In order to produce a year of accomplishments and entertainment the senior class must be led in their activities by capable officers. Handling these tasks were the senior officers elected by the 675 member senior class-Bill Hawkins, president; Den- nis Smith, vice-president; Patty Reddy, secretary; and Sue Willits, treasurer. The seniors donned their oldest clothes and discarded their shoes for the senior sock hop entitled Gypsy Jamboree held in December. In April, a cast made up entirely of seniors performed the senior class play, “I Remember Mama.” May brought Senior Career Day, and an opportunity for the seniors to catch a glimpse of their chosen field. Climaxing the senior activities for the 1957 graduates were the senior assembly, the picnic and the unforgetablc Senior- Junior Prom. The final days were spent in prepa- ration for Baccalaureate and Commencement, the grand finale to the wonderful days at DHS. 20 [)( !.URI.H ACOIIA Cary Adair Marilyn Ahlcrcn Carl Albers Marilyn Aliilrs Mary Jean Albertsen Clkald Allciiin Ronald Allchin Tiiclma Allen Mary Andersen Seniors Betty Anderson Donna Anthony John Archer Ceorce Ashton William Ashton Jerry Atkinson Diane Atwood Ronald Aust Ann Ayres 21 Wild a Bannister Katherine Barnes Ruth Barnes James Barstow Barbara Bali. Fro m Desk, to Press The Blackhawk office is the scene of constant activity as members of the Blackhawk newspaper staff hurry to meet deadlines and provide an interesting source of in- formation for DHS students. Published bi-weekly, the Blackhawk consists wholly of material written, drawn, organized and printed by the student staff supervised by H. H. Wubben, editorial advisor and Frank Tank, pub- lications advisor. The 1956-57 newspaper staff devoted longer hours and more concentrated efforts to publish an all-school paper. Enlarging the Blackhawk to five columns and changing to glossy-type paper as well as adding for the first time a student-drawn comic strip, were some notable changes employed to increase reading circulation. Favorable city-wide comment was received by the staff for its lively editorial policy which delved searchingly into many civic, educational and social prob- lems such as Davenport’s need for a new swimming pool, Mississippi Valley Conference sportsmanship and prej- udices between races. The newspaper staff obtained ample reward for their year’s work when the Blackhawk received an All-American rating. Amazed by the industrious group, debate coach, Mr. Fulton Ross watches from the sidelines. “a public speaker’s work is never done” is a true statement evidenced by the long hours of preparation necessary for suc- cess. Students arc trained to think re- flectively about national and international topics of concern as well as everyday problems. Their thoughts must then be clearly organized and presented in a con- vincing manner. Realizing experience is the best teacher, Mr. Fulton Ross, instruc- tor and coach, provides top-notch compe- tition for students interested in humorous, dramatic, oratorical declamation, inter- pretive reading, original oratory, televis- ion and radio speaking, student senate, discussion and debate. At least a portion of classtime is spent on each of these phases. In addition, lectures and study are concentrated on ancient pieces of rhe- toric, political speeches and vocabulary expansion. Co-captains of varsity debate. Bette Swain and Bill Hawkins marvel at the winning cup which marked the succe of the year first contest at Brindley. with Ease Complete interest is evident a Dave Hess and Cloria Lewis share their discovery. new argument for the junior varsity debate squad, with fellow members Kathy McCleave and Liga Viksne. 89 Stephanie Kent and Judy Erickson discover the import ance of backing their ideas with sulistantinl evidence Varied and extensive, the year’s activities provided opportunity for educational, extra-curricular activities. Early in No- vember many students ventured to Iowa City to witness an international debate between Oxford and State University of Iowa students. The state speech associa- tion and National Forensic League offer preliminary, district and state contests to serve as the final measure of a speak- er’s ability. Each contest includes com- petition in individual events, discussion, and debate. DHS students traveled to Brindley, Iowa City, Coe College, Au- gustana, Dubuque and Galesburg to take part in college invitationals. Win or loose, the goal of the public speaking department is to provide varied exper- ience for students who are interested in learning how to think intelligently and to express their thoughts clearly. Captur- ing the state championship climaxed the year’s public speaking activities and demonstrated the capabilities of the de- bate squad. Everyone got into the act when Doric Holtz tried to record a contest selection. Attempting to aid her are Roger Chamber . Paul Schroeder, Marilyn Angstrom, and Gloria Sundquist. Student Council 92 Several firsts mark the success of this year’s Student Council achievements. Rep- resenting the students’ ideas and plans, the council for the first time accepted full responsibility for the 1956 Homecoming. Realizing the value of a foreign student program, efforts