Central is about to graduate a large class into the turmoil of a transitional period in our national life. After four years under Central's splendid faculty its members are now ready to meet new situations. Those who are fortunate enough to matriculate in universities and colleges will view the past in retrospect, studying the mistakes of others in order that they may not commit the same ones. Those, less fortunate, who must go out into the world at once must learn from experience and study in their leisure moments so that they may have an active part in the building of the new order: hence the choice of recovery as the theme of the nineteen thirty-four Brecky. In the construction of the Year Book it is often hard to prevent too great a simi- larity with other issues. The nineteen thirty-four Brecky staff started the production of this book with the idea of having it as different from its predecessors as possible. Several suggested changes have been adopted. For instance, the technique of the art work in the nineteen thirty-four book is a departure from the modernistic style that has prevailed in recent years. Another change is in replacing the pictures of the senior officers ofthe cadets by those of the complete companies. The appearance of the biographical section has also been slightly altered by making panels of five in- stead of four. In the nineteen thirty-four book the Brecky staii has attempted to preserve the long established traditions of Centralis annual. The staff sincerely hopes that the members of the nineteen thirty-four class will find here a pleasing record of their four years at Central. Much has been accomplished, but there is still much to be done. We had hoped to institute some new activity this year, but this did not materialize. On the other hand, the Council did act upon many important measures. Among the first of these was the tax bill. This bill had been passed last year, but was vetoed by Dr. Smith. Containing a provision instructing the Council to lower the tax, the bill was vetoed on the grounds that the provision instructing a future Council to do something was not parliamentary. With this objectionable provision stricken out, it was passed by the Council and approved by Dr. Smith. The Central HCC is awarded by a board consisting of three faculty members and two students. Previously they had no discretion in the awarding of '5C7s'7. They were obliged to decide according to certain fixed provisions. By allowing them a little leeway it was made possible to award more uC's,, than usual to our championship football team. The provisions for the award of the NCT in Boys, Swimming were changed upon the recommendation of Mr. Brunner. This change equalizes the awarding ot the letter. . One of the most important of the measures passed was the bill which made definite the method of nominating the candidates for President and Vice-President of the Council. Previously, there had been no definite provision and misunder- standings had occurred. The bill provides for the grading of the candidateis marks and his recommendations from the faculty members by a committee of four stu- dents and a faculty adviser. This is to be done in absolute secrecy. The Golf Bill, in effect making Golf a major sport, was defeated. Its oppon- ents maintained that as long as all the high schools did not have Golf teams the sport could hardly be classified as a major one. The Council carried on its activities of previous years. The Lunchroom Com- mittee, under the able chairmanship of Jane Burns for the first semester and Elmon Burton for the second, maintained its splendid work in keeping the lunchroom presentable. This is one of the big services to the school and accomplishes the most visible results of any of the Councilis activities. The guardian system, whereby an upper semester person is appointed to look after a first semester student, was maintained. This is a very important function of the Council as it is a tie between the upper and lower semesters. It has been the practice of the Council to provide coaches for Freshman stu- dents failing in one subject. This activity, besides helping the Freshman, is im- portant in that it brings together an upper and an under class student. It has brought about a feeling of friendly cooperation and a unity between the students of these different semesters which should promote among them the true school spirit. We urged the under classmen to participate more in School affairs as we felt them to be the ones, in the end, most affected by Council measures. Unfortunately, the Council did not initiate, as was hoped, a constructive As- sembly program. Only one Assembly was actually arranged and sponsored by the Council. The Student Council is young yet. The newly elected officers will control the destinies of an organization which has definitely won its place in the life of the school. It has made mistakes, yet each year it pushes forward, gathering strength and power until someday it may serve to weld the school into a monumental ex- ample of unity. The officers of this Council sincerely wish all good luck and success to their successors. T231 1 l l 1 EW X xx wx x l I- . .. We have been striv- ing toward a goal, and now that we have reached it, we look back upon our years at Central with pride and regret-pride at our achievements, regret that we must so soon depart. The four short years have witnessed our growth from timorous freshmen to assured seniors. The transition was gradual, but through the excellent inliuence of our principal and teachers we have gained an assurance that will remain with us long after we leave the halls of Central. But before we step over the threshold, let us pause to recall the memorable events of our happiest years. ln 1930 the usual group of Freshmen entered Central High School. The pass- age of time alone would tell, if in 1934, a usual or an outstanding group of seniors would graduate. Immediately upon our entrance, however, we felt a pride at being Centralites. ln our Sophomore year, opportunity for service to Central knocked, and we opened the door through our athletic, dramatic, literary, and military activities. It was then that the Cadets marched off with the honors in the Competitive Drill. Our first taste of victory created a thirst for more. To trace our athletic achievements is to recall a brilliant record. Many cups and trophies have recently been added to the already large number. ln l933 our track team carried off first honors