The .Bulletin and Review ANNE KING LEE ANNA EMBREY HEN the Billletin and Review appear before their public in all the spick and spanness of crisp white paper and fresh ink, their orderly pages give no hint of the long hours and many steps in their publication. Room 321-A, where many volumes of Reviews and Bulletins have been edited, is tucked away around a corner on the third floor, and during the day presents a scene of apparent inactivity. But let the unsus- pecting layman come around after school some copy day, and what a beehive of editorial industry meets his eyes? The B'zillet'i11,, publishedlweekly. has its copy days every Thursday and Friday. On these days the reporters, who are members of the journalism classes, submit their stories. These must be sorted and given to the editors of the four pages, who then must go over them and indicate all necessary corrections. Corrected copy then passes into the hands of headline writers, who, to be really efficient, must have the knack of H11dl11gj11Sttl'1C right combination of words to Fit into the allotted space. When the story has finally assumed the shape in which it will appear, it is handed over to typists and emerges neatly type- written. On this copy headlines are printed and marked with directions for the printer, who receives the Biilletiu at this stage. Saturday morning finds a group of editors at the printer's finishing up late stories and odd headlines. The galleys are also received by the editor at this time. Galleys are long strips of paper on which the news is printed just as it will appear in the B ulletin. There are duplicate copies of each galley, one to be corrected for typographical errors and the other to be cut up and pasted on the dummies. The dummies are like dress patternsg they indicate to the printer what each page is to look like. The printer receives the pasted dummies on Monday afternoon. Tuesday he gives the editor proofs of the pages, which are checked over for stray mistakes: and bright and early Wednesday morning Centralites receive the Bulletin in the final stage of its evolution. Almost microscopic in the mass of students at Central is the group which is fully initiated into the mysteries of publishing the Review. To produce this fifty-six-page magazine seven times a year in a really competent way is impossible because of the brief term of each staff. Every year a green editor and twenty-odd green staff members begin at the beginning, only to approach efficiency as their work draws to a close in the spring. There are four distinct steps in the making of the Review, each of which entails a careful reading of all the material. On copy day, staff members and faculty adviser gather to cull the best from the stories. poems, and articles submitted. When the choice is made, the editor and faculty adviser must proof-read and occasionally censor the copy in prepara- tion for .its dispatch to the Read-Taylor Press in Baltimore. In a week's time the copy comes back in galley proofs. a white set to be corrected, and a pink set to be cut and pasted in the dummy-an old Review. After another interval the copy is once more sent to be proof-read in the advanced form of page proofs. The editor then heaves a mighty sigh of relief and mails the thoroughly memorized pages for the last time. They appear shortly afterward within a bright cover, the product of unthought-of processes extending over a period of thirty days. ' Having let you into the secrets of the publications' office, we hope that we have injected the quality of sympathetic understanding into the cooperation of those who subscribe to our Bulletin and Review. 22
