different works and major activities that are undertaken throughout the school year. First, every year comes the Christmas Drive which has become a tradition to all Centralites. This past year we had, without doubt, our best Drive. Unly through the cooperation of all those who participated was this made possible. This project as many others unifies the student body through participation in a common interest. This year as for the past three years, we have had a system of coaching for those students who find it hard to get all the private attention needed to complete their courses. The coaching is under the direction of the Second Vice-President, Henry Hales. l wish at this time to commend, with my sincere thanks, the ability which he has portrayed by performing this useful service to the school. Unlike previous semesters this has been a war semester with many more ex- penses because of higher taxes and a threat of air raids on our community and homes. To meet the expenses needed to provide various implements essential for our self- preservation, the Council has put on a series of programs ranging from Jazz Bands to those of home talent, charging a small fee for attendance. The proceeds have gone into a fund for war time necessities. On behalf of the General and the Executive Councils I extend with grateful hands the thanks for the laudable assistance of Rosemary Schmutzer, our First Vice- President. In the same manner also I wish to thank our Secretary, Catherine Korbelg our Treasurer, Donald Rein, and our Sergeant-at-Arms, James Kurz, for the com- petent executive ability displayed throughout the past semester. HAROLD CRANKSHAW, Faculty Adviser U31 .-Q. ., ,.:,Qg r . 0 THE CENTRAL BULLETIN C. DONALD EVERSON As Central commemorated its sixtieth anniversary as a school and its twenty- tfifthhcyear in the present building, The Central BULLETIN celebrated its twenty-fifth irt ay. This year, many changes have occurred. Because of rising prices, the length of the paper had to be cut from 19 to 14- inches, the number of columns from six to five, and the column width from 13 to 12 picas. A new style, making use of streamlining and flashy type, Hobo and Broadway, was adopted. The War also brought about some changes in the type of material printed. Throughout the year the BULLETIN backed every move of the U ,V ates Government and started a new policy by run- ning many stories of news of the school, such as defense work and the par- ticipation of Central graduat 'in the war effort behind and on the front lines. The Memorial Day issue was a high point in this type of story. In October, Miss Gertrude Walter, because of other obligations, was forced to relinquish the advisership of the editorial staff to Mrs. Jeanette Kern. Mr.. George O'Neill left in March to take a position in the Tariff Commission. His, post imviser of the business staff was taken over by Mr. Harold Crankshaw, who alreaigi , , gfill- ing the position of adviser of the printing staff. A In spite of these conditions, The Central BULLETIN kept its percentage of sub- scriptions, retaining over 700 subscribers as the school enrollment fell to 1400. The April Foolis Day edition had the highest paid sales, above subscriptions, in a num- ber of years. The returns were 5155.00 or 100 papers sold. At the G. W. High School Press Conference, held November 28, 1941, Jack Sheeskin, Co-Sports Editor of the BULLETIN, was awarded a medal for the best sports story written by a high school student in the middle Atlantic states. The BULLETIN terminated the year with a senior 'me' THE REVIEW THE Enrroas Every year changes are made, and new ideas are introduced into the Review. This year the staff has endeavored to add new interest to the make-up of the magazine by using for titles assorted letter types suitable to the mood of the particular story or article, rather than restricting the titles to one style of type. Because of the demands of our all-out war effort on paper and other supplies, the Review's size was necessarily cut this year. The circulation of the Review has also decreased because of the school's reduced enrollment. ln spite of these handicaps, however, Central's literary magazine has continued to publish ii high standard of stu- dent work for the enjoyment of the student body. In the June issue four pages were devoted entirely to the work of the Art Depart- ment, whose illustrations have contributed so 'much to the attractiveness of the maga- zine. For the first time in its history, the Review published a poem in French, which was written by Vera Pevsner. The November issue featured a two-page spread of Centralis victorious football team in addition to a photograph of the team in action. ' The Review was honored by a letter from Lord Halifax, the British ambassador to the United States, congratulating Lincoln Baxter on his pgem, Britannia, 1802- l94l.,' which was also published in the November Review.,,2g511f?fiQfiii'-'fs This is-:ue also contained the prize-winning essay in lpsihsponsored by the Colonial Daughters- Youth's Interest in Democracy byiM' i ' 'McMullen. A kind tribute was paid