Foreword TO THE MEMBERS OF THE 1957 GRADUATING CLASS OF CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL AND THOSE WHO FOLLOW IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU, I ADDRESS THIS STATE- MENT: EACH GRADUATING CLASS LIKE EACH GENERATION COMES TO ACCEPT THE HERITAGE AND BENEFITS OF ITS TIME AS COMMON-PLACE WITHOUT RE- FLECTION ON THE STRUGGLES AND SACRIFICES OF THE PAST WHICH HAVE MADE POSSIBLE EACH GOLDEN AGE. AND WHEREAS WE ARE INDEBTED TO THE PAST, THE FUTURE PRESENTS A CHALLENGE TO US TO HOLD HIGH THE IDEALS OF THE PAST AND IMPROVE ON THE GOOD WHICH HAS COME DOWN TO US. I WONDER IF YOU HAVE THOUGHT HOW FORTUNATE YOU ARE TO BE LIVING IN THIS TIME WITH THE FAVOR OF YOUTH BEFORE YOU. THE DREAMS WHICH YOU CAN DREAM WITH THE EXPECTATION OF THEM BECOMING A REALITY, WOULD HAVE SEEMED FANTASTIC TWENTY YEARS AGO. I WISH TO CONGRATULATE YOU ON THIS IMPORTANT MILESTONE IN PREPAR- ING YOURSELF TO MEET THE CHALLENGES OF YOUR TIME. ALLOW ME TO COM- MEND YOU ALSO FOR THE SPLENDID JOB WHICH YOU HAVE DONE IN PREPARING THIS YEARBOOK AND RECORD OF OUR SCHOOL ACTIVITIES. I AM SURE THAT YOU WILL LOOK BACK ON IT WITH A GREAT DEAL OF SATISFACTION IN THE YEARS TO COME. AS ALWAYS, I WANT TO JOIN WITH YOU IN THANKING OUR MANY FRIENDS AND PATRONS WHO THROUGH THE YEARS HAVE AIDED US IN THE PRODUCTION OF OUR BOOK THROUGH THEIR ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORT. A. L. STANBACK, PRINCIPAL 2 Dedication For her devotion to the teaching profession; for her devoted guid- ance and leadership; for her earnest desire to cultivate the mind and beautify the character of hundreds of students; for her invaluable friendship--we, the class of 1957, dedicate this edition of the Blue Flame. To Mrs. Catherine C. Stanback K.v 3 Central, We Love Thee I Central we love thee, we'll honor thee daily We'll fight for our colors the old gold and blue, We'll never forsake thee although we do part, We’ll always adore thee you're part of our heart. Chorus: Central we love thee, Central we love thee, Our love for thee shall never, never, die, Central we love thee, Central we love thee Our love for thee shall never, never die. n In the days of hard trials, when storms over take thee, We'll act as a captain and bravely stand by, We'll protect and defend thee, our dear Alma Mater, 'Till dark days are over and bright days appear. 4 Administration Administration 6 Senior Advisors Miss FRANKYE T. How time has passed! Why it seems only yesterday that we were grad- uated from the eighth grade. When we entered C.H.S. the class was so large that it was necessary to divide us in- to A, B, and C sections, under the supervision of Mrs. Bryant, Miss Bizzell and Mr. Mc- Laughlin. By this time we were thinking of the popularity contest; in 9-A section the candidate elected was Alice Boyd, and in the 9-B section, Dorothy Nichols. Neither section won, but we gave a nice contribution to the popularity contest. The following year 89 anxious boys and girls came back to school as Sophomores. Our home room teachers, Miss Mack, Miss Bizzell and Mrs. Bryant were as pleased to greet us as Sophomores. We finally organized our class: We chose Walter Faribault as our President. The Vice-President that year was David Whitted. Doris Parker became our Secretary and Dorothy Nichols was elected her assistant. The Treasurer was Johnny Jeffries. The class reporters were Rosetta English and James Kirkland. Then came our Junior year; we were terribly excited because of the Junior Senior Prom. With the help of Miss Chavious and Mrs. Simpson, we organized. Officers were: President, Carolyn Burroughs; Vice President, Walter Fairbault; Secretary, Rosetta English; Assistant Secretary, Dorothy Nichols; Treasurer, Margaret Hughes; Assistant Treasurer, Johnny Jeffries; Parliamentarian James Kirkland. Our Prom was grand, decorated as an Evening in Paris scene. We are quite sure the Seniors of 56 enjoyed themselves. Now! Now! The happiest and most exciting school term comes, we are Honorable Seniors . Our Senior Advisors are Miss Robinson and Miss Dix. We came back to school on September 5, 1956, a group of happy boys and girls, excited over the many senior activities. Officers elected were: President, Carolyn Burroughs; Vice President, Walter Faribault; Secretary, Rosetta English; Assistant Secretary, Patricia Wells; Treasurer, David Whitted; Business Manager, David Whitted; Parliamentarian, Robert McAdoo; Sergeant-at-Arms, Frank White; Reporters, Cynthia Alston and Bettye Vanhooke. The outstanding ventures of our Senior year were the publishing of the Annual, the presentation of our Senior Class play, and the preparation for graduation. We will forever be grateful for the privilege of attending this school and for the guidance and encouragement of our parents, Principal and teachers. When we receive our diplomas, the history of our class as a group ends, and each member will write his own history by his future deeds. Rosetta English, Class Historian 30 What Would Happen If!