were made to raise the money needed to bring a student to DHS next year. Avid interest in the problem of the lack of recreational facilities pro- vided the members with the incentive to participate in a meeting which represen- tatives of all high schools in Davenport attended. Discussing the pros and cons of a Student Council issue arc representa- tives Bill Sweaty, Judy McCracken and Dennie Ashy. Helpful participation in community pro- jects is the goal of the DHS Red Cross chapter. Each year the group accepts one major project to improve city wel- fare. After a visit to the Oral Deaf School, Red Cross officers discovered the need for a new type of educational hear- ing trainer. They purchased this device and it is currently in use to improve the quality of training. Nearly S 160.00 was • collected. in the drive for Red Cross ’ donations. Approximately 500 Christ- v mas stockings were distributed through- out the community to orphanages, homes for the aged and needy groups. The year’s activities ended in an Easter drive to send packages to foreign countries. G e r m an Club The German club is composed of students interested in furthering their knowledge of the German language in a way which proves to be scholastically as well as socially beneficial. “Friendly Persuasion” was the theme attached to the float which the German club entered in the 1956 Homecoming parade. Addresses by individuals who were witnesses to the European way of life highlighted the year’s programs. One speaker who had been in Germany just previous to the outbreak of the war vividly described her experiences. Toys donated by the group were delivered at Christ- mas time to children of the Annie Wittenmyer Home. The German club cooperated in the drive to bring a foreign student to DHS by donating to the fund. Leading the club were Mike Otto, president; Sally Fluhrer, vice-president; Don Hazen, treasurer; and Joanne Spencer, secretary. German club officers Joanne Spen- cer. Don Hazen. The ultimate goal of the lli-Y or- ganization is to instruct its mem- bers in the advantages of enlarging their comunity interests and bene- fits as American inhabitants. Activities began with a dinner meeting held at the home of ad- visor Mr. Harold Marston. Prominent local individuals, for- eign representatives and religious leaders related valuable informa- tion to the senior group during the year’s programs. The seniors sold Christmas tree tickets to raise money and donated a portion of it to the foreign student fund. Hi-Y advisor Dick Carey led the group and took part in their num- erous social activities such as swims and movies. Serving as the senior leaders were president. The Hi-Y juniors, working in conjunction with the seniors, sent representatives to the “Youth in Gov- ernment” convention in Des Moines and sold tickets to Christmas tree purchasers. Independent activities included a Christmas party, swimming parties and entertaining as well as edu- cational movies. Programs frequently consisted of addresses by local and foreign speakers. Junior members participated actively in the observance of World Fellowship Week and the Holy Week services. Since a definite sophomore chapter was not estab- lished this year, the few sophomores combined their activities with the junior chapter. Guiding the junior Hi-Y chapter were president, Jerry Krieter; vice-president, Dave Fry; secretary, Dave Fairweather; treasurer, Dennis Dietz; and chaplain, Barry Richards. Imps Remain Undefeated The 1956 edition of the DHS footbail squad provided its followers with a second straight undefeated season. Coach A. J. “Butch” Stolfa guided the Blue Devils through a nine game schedule which was tarnished only by a last game tie with Cedar Rapids Roosevelt. The Imps continued their gridiron supremacy by monopolizing the championships in this area — the City, Quad-City, and Mississippi Valley Conferences. Halfback Ted Zeiner and center Jack I eabo were rewarded by being placed on the first eleven on all-state teams. Backs Bill Carter, Don Wyatt, and Jim Wilhelm along with lines- men John Copley, Jerry Frei, Dennis Smith and Tom Choate were all-state honorable men- tion nominees. All-Quad-City and All-Metro- politan honors went to Leabo, Zeiner, Smith, and Frei while Copley, Wyatt, Carter, Wil- helm, and junior Dick St. Clair were placed on the second team. Backing up these honor winners were senior lettermen Bob Curnan, Wilber Frahm, Nick Boosalis, John Brock- man, Dave Buhl, Clyde Carter, Jack Holthaus, Rodney Hustacc, Dick Jaeke, Bill Meyer, Chuck Slack, and Bob Theer. Leaders in individual statistics this year in- cluded Zeiner with nine hundred yards rush- ing, Wyatt with fifty-one points, and Carter, who collected fifty-four clean tackles during the year. Wilhelm and Carter were named honorary co-captains at the end of the year by their teammates. The Imps opened the season by grinding under a weak St. Ambrose team 56-0. With the city championship under their belts they played host to a surprisingly strong Cedar Rapids Wilson outfit, but emerged victorious 21-0. The Davenport gridders then traveled to Iowa City and finally broke the jinx of the Little Hawk field by winning 20-7 for their second