1 PEEP INTO THE FUTURE The blustering cold and heaping snow of Chicago had made everyone just a little late for my birthday party, but at last everyone had arrived, oh so cold but cheerful. And now I stood before the huge towering pink and white birthday cake to blow out the forty-two little candles, which merrily blinked at me. reminding me that all of twenty-five years had lapsed since I had had a birthday cake just like this except of course for the number of candles. I had been a senior in school then, at Central High in Elizabeth City. North Carolina As I leaned forward to tell my guests my birthday wish and to blow out the candles. I realized that each of those candles might well stand for each of the seniors in my class of that year of 52.
