With varied proiects for each grade, students were taught the basics of grammar, speech, and literature. While sophomores wrote their autobiographies and learned of the trials and tribulations of David Copper- field and Julius Caesar, the juniors worked hard pre- paring their Junior Ex. speeches. The seniors ended their final year at Central with term papers dealing with their future occupations. Joel Helke initiates a new member into Central's Latin Club, Junior Classical League, while other apprehensive students wait for their turn. important role in the broadening of our student's cultural background. In addition to the satisfaction derived from learning to communicate in a foreign language, the study of another language usually acquainted the student vvith the people who spoke the language. They came to know their art, history, and literature. Central offered a choice of four foreign languages: Latin, French, Spanish, and German.

Student Council Typing cmd Testing The Guidance Department at Central served many useful purposes this year. Help and advice were given to sophomores, iuniors, and seniors on what courses to take not only in Central, but in college. In addition to aiding students in choosing the correct college, infor- mation on scholarships was made available and tests were administered. In cooperation with the State Employ- ment Service, assistance was given in part-time iolo placement. College and occupational counseling was also provided. The counselors also helped students cope with personal and social problems. The secretaries handled the mechanics of the school. They enrolled new students and took care of the students who withdrew. Failure slips, report cards, and office correspondence were typed up and mailed. Transcripts of students' grades were also sent to colleges. As the contact between the teachers and students, the secre- taries typed announcements, athletic department reports, and the schedules and dates for sporting events. Guidance counselor Mr. Bell explains entrance requirements for Carle- ton College to senior Bill Melby, as Bill is considering entering Carleton. Guidance secretary Mrs. Nebel cheerfully hands junior Rolf Gundersen some information of the P.S.A.T. which he will soon take under the direction of the guidance counselors. Wg . Q f' 1 at MRS. Mr. Wheelock, both o U.S. History, ond on Americon Problems teocher, discusses the civic problems ond aspects of Oktoberfest, ofter o heated debote in the clossroom, with Morie Fischer.
