The Bulletin and Review J AMES RAWLS OWENITA HARRAH Earthquakes and jigsaws may rock the country, banks may boom or burst, beer may even be bottled, but the Bulletin, which boasts sixteen years of weekly broadcasting of Central news events, and the REVIEW, modern bi-monthly magazine of forty-six, can comfortably recline until the first issues of next year, and con- tentedly recall: For the first time in several years, the number of would-be journalists was so great that three journalism classes were organized under the instruction of Miss Mildred Stallings. It was these students who learned to write, first, the literary articles of the second page, and second, interviews and uthird page features . The next, and the most important, thing that they were taught was to develop their noses for newsn to enable them to comb a definitely assigned news run and write the facts into a standard story,'. From there, page editors, column editors, headline writers, and typists lent a busy air to the work of compiling the issues in the Publications Office on the regular copy days, Thursday and Friday. On Saturday mornings the 'idummiesw were pasted up, and the paper printed in the Central print shop in time to appear the next Thursday. Because of the reorganization of the business department of publications, not enough subscriptions were obtained during the first semester to warrant the Bul- letin's entry in the national press associationls contests held to criticize and rate high school publications. But with the second semester came a new business system and headlines which delighted the school. The price of one issue was cut squarely in half, making the paper sell for five cents a copy. Since this gave more students the opportunity to buy, subscriptions soared up and up, setting a new high mark which future business staffs will fight to equal. The creation of a certain column aided subscriptions. With the first appearance of Peacock Alleyn, an exchange for gossip and clever incidents happening to well- known students, readers increased. Because the Bulletin does take care of all journalistic matter, the REVIEW, on the other hand, is devoted entirely to literary features. It is the only magazine of the kind in Washington. Although many of the stories and plays come from the short story and drama classes, there are no special classes to teach writing for the REVIEW. Stories, poetry, feature articles, book reviews, humorous sketches, and essays are sought from all who love to write. Mrs. Frances Doggett, faculty adviser for the REVIEW, selects the staff which is to prepare these contributions for publication. The preparation is real work. First, the copy is typed and sent to the printer. He returns it in long duplicate strips, printed galleys,', which are corrected, cut up, and pasted into an old REVIEW, known as the Hdummyw, in as interesting an arrangement as possible. Sometimes it is as puzzling as forty jigsaws to make forty pages come out just right. Then the dummy is sent to the printer and he returns page proof which is corrected by the staff. At last-the REVIEW bursts forth in all her glory, whereupon quarters tumble around in section rooms to buy her. lt is only then that the staff can really appre- ciate what it has been working over. Miss Summy, faculty adviser for the Hart part , has prepared attractive illustrations in linoleum, lithographic-pencil, and ink, which make the magazine an artistic as well as a literary success. It is a success , indeed, because the 1932-33 REVIEW was rated Medalist', fhighest honor? in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association contest. f26l