consecutive Mississippi Valley Conference win. DUS then moved into Quad-City compe- tition and subdued Rock Island 13-0 on two explosive runs late in the game. Dubuque was the next victim of the mighty ground at- tack of Coach Stolfa’s crew, tumbling 39-0 on the Brady Street Field. East Moline’s hopes were crushed in the next game as the Red and Blue posted a 20-7 triumph. The Imps then took over first place in the MVC with a decisive 28-6 victory over Clinton. The spirited Blue Devils then trampled Moline 34-7 to add a bright note to DUS Homecom- ing festivities. The next weekend they closed the season with a 13-13 tie with an upset minded Roosevelt of Cedar Rapids team. The game was played in below freezing weather conditions at Cedar Rapids. The Demons finished behind East and West Waterloo, two Northern Iowa powerhouses, both of which the Blue Devils had previously defeated in dual meet competition. Weakened before the tournament by the loss of co-captain Harold Duflield, the Imps were led into the final matches by the other two co-captains Bob Elliott and Mike Bewley along with ninety-five pounder Banks Swan, all of whom took second places. Duffield was put out of action by a rib injury after going undefeated in Iowa competition during the year. With only eleven lettermen returning the Blue Devil matmen opened the season by copping their own Invitational tournament by a wide margin over the second place Clinton Kiver Kings. After two lopsided victories over Moline and McKinley, the Demons played host to the East Waterloo Tro- jans. The strong Waterloo team, which later went on to win the state championship, fell before Coach Fox’s Blue Devils, 21-18. The following weekend the DUS grapplers invaded Waterloo and triumphed over West High, 23-16. This marked the first time in history that any team had defeated both Waterloo schools in one season. Davenport then entered the Quadrangular meet at Rock Island and came home with first place honors over Rock Island, Sterling, and Moline. Jim Beck puls on the pressure just before pinning his Cedar Rapids Franklin opponent. Davenport won the match 37-8. Cedar Rapid Franklin provided ihc opposi- tion for the Blue Devil grappler on January 25. 145 pounder Jim Beck seems to l e hav- ing little trouble with his opponent in this match. A close victory over defending Illinois State Champs Rock Island, 23-17, and a one-sided win over Cedar Rapids Wilson followed on successive weekends. Clinton and East Moline were the next two teams to fall victim to the Red and Blue. The Blue Devils then swept through four straight Mis- sissippi Valley Conference meets to wrap up the title. Iowa City was blanked 51-0, Franklin fell 37-8, Duhuque succumbed 37-10, and Roosevelt dropped a 28-7 decision to the Foxmen. Qualifying nine of eleven men in the district tour- nament in Bettendorf, Davenport traveled to Cedar Falls for the state meet. Competing in Class A in the first divided wrestling tournament in Iowa’s history, the Imps sent seven men into the semi- finals and three into the finals. Besides Elliott, Bewley, and Swan who took second place honors, Tom Choate and Tom Ramirez captured third places. John Payton and Jim Beck took fourth place spots. Leading the DHS scoring during the year was Swan with 91 points. Elliott and Bewley had 85 apiece followed by Choate with 76 and Jerry Sturms with 71. Coach Paul Moon’s netsters through May 6 had compiled their most successful record in years, 6 wins and 2 losses. The Imps scored lopsided victories over Moline, Clinton, Dubuque, Mus- catine and St. Ambrose. Brody, playing number one position, was undefeated in singles through that time. On the feminine side, Mrs. Ruth Neuberger, directing the girls tennis team for the first year, guided them to a third place finish in the Quad-Cities. Under the direction of Burt Scid ler and Jim Fox, the talent in boys’ intramurals this year concentrated in the second period gym classes. The three major titles, football, basketball, and volleyball, were all captured by boys from this class. Captain Chuck Hulse started out the season by guiding his foot- ball team to the school champion- ship. In basketball, a team composed mostly of hard-fighting juniors emerged with the laurels. The team was composed of captain Mike Keim, Frank Low, Dave Erbst, Skip Campbell, Clyde Car- ter, Bill Barker, Bill Fernandez, Brian Beerman and Jim Iverson. The volleyball title was copped by a senior team made up of Captain John Copley, Hulse, Bob Curnan, Jerry Frei, Carter, John Kruse and Bill Meyer. High- lighting the basketball season was the annual free throw contest. Approximately twenty girls competed for the first place laurels. Bowling captured the interest of nearly 150 girls and heated competition resulted in the race for first place. Pat McFarland succeeded in capturing the in- dividual high scores and the winning team, composed of Betty Felder, Bert Carsten- sen, Mary Hamilton and Jean Finck, ac- cumulated a sufficient point total to place them out in front of the remaining teams. In addition to these athletic activities, the girls were also offered programs in shuffle- board, deck tennis, badminton, aerial darts, tennis, track, tether ball and golf.
