Gym, Speech, Civics, library service, guidance service, instruction, etc. Next fall a group of representative school men from the state will visit the school to compare their judgment with that of the fa- culty. The whole process will show the fields in which Central should make its greatest efforts in the future. ClV!CS SURVEYS-During the fall semester, the civics classes carried out several city sur- veys which proved to be successful and very informative. Two civics classes were divid- ed into historical, economic, social, and po- litical committees. The historical group, headed by Ardis Samp, gathered information about early, middle, and recent history of La Crosse, topography and climate, flora and fauna, the Indians, and biographical sketches of leaders. Arthur Schwalbe was chairman of the economic committee which included industrial organizations and output, transpor- tation and communication, professional classes labor and labor unions business and financial organizations employment bureaus and central housing. As the social group leader, Jean Rennebohm had work done on educational facilities, religious affiliations, leisure time, crime and crime prevention, housing, public health, safety, public and private welfare work, and civic and fraternal groups. Kenneth Schmit was head of the po- litical committee. Information came from the city charter, common council, mayor, adminis- trative departments, courts, taxation, zoning, annexation, and local federal agencies. Facts were gathered through interviews, documen- tary study, field trips, and city records. The other survev consisted of investigating unoc- cupied factory buildings for national defense purposes.
