Then just because Merman mentioned something about the base-ball team, Bill let about ten pounds of English literature drop on poor Rayniond's head, the effect of which was a deep, hollow, sound, so hollow that every one in the class knew what had happened. It was lucky that Bliss Houghton was now enjoying her habitual visit two rooms south, or something would surely have resulted. But you ought to have seen the look 'iliill received from Oakes. Howard was so shocked at William's disturbing the class in such a rude manner that if Bill had not been made of such stout stuff, that look would have ended him. In one corner, Jacobs, Minshall, Johnson, Ducke and Dickens are discussing a few light topics, such as,ftranscendentalism, the disintigi-ation of radio-active substances, or the analysis of tones by the manometric flame. ln the center of the room sits F orschler, industriously, as a person with a purpose in view, consuming the contents of Ben Ott's masterful work: 'Tussing for beginners Across the aisle is Lennie Harmacek, casting one of her shy glances at Ed Mckfahan, who is tenderly nursing a scratch he received while stroking his beard. On the other side of the room H. I'. Hansen is plaintively singing- tOh, you Beautiful Doll to Mabel Stanton. George Layman, M. Figgie and F. Klaye are earnestly talking, ---yes, politics with M. Rhode, M. Zeisler, and V. Warninger, respectively. F. Witcraft is deeply engaged in the contents of a Greek book, and does not witness the scene that takes place when lfenter sees something so in- teresting on A. Denny's desk that he is obliged to vacate his seat. Now Wagner rushes in followed by Miss Houghton as a close second, the gong sounds and the class lapses into a state of humble quietude.
