This Year with the Student Council MARY LEHMAN, '33 The Student Council of Central High School has really accomplished a great deal during the past year-in spite of the Depression ! Banks may close, and banks may open, but the work of the Council progresses smoothly. This is due to the unfailing interest and devotion of Miss Rosalie Robinette, sponsor of the Council, to the work of the executives, and, in a large measure, to the whole-hearted cooperation of the members of both the Executive and the General Councils. Although we have now organized a new system under which in May we elect our executives to serve the following year, and which we believe will facilitate matters, this year's elections went smoothly and Robert Hammerlund and Edna Mae Miller were elected president and vice-president respectively from the groups of candidates. As our vice president was a member of the Mid-Year class, she automatically resigned, and I had the honor of being appointed by Dr. Smith to fill the vacancy. Although they were instigated in February, 1932, the guardian and coaching systems have been sufficiently successful this year to be regarded as a definite model for school procedures in coming years. Approximately thirty-five freshman have been coached, and twenty-seven of these afterward passed in their failing subjects. For this remarkable record, credit is certainly due to those who gave their time, energy and patience to this work. It is hoped that the seventh semester students will step into vacancies made by .lune graduates, and push this important work until every rookie coached passes-and we don't think that is hoping for too much. Another drive sponsored by the Council which was begun last year and which has met with success this year is the lunch room campaignv. You remember, clonit you? 'LTake your tray backn-yes, I thought you would. The point is, Centralites did take their trays back, and did put trash in the waste cansg hence, the reformation of the lunch room. The boys, better known as cheer leaders, who stood up on the stage during Chapels and went through all kinds of contortions in order to induce you to exer- cise your vocal chords in behalf of dear old Central, were chosen by the Council this year. Our cheers have been a bit lustier, too. We acquired this year room 3l3a in which the members of the Council carry on. Only those members of the Council who perpetually slid down hill in the former Council Room, which led to the roof, know what a blessing it is to he on the level again! Heat and ventilation systems were installed in the office during th summer, and a coat of paint was added. Then the search began for furniture. Fiially, the necessary desks were found, and now there are even curtains with the initials S. C. sewed in a monogram on them. We do need a picture moulding, and a typewriter badly. You see our bank, too, failed to open. However, we soon expect to buy the other things we need. An Archives Book with an attractive blue cover is one of the things which was bought this year. ln it we are going to keep all the important documents con- cerning the Council and its work. The Constitution, Point System, and the Method for Awarding Girls C s are the present contributions to the pages of the book. It seemed fitting that such a dignified and important body as the Student Council should have some permanent record of its work, so the 'LArchives will tell the story. Miss Robinette says that she looks forward to the time when the Council will do something in a disciplinary line and, perhaps, have a court. This is just a dream, but it will materialize, just as the dream of a Student Council. Congratulations! Student Council and best wishes for the coming years. i231