the Review by Miss Margaret Gi, M -the president of the National Society of the Colonial Daughters: 1 enjoyed looking through this fifty- four year old magazine of Central High School and wish to compliment you on its handsome appearance and interesting contents. I can well imagine the enthusiasm which goes into its production by its able staff of writers, editors, and artists, and the pride and satisfaction with which it is received. HoRAcE SIEGLER, JR. The High School Cadet Corps, founded here at Central sixty years ago, has been one of the Inost important of our activities. This year with Wcmrld War II in progress, the Regiment. largest of the groups representing Central in lnter-high competition felt the weight of the extra responsibilities placed upon it in connection with our war effort. Of course, the technique for actual combat is not taught: the Cadet Corps is essentially a drill unit. stressing military precision. Since ancient times military leaders have recognized the importance of this type of drill. It not only builds strong bodies aIId improves posture, but also instills habits of precision. and prompt response to the leaderls orders. The cadet has respect for authority, a sense of responsibility. and as an ofhcer or non-commissioned officer develops qualities of leadership. This year the First Regiment regretfully lost the services of Mr. Lynn F. Wood- worth who is our very busy Acting Assistant-Principal. However, the Regiment was exceptionally fortunate in the appointment of Lt. C. W. D. Waller, a graduate of the Naval Academy, as lVlilitary lnstructor. At first with the declining enrollment, only enough boys reported to form a battalion. Many members of the student body and of the faculty were alarmed at Central's loss of regimental standing. After an urgent and effective drive, however, the Regiment was soon formed. The First Battalion won third place, competing against fourteen others in the Battalion Competitiong and now, with the Company Competition coming up, the Regiment is certain of success. The First Regiment is proud of its many former members now serving in the armed forces in defense of our country. The cadets are pleased to have had a taste of military life. They hope that it will help them to meet the privileges and responsi- bilities of a citizen of the United States of America, and if the country needs their services, they will be glad to have already learned a few of the fundamentals of mili- tary life so that they may better serve their country. l32l f Q I-'IIISI' H X'l I'fXI.l0N S'l'fXlflf Xlylmc .Il-311111113 I,UI.l.Xf'k. lfullrzlinn fjllllllllllllllfl' I IIlN'I' l.II1I 'rm xx'1' H1x11u1,1m 111.15511 xxx. Central is fortunate to be numbered among the chosen high schools having a chapter of the National Honor Society, for this represents to the high school pupil what Phi Beta Kappa does to the college student. It is distinction to be won through his most worthwhile efforts. There is in every school a need for some incentive on the part of the student to achieve distinction in those activities he most enjoys, some basis for evaluating his contributions to school life, some means for recognition of ability in different fields. That the National Honor Society fills these very needs is proved by the high quality of character developed in its members. Election to this group is on a percentage basis from the upper third of the class, usually from the 6th, 7th, and 8th semesters. Members are privileged to wear the pin showing the purpose of the organization. In the foreground is a flaming torch which symbolizes the lighting of the path of knowledge, in the background is a keystone on which are engraved the letters C. S. L. S. for Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service, the traits that each member engraves on his life's structure. The spirit and purpose of the society is embodied in the pledge which the mem- bers take and renew each semester, I will be a loyal member of the Alpha Chapter of the National Honor Society, steadfast in my purpose to abide by the right, to serve all just causes, and to seek the truth with my whole heart both in books and in my lifef' l5'7l CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AWARDS Publications: A. Fight for victory and honor Fight for dear old Alma Mater Fight with all your might and power To win another game today. We'll cheer to help you win the battle Giving everything we have 1 So fight for victory and honor M For our school today. TEN AX PROPOSITI Steadfast of purpose, march along With dauntless step to martial song! Though we are young our school is old And battles won should make us bold If clear our purpose be. Ours not to blaze an untrod way Through woods that hide the light of day For Central's vanguard long ago Made smooth the road whereon we go li ith many a victory. Cnonus March onward! March with lifted eyes! On yonder goal our banner flies! Sing, sing, triumphantly, Tenax Propositi. mi flew JT? Y MID-YEAR CLASS VALEDICTORY ELIZABETH JOHNSTON Today it has finally come, the moment we have been so eagerly anticipating, the moment when we are about to receive our diplomas. It has been a long time since we entered grade school, twelve years ago, and until this year our diploma has seemed a distant, unattainable object, hidden away in the unknown future. Even now, when we are about to receive these precious documents, we are almost dubious of the fact that we have actually reached the goal to which we have so long looked forward. Yet receiving this diploma is not the end of our journey, rather it is only the beginning. Most of us have planned to go into some special field of endeavor, either immediately after graduating from Central or after attending college. ln the usual course of events we should do as we had planned, but these are not ordinary times. 