A FOREWORD Progress-the very essence of living. We must always progress and at inter- vals must stop to measure our progress, to review what has gone before, and to gain an incentive for future advances. That is what the world is doing this year in A Century of Progress International Exposition at Chicago. For one hundred and fifty days the evidence of the achievements of mankind in the past hundred years will he effectively presented. In the last century science has entered 'world industry and wrought wonderful changes in our daily life. At the beginning of this period man groped blindly for those laws which would enable him to mould the forces of Nature to conform to his needs. A terrific struggle has ensued, but today the results are manifested in new means of communication, new modes of transportation, new ways of manu- facturing, new weapons for fighting and preventing disease, and new products to add to our comfort, safety, and health. The exposition will appear as a fascinating encyclopedia come to life and spread out for all to see. Unparalleled lighting effects, color, and beauty of line are ,being employed to make this a true picture of modern development. We, the class of 1933, are expected as true moderns to reflect this progress of mankind, and not only as small parts of the world of today do we at this time stop to measure world progress, but, as individuals about to make a tremendous step forward, leaving our high school days to enter the whirl of industry or to embark upon a search for higher education, we stop to measure our progress, review all that has passed, and gather our ideas forlwhat is to come. Therefore we welcome the opportunity to dedicate our book to A Century of Progress. The staff feels that this year The Brecky is more nearly a hundred per cent student production than ever before. We are progressing, and as our excellent faculty advisers are already over-burdened, we have tried to give them a New Deall' in this age of New Deals . We have tried, too, to give our class a New Deal in Breckys. We have worked, we think, 'not in vain. It has its imperfec- tions, we hope that you will find them over-shadowed by its merits.