of the meet. The following winter, our basketball team scored a series of victories, finally gaining the championship. The swimming team, having retained possession of the Championship Cup for three successive years, gained permanent title to it. This fall proved to be the most thrilling football season of the past four years. Our team carried off victory after victory. After de- feating Tech, the district championship was within our reach, so we lost no time in grasping it, the efforts of several of our class members made this possible. Some of our dramatic successes are partly due to the efforts of members of our class who have shown talent along the lines of drama and music. Under the able direction of our music instructors, our glee club, the Central Songsters, won the Fox Theatre Music Competition for two years. Publications have been outstanding. The Bulletin has merited first class honor rating with the grade of 'alixcellenti' in all National Scholastic Press Association Contests. For the past two years our magazine, the Review, has received awards from the Columbia and National Scholastic Press Associations. Along military, athletic, dramatic, and literary lines we have excelled-left our names engraved on the records of our school. Even so, these are not the memories that we shall retain in the years to come. It is the fine memory of the little things, the happy hours, eventful days in our own individual lives that will stay with us. The past years have had a marked inHuence over us. We have realized that they were lean years, and have attempted, through our social organizations, to share with those less fortunate than ourselves. Our history would be incomplete without mention of such experiences, for after all, it is the friends we have made, and the good times we have spent that we shall remember forever. Granting that history repeats itself, we can safely predict a successful future for our class and its members. i931 MID-YEAR VALEDICTORY Rosa FIGUEREAS Members of the Faculty, Fellow Classmates, and Friends: As we, the members of the 19341 February Class, stand here tonight We realize that this is one of the most important moments of our lives. We can scarcely realize that the goal toward which we have been striving has at last been reached. Yes, though experiences have at times been difficult, lessons have been tedious and hard and even instructors sometimes exacting, we have overcome these obstacles and tonight we stand victorious. This time last year our country was in a maelstrom. People were out of work, hungry, without shelter and depressed, but economic thinkers believe that the coun- try is at last coming out of this great disaster. A 'cNew Dealw is really at hand. Whether or not we agree entirely with this New Deal its measures have done much good. It has restored work to thousands, it has brought comfort to many homes and it has given new faith and courage to those who were once depressed and discouraged. The country is certainly getting on its feet and soon prosperity should turn that long looked for corner. As we stand on the threshold of a new world, the question, fellow classmates, that we must ask ourselves tonight in all seriousness is, '4What part are we to have in this stupendous program outlined for the recovery of our country?'7 Although We had little to do with the tearing down processes, yet as young people we must claim a place in our great economic and social world. On leaving school we will be plunged into a totally different environment, with perhaps no assurance of a position, no clear sense of what we want to do. We will be taking our places with the other thirty million young Americans between the ages of 18 and 35. The real significance now is that we must not be a worthless byproduct of the New Deal. Surely the four years spent at Central have given us some solid foundation for better citizenship, some standards of efficiency, some ideals for living and an un- daunted courage to go out with a singleness of will, to do our best in spreading good- will, faith and loyalty to the principles of our great country. As we look back tonight on the years spent here, our feelings are strangely mingled: regret, at leaving Central, joy in facing new opportunities for putting into practice the lessons learned here. And now, the time has come to say goodbye: To Dr. Smith, lVlr. Hoover, Miss Coolidge, and to our faithful instructors, l wish to express in behalf of our class our warmest appreciation of their infinite patience and abiding faith in us and to pledge anew our loyalty and fidelity to the highest ideals of Central. 'T' - JUNE CLASS HISTORY MARY HAMMERS A long time ago, four years to be exact, we Seniors, rookies then, first encoun- tered what we considered a huge task-climbing the 'cladder of successw. As timid souls, we were undecided as to whether we should go around it or scale it. Although a little discouraged by the fact that Tech had won the football championship, we concluded that we had overcome this obstacle when the Bulletin and Review gained first place in the Columbia and National Scholastic Press Association competitions and the basketball team tied with Eastern for the District championship. ln the latter part of the year, we found the climbing easier: the Songsters won the silver cup in the Fox competition in the lnterhigh School Music Festival, the track team placed second among the high schools of the Dis- trict and the second Battalion won first place in the Battalion drill. To top it all and to make us feel that we were on the right road to success, Captain Thomas Hinkel led Company A to victory in the competitive drill. Coming back in the fall as Sophomores after a successful Freshman year, we abolished the old inactive bodies of Junior and Senior Councils and organized our present more active system of student participation in student administration by which every section, upper and lower semesters alike, are represented in a general council, and everyone has a voice in the election of president and vice- president of this body. The football and swimming teams gained third place in their respective competitions. Later, despite spring fever, we proceeded to climb our ladder more quickly. The Songsters were again the winners in the Fox com- petition. The Bulletin and Review once more received highest rating in the Co- lumbia and National Scholastic Press Association competitions. Our victorious track team carried us still another rung