0ur country is now at war and every facility is being devoted to winning that war. We are the first class to be graduated from Central since a state of war was declared. It would be foolish and futile to expect that the war will have no effect on our lives, because it will have the greatest influence on all of us. Because of the war we shall have many opportunities to get positions in the huge effort which our country is devoting for victory, but we must remember that we shall also have greater responsi- bilities. We can no longer think of ourselves in terms of our own personal desires. We must think of ourselves as a part of a united effort and we must assume our share of the obligations. These obligations which lie ahead of us are adult ones which will require calm thinking and mature deliberation. Yet we must retain our youthful outlook on life. We must add our courage, our hope, and our confidence to the morale of the nation. However, in any eventuality, we shall never forget the years that we have spent at school which have been among the most pleasant in our lives. The athletic events we have watched or participated in, the school organizations which we have joined, and the social gatherings where we have met, have all played an important part in the enjoyment which we have had at Central. More than that, they have taught us sportsmanship, given us a variety of interests, and increased our interest in each other. Yes, all the experiences that have come to us during our years at Central have had an important part in shaping our lives and the inspiration of these last four years will live forever in our memories. We pause for one last look and then we must heed the call of the future. To the principal and the assistant principals and to our teachers who have given us so much of their time andmenergy, I pledge in behalf of the class our fidelity and loyalty to Central's standards and ideals. . E781 MID-YEAR -CLASS HIS: 'Y 0 ABE BRENNER 'V .Vg . Three years ago in his welcoming address, Mr. Hoover, our Principal, told us that we were just beginning a race in which our every effort, our every sacrifice, our every achievement, would but increase our power for final victory. He remarked that a prize was offered to all who start, but sternly added that it was given only to those who persevere to the end. Today, January 30, 1942, marks the end of that race for us, the February Graduating Class, and we, the victors, stand ready to receive the garlands and applause that come as a result of our persistent efforts that enabled us to reach our goal. But before we receive the awards for which we have striven, before we begin either the race in higher schools of learning or in the school of active life, let us turn from these troubled war times of today and observe how 'the past events have qualified us for the future. Eventful is our retrospection and perhaps no other retiring class will look back upon rarer reminiscences than the one that is now leaving Central. During our stay here, we studied history to learn what others have done, literature, to know what others have said, science, to better understand existing conditions, mathematics, to sharpen our wits. We shared alike in the absorption of high ideals, and since we learned the same lessons, overcame similar trials, and shared alike in our school triumphs and defeats, we came to understand one another better. We formed friend- ships that neither time nor circumstances can sever or divide. Our respect for Central increased daily, and as we saw her progress in every field in which she endeavored, we felt an enthusiasm that could not be silenced, our loyalty remained unchanged in victory or defeat. ln 1939 alone, Central won the interhigh baseball championship, the District Athletic Swimming Meet, the Brigade Map Problems Competition, and the National Press Association's award of All- American rating for the Bulletin , our school paper. Again in 194-0 and '41 Central repeated many of the above mentioned victories and added several new ones to the list, those of the interhigh track championship being exceptionally outstanding. And now, classmates, as our school life draws to a close and we go our separate ways, let it be our earnest and constant giaeavor to live up to those standards that our Principal and our teachers have so whole-heartedly given us. With an imperishable love