THE STUDENT COUNCIL ELIZABETH BRUBAK1-:R Jos REYNOLDS The Student Council, through this school year successfully continued programs begun in former years and initiated five new activities. The Guardian System, which provides for incoming rookies, was handled by the second vice'president, Marion Fowler, and the lunch room committee, responsi- ble for the cleanliness at the school cafeteria, was under the chairmanship of the first vice-president, Joseph Reynolds. The council faculty adviser, Miss Rosalie Robinette, took charge of the coaching system and was assisted by a coaching committee headed by Sallie Steele. To supplement the individual aid given in former years to freshmen need- ing help in their subjects, experimental study halls, under the leadership of upper- classmen were begun and found successful. The Council sponsored dancing in the Armory for the entertainment of the students during their lunch periods. The committee in charge of the dancing, under the chairmanship of Pete Snyder, arranged for the payment of the orches- tras by a five-cent admission fee, the popularity of the dancing, however, provided a surplus fund which was added to the Council treasury, thus making a treasurer necessary and Margaret Osterwald was elected to fill the office. The surplus in the treasury made possible an extensive Christmas program which was followed throughout the school for the aid of needy families during the holiday season. Food, clothing, and presents were distributed through the co- operation of sections and individual contributions of clothing and small sums of money. The money remaining from these contributions was formed into a Wel- fare Fund to be maintained by the council in the future for the benefit of those in need and to be used at the discretion of the Assistant Principal, Miss Helen Coolidge. ln addition to the dancing and Christmas projects the council sponsored two assemblies, one given each semester. It is hoped that the Student Council in future years will continue and improve upon the work done by this year's group. i231