higher. When the band won first place and the first Battalion, second in the competitives, we felt we had reached the top. But we were only half-way near our goal. In the following year as Juniors, we suffered a relapse, with a single victory in sports-the basketball team placed first. However, the Bulletin and Review maintained their high ratings, while the Songsters placed second in the Fox com- petition. Our regiment marched off the field ranking second. Back again in the fall of 1933, as Seniors, We were handed a new deal. This time it was the football team which sent us another rung higher by winning the District championship. The swimming team also helped us along by placing second in the South Atlantic High School meet. The girls' rifle team sent us soaring towards the top by winning the national championship for the eighth time in succession. The one-act play contest, in which six one-act plays were given, was an innovation over previous fall productions. A highly successful modern comedy, Come Out of the Kitchenn, given this year, was a change from a Shake- speare play, A Midsummer-Nighfs Dream , presented in 1932, and the period play, Quality Streetn, of 1933. In the Regimental drill our Regiment again succeeded in gaining second place. After three years of hard Work, we can look back on the successful achieve- ment of the Student Council, namely, the greatly improved condition of the lunch- room. This body has worked out a system to provide guardians for rookies, lately they have undertaken the task of coaching failing freshmen-all these efforts tending to create a better spirit between younger and older classmen. Various other organizations such as Bon Secour have helped us reach the top through lines of service. Step by step, or rather, rung by rung, we have gradually reached the goal which we set out to gain, the very top of the Mladder of success . So we would pass on to our successors hope and encouragement that they may attain still higher goals. D451 JUNE CLASS POEM NORMA LEWTON Todav we hold our lives within our grasp, And stand with hearts now stilled in expectation. Yve seek the way that leads from our distress And trust that we from failure have exemption. With ey es strained upward and ahead, one people, Vile build new highways toward a world redemption L14csJ JUNE CLASS VALEDICTORY WILLIAM LESHER Despite the fact that we all regret exceedingly our leaving Central High School, we must be, at the present time, chiefly concerned with our opportunities and chances for service in the life which we are now beginning. Today, due to the great economic and social readjustments which the world is making in its upward trend after the great depression, we have such opportuni- ties as were never before given a graduating class. lt is we who must build up the structure that is to take the place of the former civilizationg it is we who must determine the course which this great nation of ours shall pursue in years to come. For all great changes in a nation's life and customs must begin with its youth, represented in this country by the classes of our various secondary schools. It is these schools, more than any other factor, that will determine the aspect of our world inside of twenty years, for, just as it is the youth that determines the course of a nation, it is these schools which determine the course of youth, molding each individual's childish ideas and fancies into deep-rooted principles or else in- ducing him to discard them as unworthy of a mature mind. Thus we can see the great benefits to be derived from a good school and the harm done by a bad one. Let us be thankful, therefore, for this school of ours with its many opportunities for leadership and service, its traditions, and, above all, that elusive something called 6'Central spiritn. I have heard it said many times by 'cold gradsl' and lovers of 'cthe good old daysw that there is no longer any Central spirit, that it is not to be looked for in a school the size of Central. We who have gone there lately know this to be false. Whether she wins or loses in her competitions with other schools she is still our school and we stand by her. Thus we have become imbued with the beginnings of patriotism, for love of country is akin to love of school. ln these days of selfish ambition and the pursuit of money, such a patriotic feeling is sorely needed. Another thing which will be valuable in time to come is the ability to com- mand others. lntelligent, unsellish leadership is one of the great needs of the world today. With Central's student government system and the many student- controlled activities there have been chances for all of us to develop our powers of command so that we may be useful citizens of the world. The scholastic part of our training can be taken for granted. Certainly Cen- tralis scholastic standing can be denied by nobody. But even more valuable than book learning are those two qualities of loyalty and leadership, the two most valu- able assets given us by our high school training. And so we have the two factors most necessary to success, opportunity and training. The rest lies in our hands. We may become money-grabbers and, in the language of President Roosevelt, 'cchiselersw and cause the downfall both eco- nomically and socially, not to mention politically, of both ourselves and our country. On the other hand, we may, by unselfish and thoughtful effort, raise our country to a commanding place among the nations of the world, at the same time rendering it a better place in which to live. In any case we owe Central High School a debt of gratitude for an excellent education both mental and moral. Let us repay her by making the best possible use of it, in the interest of our homes and our country so that in time to come she may be proud of her alumni who have recognized the benefits received and used them to the best advantage. D471 A STUDENTS TRIBUTE TO DR. HEDRICK RETIRED JUNE, 1933 With cheerful mien he trod the daily mill, For forty years he met his task with skill, And all who under him received his thought, With deep respect his kindly spirit caught. Alas-no longer now does he come nigh, No more he treads the halls of Central High, For age, though blessed with knowledge and with health, Gives way to youth that,s blessed with youth,s own wealth, So now, as winter claims him for its own, With happy tasks he meets it, all alone, With cherished memories his days are cheered,- His absence does not make him less endeared.