for Central, with steadfast loyalty to one another, with a respectful farewell, let us bid our school good-bye. JUNE CLASS VALEDICTORY JAMES BAXTER Our graduating class, like our nation, is finding it necessary to examine its defects and its possibilities. For several years past, the United States has thought itself practically invulner- able. It assumed that its defenses were suflicient to withstand any invader, and that the thousands of miles of oceans on either side of it were ample insulation from the heat of any wars in which Europe might engage itself. We Americans were proud and complacently satisfied with our high state of civilization, and We calmly took for granted our hard-earned freedoms and countless luxuries. Today, our graduating class finds itself in a similar position. We have com- pleted the required course of study in a superior high school in a superior city. We have had the advantages of a well-chosen faculty and of numerous and specialized courses. We would be inclined to think that our fine training had prepared us for any eventualities, and we probably overlook the fact that, without the necessary guiding elements, our studies will benefit us very little. ,lust as it took the disaster of Pearl Harbor to show our country her weaknesses and the necessity of complete cooperation by everyone, it is likely that we who are going out into the world will not realize our own weaknesses until we are put to the test and need our abilities most. For, as our freedoms are worthless unless we protect them with discipline, our studies will be of little advantage to us if we do not apply them with the proper understanding and back them with sound principles. To be more concrete, what are some of these principles: what things are solid foundations on which to build one's actions and one's life, what will help us to prepare ourselves for our Pearl Harbors? Let's examine just two: faith and sincerity. To have faith is to have the unHagging conviction that right will win. It is to sacrifice and to suffer, to work and to worry, but still to hold on. I think that in the future the classic example of mass faith will be the way in which the people of the British Isles have stood up under the most punishing attacks in all history, without wavering. Surely if an entire people can hang on through months of increasing hardships, we of the graduating class can learn to do so too. I remember a cross- stitched sampler that hangs on the wall of a friend's home. It says, Keep your eyes always toward the sun, and the shadows will fall behind you.'7 That is to have faith. In building tomorrow's world and our own lives, what can be more important than sincerity, the quality of being honest and genuine. A real peace is founded upon trust, and trust will come from individuals like you and me, because. if we are honest and sincere with ourselves, the rest will take care of itself. When many of us were studying Hamlet recently, we realized that the advice of crafty old Polonius to his departing son is just as valid today as it was 400 years ago. To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man. That is sincerity. We must bulwark ourselves behind these trustworthy and time-proven fortifica- tions, if we are to endure the storms of life that are in store for us. ,lust as a telephone pole is covered with a coating of creosote to protect it from termites that may eat away the inside of the wood and leave the pole seemingly perfect, though really only a hollow shell that will collapse at the first unusual strain, we must add to our characters the faith, and honesty, and loyalty, and stamina that will see us through. A tragic example of pleasures taken for granted and undisciplined freedoms is the country of France in her present plight. France was undermined by political jealousy and Fifth Column intrigue in much the same way as the unprotected tele- phone pole by termites, until, when the emergency arrived, she collapsed. Poor Continued on page 112 H081 JUNE CLASS HISTORY Roscoe HANKIN Ladies and gentlemen, tonight marks the last phase in the history of the June Class of 1942. As the last minutes of our stay at Central tick by, let us look back three years, for a last and final summary of what has happened while we were a part of the great and grand old school. It is in September, 1939, that our story begins, when we were gathered for the first time in this very hall which was out of all pro- portions in size to that which we were accustomed to in our former schools. We were a wild and unorganized group, but were soon to be welded into,an efficient machine capable of accomplishing work. In our first year we had the good fortune to watch some of the best athletes the school has ever produced. Such persons as Harry Martin, Benny Steiner, and Al Hayden were the most outstanding. After defeating Tech in our age-old feud, the football team suffered its greatest calamity in losing to Western, a defeat which will long be remembered and which will be paid back in the years to come. After an uneventful winter the students of Central decided upon Vikings as a nick-name for the teams which will represent Central in the years to come. The results of the spring were great. The track and baseball championships were ours. Company B placed third in the annual competitive drill, and the Bulletin received an All-American rating from the National Scholastic Press Association. While these achievements were being accomplished, we, as sophomores and then as juniors began, in increasing numbers, to fall in line and take a more active part in Central's activities. , Although Central's athletes did not receive outstanding awards in our junior year, definite advancement was made in training themselves for the next year. The First Regiment placed third in the regimental drill, and for the first time in six years Central took a place in 'the Battalion competition when the Second Battalion placed third. Later on the ever-dependable Company B placed second in its competitive drill. The Bulletin again received first-class rating from the National Scholastic Press Association, and the Review, the only high school magazine in the city, and which has been in existence for fifty-five years, received the highest praise from certain writers of the New York Times. For the first time in our lives we saw Captain Doerr, our military instructor, and some of our fellow students called into active service. Our last year is the one which will stand out most in our memories, for in this year we held most of the highest positions and took the most active part in the affairs of the school. School started as usual in late September, but on the first of the month a grim determined group of sun-bleached Vikings took the field, hungry for a championship which had not been won by Central in the last three years. The field had just been sodded, but as ill fate would have it, the weather man went to sleep on his job and we witnessed the worst drought in our lives. But the team, despite all hazards of our dust bowl, under the new and able coaching of Mr. Iankowski, went through an undefeated season, captured the inter-high championship, and above all beat Tech to send us ahead in the series of Tech-Central games. In the mid-year season, Central's basketeers, despite all ridicule given them by the local sports writers, finished a close second in the inter-high series. ln the annual Christmas drive the Student Council supplied many a needy family with food, money, and clothing, donated by the students of the school. But before this, on December 7, 1941, something happened six thousand miles away. This catastrophe, which I don't need to mention again, caused a change in our entire school life. The future had to be looked at from a different angle, in order to do what would benefit the country most. The school shifted to war time and many precious hours of sleep were lost. Paper collections began on its All Out for Victoryi' campaign. Some Continued on page 112 H091 'A' . JUNE CLASS HISTORY fffontinued from page 1091 of our boys were whole-heartedly disappointed when they learned that their parents' signature was needed in order to fight Uncle Sam's battles. But despite all national problems, the school still managed to exist, and the spring still managed to follow the winter. The track and baseball teams came out to practice, each with new hopes, while the cadets still drilled with the expectation of capturing new honors in the competitive drills. The First Battalion placed third in its competition. The Bulletin, for the third straight year, was marked as a first rate high school newspaper. Thus ends the last phase of the class of June, 1942, marked down and remem- bered along with all other worthy classes that have gone before us. We are proud to have come from Central. The school has given us much and we will attempt to repay that which has been given to us by becoming upright American citizens. JUNE CLASS VALEDICTORY fffontinued from page 1085 France! She is without the freedoms We take so lightly-freedoms that are typified by a man lifting a gate latch at dusk and sitting for a while on the porch, smoking his pipe, before he goes to bed -freedom, that is the violence of an argument outside an election poll, and the righteous anger of the pulpits. It's all the 'howdys' in the world and all the 'hellos'. Freedom is you, trying to remember the words to the Star Spangled Banner, itis a man cursing all cops. Our freedoms are all the things we do and want to keep on doing, all the things we feel and cannot help feelingf' . To keep these freedoms, the people of our country are foregoing their luxuries and remembering the fundamentals that will carry them through this war and carry the rest of the world through the peace. Our defenses are growing stronger every day, and we are making ourselves ready not only to defend our own land, but also to attack the aggressors and retake the soil that our allies have lost. The youth of1his nation and of this graduating class stand ready to protect the liberties that their ancestors died to establish. And if and when our enemies approach our shores to invade our land-they shall not pass! They shall not pass.
